FIRST Indiana Jones Film (Raiders of the Lost Ark) *First Time Watching* 

That first scene with all the tarantulas is the reason Doc Ock fights Spider-Man.

The music, the cinematography, the editing, the stunts, the colorful characters, the atmosphere, the touches of eerie horror sprinkled throughout... they all culminate in one of the finest action adventure films ever produced.

Fun fact: The guy who played Gimli in Lord of the Rings played Indy's arab sidekick in this film. Also: the Ark was said to contain the two tablets that the Ten Commandments were written on, the Manna that fell from heaven for the Hebrews in the desert, and the Staff of Aaron (Moses' brother and the first Jewish High Priest). No one was allowed to even touch the Ark or else they would die.

There was a deleted scene with the Arab Priest when they were reading the staff of Rah headpiece, warning about the dangers of looking at the divine upon disturbing the Ark. Regarding the Stunts, Spielberg asked the Stuntmen, "Are there any stunts you've always dreamed of doing but never found the right film for?" Taking this opportunity, the stunt team compiled a list of their "dream stunts," which Spielberg and his team then wove into one almighty scene for the Truck Chase.

George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and John Williams. The holy trinity. And let's add Harrison Ford to the mix also, for good measure.

Its the obvious comment to sneer and say bah, Tomb Raider was just 'heavily inspired' by Indiana Jones. However IJ was itself a massive homage to older black and white film serials, especially King Solomons Mines. Lucas was big on that, and Flash Gordon as a kid. So he turned the latter into Star Wars and the former into Indiana Jones.

Fun fact: The scene where Indy shot the swordsman wasn't actually scripted. It was put in day of filming. Harrison Ford had food poisoning and was really sick. He asked the director if he could just shoot the guy, thinking it would be what Indy would do anyway.

I love how the poison darts don't freak you out; the deadly spears, the humongous boulder - none of that freaks you out...but the moment he runs through🕷spiderwebs 🕸-- you cringe and squeak. 😂😂😂

Indiana jones is 10 years older than Marion. Back then he and Marion got together in 1926 even though he was 27 and she was 17. Abner, Marion’s Father, was Indiana mentor and when he found out, he strained his relationship with him. Over the next 10 years she realized what she did was wrong and here Indiana jones brushes it off

One of the best films of the early 1980s. Steven Spielberg is a master storyteller and director. In 1982, Raiders , Reds both lost to Chariots of Fire for best picture

The legendary John Williams just earned his 54th Oscar nomination for the 5th and final installment of the franchise (INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY (2023)) literally a couple of weeks ago, making him the oldest ever nominee in any category. Today (Feb 8) also happens to be his 92nd birthday. What a way to celebrate his birthday!

Fun fact, Alyska, the first Indiana Jones film is responsible for getting more people in the real world interested in the field of Archaeology than any other movie. Another fun fact, I've seen many real archaeologists react to these movies, and their reviews of it are always pure gold to watch. One thing they nearly always universally say about these films is that, if booby traps like we see in the films actually existed, archaeologists would be more interested in studying the TRAPS than they would be in studying the treasures!

I'm glad you didn't edit out the spider scene. Your reaction to the ice spider episode in the Mandalorian is a classic.

In a deleted scene the old man the read the markings on the medalion told Indiana Jones not to look if the ark was opened, that was how he knew to keep his eyes shut and told Marion to keep hers shut

There was supposed to be a fight between Indy and the swordsman, there’s actually a bit of footage filmed for it i think, but Harrison Ford felt horrible from food poisoning. So he suggested he just shoot the guy

Harrison Ford did a great many of his own stunts. In fact, at 81 years of age, he is the oldest actor to still do stunts in his action career.

you can't imagine how much this impacted us 12-year-old boys watching it in theatre when it first came out. My god. The storyline - powerful relics in strange lands, puzzles from ancient times to solve in furtherance of a quest, one good guy fighting a cabal of evil henchmen, the everyman vs the state, all that was nirvana enough for a kid, but those weren't the only things. Raiders of the Lost Ark was the first modern incarnation of this type of storyline. And everything was new, the fight scenes were kinetic and had a sense of place. The music - mindbending. It was just cut different from every other film of the time, and to top it off, the audience really got into it. There were actual cheers from the audience at the end and people would see it over and over again. For me personally, it inspired a love of both history and archaeology, with me learning all that I could possibly learn about the 1930s and 1940s - especially World War II and the efforts of the Allies vs the Axis. It's sad that we don't have the same mystery nowadays - this movie inspired countless others and as a result, they have lost lots of their awe. And yes the mummy is 'highly inspired' by this, but it doesn't hit the same for me. I like the historicity of this more and the fact that there were such groups as Nazis and that they did almost destroy modern civilization just makes things hit harder - even watching this film 40 years later.

No cringe parts. It's just your point of viewing life.

