I feel like there’s this pressure in the queer community for every piece of media to be absolutely perfect but honestly to have good representation is to have a lot of it, trashy shows about queer people, cheesy rom coms about queer people, high art fancy movies about queer people, they’re all equally important to have representation

I feel like the target demographic is young adult wlws who grew up with all the shows like this but with straight protagonists. Personally I'm an 18 year old lesbian and loved this show in the same "it's trash but it's my trash" way and I DO need 18 seasons

As someone who always has subtitles on for netflix shows, thats something that always happens not just for this show. Whole sentences being rearranged, words missing, swearing censored or missing all together too. Just frustrating for people who rely on subtitles to convey a show. And dont get me started on [speaking *blank*] whenever a character switches languages.

It's so cheesy, and I LOVE IT. Little worried they've written themselves into a weird corner, because sometimes it feels like they don't have their lore figured out, and they're just making shit up as they go. The thing that bothered me about the zombie scene is, like, why not leave the dead zombie there, so that people know the monster is dead, and that the girls just got incredibly lucky in killing a monster? I guess because people might know it's Ashley? And then they would be questions about who turned her into a zombie, and that might leave questions about witches? Why is Ben surprised there are witches, when he knows vampires exist? And why is he surprised vampires exist, when the universe knows monsters exist??? Why does Eleanore have powers that seemingly no other vampire has??? I also felt mildly uncomfortable with the sex scenes, because they do both actually look incredibly young like teenagers, even though they aren't. Lol That all being said, I loved the show, I binged it in two days, and I never want it to end.

I adored this show, my bf however was not a fan, so I’m guessing this is for the wlw’s that grew up reading fanfic lol. Also Talia absolutely stole the entire show, I was laughing along until the last episode when her performance about potentially losing Theo made me cry ugly tears

I think the Emerald Malkia is still inside Juliette’s father because when that other vampire family was demanding to see it and know that it was safe, Juliette’s grandmother kept refusing as if it wouldn’t be an easy task.

Was it cringy and campy? Yes. And I enjoyed it so much! Also every scene with the sister was a pleasure to watch, if there is a season two I hope she comes back cause she was my absolute fave

This show deserves AT LEAST as many seasons as we had to suffer through The Vampire Diaries. And probably as many spinoffs, too.

This was such a nice "turn your brain off and enjoy" show. The fact that it's straight out of the kind of fanfics I read was a great plus

Honestly this sums up exactly how I feel about this show. Is it perfect? No. The dialogue is very weird at times, the cgi isn't great, the story is very cliche. Do I still love it? Absolutley. You can see the passion and love that went into this show. It's like watching a fanfic and the story is cute and it's a fun easy watch. I absolutley love this show despite all ita flaws because you can feel the love that went into it. Not to mention that as someone who was raised very religious, I love the way they use biblical imagery and metaphors.

This show is definitely my new guilty pleasure. I liked that Ben and Juliette are platonic GBFs for each other.

I'm a huge fan of trashy teen dramas, especially in the supernatural/paranormal so I ate this show up. I think the bad cgi is part of the shows charm, like season 1 of teen wolf or the vampire diaries. The writing could be tighter and there was some struggles with the acting but I think this show has a lot of potential so I hope we get another season. Also everyone is complaining that it's bad representation for the queer community but we have so many cheesy supernatural teen dramas with straight couples so why can't we have one with a lesbian couple? the sapphics deserve it!

literally my only isue is the writing/pacing. i liked the characters, I liked the world building, I liked the story, every element was there, but the pacing was way off. we needed a clear season long arc, I truly did not understand anything about oliver like you said, we don,t know anything about him for sure, like am I supposed to like him or is he a villain like ? i wrote a way too long comment about how id fix it in another video so I'm not gonna do that again but yeah, if they'd just moved a few things around and developed a few elements, it would've been more coherent. but I still liked it and want more cuz I wanna see them improve

I'm mad about the Theo ending because there was a much cooler plot here. I honestly thought when we saw him turning that he did get bit when he was a kid and his severing also didn't work, so dying after being bit turned him. Then you could make this whole season two plot about a legacy vampire biting hunter kids so they turn when they die. It makes so much more sense than Juliet turning him... By draining him... Which is what she and Elinore do all the time, so genuinely, how did she turn him?

I love the show it has potential, but my made question is if they can “accidentally” turn someone into a vampire, how come none of Elinor victims came back all like “Surprise Bi*ch?”

It felt very “season 1 of Carmilla” with the acting and other cheesy aspects (I adore Carmilla though) Some of the lore didn’t make sense to me, especially the guild. If their family has been apart of the guild for a long time, why didn’t the mom immediately go “that sounds like a legacy vampire trait” when Juliet was staked and didn’t die. No one was suspicious of the guild enough for my liking

I think we have to stop calling everything bad/cringy that isn´t a deep masterpiece of writing. Yeah, it´s a cheesy teen show, but that doesn´t make it bad. I genuinely just enjoyed the ride this show put me on.

