In Vietnam, which returned to French colonial rule, 700 to 800 Japanese soldiers remained and weapons such as aircraft and tanks remained, and the Kwangai Army Junior High School was established in 1946 during the Vietnam Independence War. Military education was conducted by former Japanese Army officers and non-commissioned officers at several military schools. Some of the former Japanese soldiers who died in the Vietnam Independence War have been honored at the Martyr's Cemetery. Some Japanese soldiers who returned to Japan were later awarded a medal by Vietnam. In addition, we will continue the friendly relations between the two countries by establishing organizations such as the Japan-Vietnam Trade Association and the Japan-Vietnam Friendship Association.

Those Japanese soldiers had families in Vietnam and sired Vietnamese-Japanese children. However, as the US became involved in the region, Japanese government ordered them all to withdrew and abandoned their families in Vietnam. The wives and the children weren’t even allowed to say goodbye. In his visit to Vietnam, Emperor Akihito met with the families and expressed his condolences for the hardships they had went through. A trip was then organised for the representatives of the families to visit their fatherland and if possible, pay respect to their father’s graves. Some even had the opportunity to meet with their Japanese half-siblings and received memento from their father.

There were thousands of Japanese soldiers in the South who surrendered to the Allies and were later used by them to fight the Vietminh too. Do you know that?

I once read that some Japanese soldiers were sympathized with Vietnamese so some of them who had missions to keep order for British and French deliberately ignored resistance action by Vietminh.
@deskywallington2844
@deskywallington2844 4 года назад
"Sympathized with" is rather a great underestimation of what good deeds the Japanese have greatly done for the Viet Minh. The Japanese weren't only sympathized with the Viet Minh, but they were also the one who laid the foundation for the organization, the core tactic, and the modernization of the Viet Minh and Vietnamese army as a whole. Driven by past guilt, hatred for the Allies, fear of condemnation or even a purpose for life, as many as thousand of Japanese soldiers ( Including some from the notorious Kempeitai ) decided to join the ranks of the Viet Minh, Ho Chi Minh would later granted Vietnamese citizenships with made up native names for these wandering soldiers and certified them as the "New Vietnamese", which made them completely immune to Allied intervention. All the camouflages, the booby traps, the small and elaborated trench digging and the guerilla tactics, the Viet Minh were able to perfected with the Japanese experiences and guidance. Japanese officers were appointed to strategists, military teachers and even generals. Old Japanese warfare textbooks were translated from Japanese to French by various Japanese officers for the benefits of the Viet Minh. Without the Japanese support and collaboration, i don't think the Viet Minh and later on the NVA wouldn't have been able to achieved what they had achieved in our timeline.

@@deskywallington2844 Some Viet Minh units were commanded by Germans or Austrians. The most famous was Ernst Frey who commended a V.M. Regiment. Some others directed the propaganda, they published a paper called "Waffen Brueder" (Brother in Arms) aimed at recruiting French Foreign Legion Germans. Some French also joined the V.M., many former French resistants, who fought the Germans during the French Occupation. After WWII, Europe was completely destroyed, for many, going to Asia was an opportunity: a roof, food, a work, some money. There is a youtube doc in German :Deutsche Legionäre im Indochinakrieg Doku Deutsch über Legionäre im Indochinakrieg" where German veterans who fought with/against the French retell their memories. Some specialized units pretended to be French units and attacked French remote forts from inside. At the difference of the US, French send colonial soldiers to fight in Vietnam: only officers and NCO were French natives. Most of the French infantry was African (West and East Africa), Algerian, Moroccan (the Tabors), and Tunisian.

@Tuphut Let me share w/you: I was a kid during the Vietnam War, missing the draft by one year. A few years ago I picked an old Time-Life picture book about SE Asia in which a picture of Ho appears. In the b&w picture, Ho is dressed in a black jacket. His left hand cups a cigarrette; he is looking to his left: The picture is cropped at the waist. Ho's hair and beard are wispy white, his eyes alert, world-weary, intelligent. cont....

Vietnamese lost about 2 million lives in their war and known as a glorious struggle for independent in history, and Cambodian the neighboring lost about the same amount of lives during The Khmer Rough or Pot Pol regime known as the Killing Field, the Cambodian killed its Cambodian, and considered such as a shameless losses, while only a little know that The Khmer Rough had spent ages with the Vietnamese Communist to fight with Republic government backed by the US in Cambodia. Cambodian or Khmer historically known as one of the foolish and innocent nation in Southeast Asia, and for the Vietnamese is well-known in their tactic of spy and undermining even the US couldn't beat them with this, that's why I had always thought about the involvement of The Vietnamese in the Killing of Two million Cambodia in just 4 years of Khmer Rough occupation.