We were at a movie theater and the previews were on and people started cheering and applauding. We were surprised we had never heard of this for a trailer. No one had seen the movie yet. The movie was Raiders of the Lost Ark.

33:14 Fun Fact: This statue fell a little earlier than it was supposed to, but after watching the dailies, Spielberg said he was still satisfied with the way it fell and how Harrison Ford didn't look quite ready...it appeared more realistic.

It's implied Indy and Marion had an inappropriate relationship while she was still underage and "in love", or at least infatuated, with him. And Lucas's original treatment/concept had them at like 15 and 25. I think they nudged it to 16 for her or something, but still really young, and the implications based on their ages in 1936 and that they last saw each other 10 years before, are that she was young regardless.

Nice reaction Alyska, so glad you watched this popular gem. The sequel, The Temple Of Doom and its third The Last Crusade should be reacted to. This is one of Harrison's best films. Reminds me so much of Tomb Raider is getting artifacts, not for personal gain, but for a museum to be cherished. Your next film reaction should be Arachnophobia (1990) LOL.

Indy knows to keep the eyes closed mostly because it is part of the Ark lore from the Bible, but it is never established in the movie beyond a deleted scene, so those non-Bible savvy of us get confused 😅

I think you'll love Temple of Doom the most for the horror aspect, how it literally created the pg-13 rating, and that Short Round may just become one of your favorite characters ever. :D

This film was meant as an homage to the old 1930's matinee serials they used to show in theaters before the main attraction. As good as this film truly is, it's still meant as a tribute to that old version of Hollywood that is long gone. Even when this came out, it was long gone.

What part of "it was wrong, I was a child" "you knew what you were doing" needs further explanation? Not many conclusions you can make from that.

Just a observation that doesn’t get mention often. When this first came out it was retro…meant to be a callback to old films.

When that man and Jones was in that stand-off and the guy starts swinging his sword around showing his skills and Indy shoots him, that was ad libbed. It was in the script that the two got into a sword fight. But HF said "Indiana Jones wouldn't fight him, he'd just shoot him". So he did it that way and it's an iconic scene.

There is an hour long tv special that came out shortly after the movie that is a behind the scenes/making of feature. It shows how they filmed the stunts along with the practical special effects, it’s about an hour long and on RU-vid.

I don’t know if you’ve seen Lord of the Rings yet, but if you have, you should recognize that the dwarf in Lord of the Rings (Gimli) is played by the same actor (John Rhys-Davies) who plays the local who is helping Indiana as the character Sallah.

Fun fact: Spielberg, Lucas and Kasdan (Larry Kasdan the writer for Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back) got together and wrote the entire screenplay and flow of the film in three days. You can find their notation and brainstorm sessions online. Simply genius.

Raiders Of The Lost Ark was inspired from a 1954 movie Secret Of The Incas, with Charlton Heston. Indiana Jones' outfit looks VERY similar to what Charlton Heston was wearing, and a lot of ideas were lifted out of Secret Of The Incas that went into Raiders Of The Lost Ark. At the beginning of Raiders, in that jungle temple, there was a large gold disk in the background. That was the disk that was being sought in Secret Of The Incas. When they were lifting that stone slab at the top of the temple in Raiders, there was some kind of dark smoky substance coming out. That was most likely 3,000 year old bacteria and viruses, which was what killed most of the team opening King Tut's tomb. They rushed in and breathed the bacteria.

During the scene when Indiana is sitting at the bar lamenting over Marion, there's a random guy walking about in the background wearing jeans and a blue t shirt. He wasn't an extra, just some guy out and about on his daily business.

The 2nd movie, Temple of Doom, is loved by some, not by others, but everyone agrees that the 3rd film, The Last Crusade, is a classic. The most fun of all the Indy films.

I grew up with star wars, Indiana Jones, back to the future etc.... We where the lucky generation!

Fun fact: All the TV antennas have to be removed from the houses in the scenes in Cairo because they didn't have those back in the 30's.

I haven't seen the movie in many years, but I remember at some point someone saying that you couldn't look directly at the power emanating from the ark and that's why Indy knows he has to close his eyes.

Ya know Indiana Jones was the one who came first and the inspiration for both Tomb Raider and Uncharted.

The sand in the Ark represents what's left of what they were exoecting to find - the tablets on which the Ten Commandments were inscribed. The Ark was used to dispense God's wrath.

The bearded man who's friend with Jones as they sit talking is played by John Rhys Davis. He also starred in the Lord of the Rings trilogy playing as Gimli a dwarf. There were some dwarf actors and blue screen so he could appear in person.

This may have been mentioned already, but just in case it wasn't, the scene when Indiana Jones threatens to blow up the Ark of the Covenant with an RPG was filmed in the same canyon that was seen in "Star Wars: A New Hope" where R2-D2 is ambushed by jawas on the desert planet of Tatooine.
