My PlayHouse is a channel where i will show, what i am working on. I have this house, it is 168 Square Meters / 1808.3ft² and it is full, of half-finished projects.
I love working with heating, insulation, Servers, computers, Datacenter, green power, alternative energy, solar, wind and more. It all costs, but I'm trying to get the most out of my money, and my time.

Love your setup Morten. I would put a roof above your solar charge controller,just a piece of plywood in case of direct rainfall shorting your battery. You may consider an inline fuse between the battery and solar charge controller too. It would be a shame to fry that wonderful FREE battery.

Looks promising, please make sure to properly align the antenna to the cell tower. Make sure you update your modems firmware as well as the systems FW + RouterBoard FW to the latest stable (7.x), also a recommendation is to use WinBox instead of the webfig interface for a more advanced configuration. Additionally you might be able to improve your speeds manually selecting bands for the modem, as well as boosting the voltage like others said. One other aspect might be your SIM card itself may be limited to a certain bandwidth by the provider! Lastly you might be better off using the 'ATL LTE18 kit' rather than the older (and slower) 'LHG LTE6 kit' for the most performance. As always, great video! :)

Have you checked that the 4G tower you see at the top of your hill belongs to the right 4G operator, the same as your SIM? Another solution would have been a "passive radio relay" at the top of your hill, with 2 high-gain antennas back to back, connected together, one pointing the 4G tower, the other pointing your house. And another high gain 4G antenna at your house, pointing at your "passive relay". For such short distances, it should work.

Hi Morten! Having messed with that type of connexion too, to provide internet in public events, juste a heads up : you can only use one band for upload. In France, you can generally choose between three or four bands (mobile operators are a bit messy here), and the performances can wildly change between each, even in good conditions. For download, routers can aggregate bands, but if one band is weaker the whole thing is slowed down. The only way is to test each combinaisons, and choose the best. The good news is that it's stable over time, even in rainy days. I don't know if the Mikrotik router can be configured that precisely, but it's possible on cheap hardware, so i suppose it's the case. (and sorry if you already know all that!)

MikroTik will work within a variety of voltages. The downside to undervolting the system is that the electronics are not working optimally. You should try to boost the voltage to 24/48 volts (PoE voltages) and see if there is a speed difference. I would also recommend, at minimum, drilling a drain hole at the bottom of the makeshift battery box. Water will only collect in that bin.

You should use a 4G+ capable modem, as that connects to two channels on the Cell at the same time, often more than doubling the bandwidth from a single channel connection using standard 4G. I have used 4G+ here in the UK for years, and it took a 16mbit connection to 45mbit's on the same connection to a cellsite 27 miles away from my house. We have 1gig Fibre now, so I don't worry about it anymore, but still use 4G+ as a backup via pfsense for the WAN.

Morten, this project needs alot of improvement. You should have used a iron pole because wood will be gone in 2-3 yrs and should have put it into some concrete. It needs to be real solid solution because there will be storm conditions up there and if that thing starts to move so does your 4G signal. It's like aiming a satellite dish, it's comes very narrow if that makes any sense. Also your solution does not seem very weather proof much. Do you think that plastic WIFI thingie will resist the full power of the sun at 50-60 degrees Celsius? I would advice using fiber or plain CAT 6(A) cable up there, just use a switch in the middle (can be PoE powered) or use some extender, there is plenty of solutions, it think it will be more stable than wifi. But first make sure you can even get the speeds you think you going to get. If this does not work have you considered Starlink in Portugal, it's like 65 euro a month...
@MyPlayHouse
@MyPlayHouse Год назад
There is room for improvement,,, but a normal fencing pole will easily do 5 years (most of the year is bone dry) and I did get a treated pole. I have the option to do concrete,, later or something else,, but lets see if this works at all. The dish is full of holes, so it does not catch the wind to hard, but the solar panel will. I hope the light colored plastic of both the 4G and the Wifi bridge will prevent the boxes from becoming to hot (they are made for sitting outside, just like this) I have looked at starlink,, but $65 a month is quite expensive for 10-ish days of internet every sec. month :-/ If some of this turners out to be bad,, we will improve it later :-) there is nothing we can not change.
@SolarLantern424
@SolarLantern424 Год назад
To try and get better speeds you could try making slight adjustments to the dish part maybe? Could it be tilted up to point higher up at the tower as the antenna isn't the tower don't forget, it's like what you built, a framework to put the antenna on. You won't be able to see that actual antenna from that distance. With a dish micro movements can make a big difference sometimes too, so you might want to try just tiny almost imperceptable movements of only a degree or bigger ones. Don't forget the point of a dish is it is highly focussed so there will be a point at which you are pointing at the point or something like that. I've forgotten what the point was now but it was something like that. Also higher might be better as the dish will be able to collect more signal. You might even be low enough that the brush gets in the way a bit or even the ground. The ground does stuff too I think. These are my suggestions. 😺📡🗼💻🪛😊 Anyway I don't really know as I have not tried to do what you are doing but I think you should try things. There is lots of options to explore,, also changing provider might give me a lot more.

As said by others, you should respect the voltage and amperage of your antenna. It can improve speed.

Manual says 12-57volt. I am pretty sure that if the voltages is to low,, it will not work at all.

@@MyPlayHouse true. What I want to say. If you are too close to the minimum voltage your router will work on minimum power (eco mode), have tplink 4g router in eco mode provide only 50Mb/s. If it's full power I get 150Mb/s). If you provide more voltage maybe your antenna will get better coverage. I would say, you need to check if you have enough Amps. Coming from the battery and specially from solar panels

Just need to say you won't get 100+mb upload speed out of a cell tower on 4G

Well,, this was quite an improvement,, to what I had. Maybe i was to fast to call it slow.

I suggest putting your Mikrotik CPE into bridge mode, however, you should separate Internet from management traffic by using VLANs. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IZFAeLbujso.html

Morten arent you afraid of any "hunter" in the wild to come to your mountain an steal the equipment? Or shoot the dish for practice? Its quite far from your house as far as I can understand.
@MyPlayHouse

Yes,, I am afraid of that,, but I will see if this is a real problem before I go shopping for personal mines.

The modem is your speed limiting factor being a CAT6 modem, try a Sierra Wireless EM7565 CAT12 modem, or for best results get a CAT16 modem from TELIT or Foxconn. Dell also makes a CAT16 modem that is reasonable $ and it is DW5821e, the last three modems are 4x4 MIMO and them will get you real close to the 100's of MB/S you are looking for. Your provider will be the one that dictates what class of modem and what threw put you will be able to use and get. The dish you are using will limit you to 2x2 MIMO because it only has 2 antennas and with 4X4 mimo you will need a 4X4 antenna or #2 2X2 MIMO antennas.

Might be the ISP that are limiting the speed.. I will play with this some more..

You need a real firewall now.. if your setup burns in hell having a firewall you avoid to burn the whole hill.