I need them to fix the lore! How vampires are turn? Because just draining humans from blood is not enough. Some of them are dead and some of them are turning? Also why the guild is a secret if monsters are not? And Theo. He was trained to be a hunter his whole life and now he's a vampire and HAS to live with other monsters. I don't think the transition should be easy

Yes, the dialogue is Cringy at times, and the plot is a bit on the nose (Naming one of your Star Crossed Lovers Juliette, REALLY?!) But I love how unlike Buffy, it subverts the "Bury your Gays" trope, and has an compelling vampire WLW story.

This headline sums up my thoughts exactly. When I finished watching I was like "feels and vibes: so good, can't wait for season two, what an unexpected ending." But when I started trying to explain it or think/analyze it all I came up with was "....yeah actually it is not good but I still want MORE"

Smth that really bothered me is how much they glossed over that whole "I can make you a real girl, there's a spell for that" thing. Because if that doesn't come up in season 2, if there's a season 2, or if there's no justification for why it wouldn't work on made-vampires, then any "my brother is a vampire now :(" angst is really going to annoy me lmao

My favorite part was everyone assuming Calliope was the vampire because - come on, 'Calliope'? That's clearly an ancient immortal trying badly to blend in!

It got better as it progressed. Watched it with my gf and we hate watched the first episode, it was too cringe, but after a while we laughed when we were supposed to and cried. It was good!! I even got compelled to draw fanart for it, which i did not expect. Very surprised

The show as a whole is loveable trash. But the acting performance by Talia's actress? Like, honestly...so amazing. And Elinore as a character? Loved her, unabashedly.

Once again, a show that has CW written all over it & makes me really bored until the last 2.5 episodes. BUT....BUT...it's also the first gay series I've seen that doesn't hold back on makeout scenes, so that's refreshing.

The moms were the best actors on the show, and yes they had AMAZING chemistry 👀 👀

It's so sad Netflix cancelled the show, I was curious if Juliette and Calliope would go back together, of Calliope would forgive Juliette or not, in the second season, or if Oliver knows who is the vampire who killed Theseus's mother. I have so many questions 😭

I think the reason the hunters are kept a secret is to not cause panic amongst the people because as soon as the regular folk found out that one monster was back, they went completely off the rails everyone was scared and panicked so they hunt in secret so that doesn't happen.

as a former twilight/tvd/teen wolf etc enjoyer it's my current obsession... a supernatural teen drama but Gay was just made for me, but i do agree with most of your critiques (writing & someone needs to make sure the bgm is not louder than the lines being delivered lol its distracting). i think the show suffers from the 8 ep a season model, they needed more time/space to build the main r/s & expand on the supernatural lore (probably the one time i would say the 22 ep/season cw model would work better) but i admire what they did with what they got (budget wise) and i'm hoping they do get a s2 to work on the issues & improve!!!

I love the premise, characters, and cast. The writing and directing generally leave a lot to be desired. HOWEVER..."You ate my mother" is the best line in the history of television.🤣

I liked that it is ambiguous on whether Oliver is good or bad because I think it made the ending with the backyard full of monsters more shocking. Maybe they'll try and do a redemption thing where he realizes it was bad to summon all the monsters, but now it's too late or something.

the babysitter guy that you call a dick is actually one of my favorite character actors lol he is in so many of my favorite movies and tv shows, it's funny to see him pop up in this one.

I think the Elenor/Oliver thing is really a case of "She made me out to be a monster to everyone, and I became a monster because of that." Like it wasn't necessarily that he was a bad guy, but he says something along the lines of "She made me do things that made me a monster," so theres that? Like maybe the rumors got so bad for him that he was like "you know what? Maybe I'll become that monster that they're so convinced that I am." Of course I haven't actually watched the show, jsut this video, so I might not have all the context.

That's a good point of the Burns' secret identities. For the first few episodes I thought that most people didn't know about monsters existing. Only when the school went into lockdown did I realise that they were just known about in the universe. Also Calliope's room being fully decorated when they're staying a few months in Savannah irked me. This whole thing is a mess (that like you, I love) but that was a really silly detail that I couldn't ignore for some reason. I found Theo boring for most of the show but he's so much more interesting as a vamp. The scene where he almost attacks Apollo I remember thinking how the actor was doing such a good job and was clearly having a lot of fun. If they get a second season then I hope they get a bigger budget. I don't usually care about special effects but the CGI was just so bad it took me out more than once. The final scene of the season being the worst example. All impact of Oliver's reveal is lost because the monsters looked like they were from a PS2 game.

The only reason I can think of to keep the guild a secret is to protect the hunters. If everyone knew they were professional hunters monsters would attack them.

Ya know I love a good vampire who enjoys being a vampire but we almost never really see a vampire who is just sort of neutral on the matter. Or indifferent. Ya know their more like “there are pros and cons so I’m just vibing”

my random thought with this show was that they chose *those* houses for the families out of all the amazing architectural and historical houses available in savannah 🤮 edit: now that I think about it more they really squandered the secret tunnel possibilities given how many tunnels Savannah has; like old house with secret tunnels could be a way to feed more easily around the city!!! Or a house with guild history like cmonnn guys easy peasy world building 😭

I love this show even if it's not good quality because the story even if messy, is entertaining and keeps you hooked and the lesbianism makes it even better so I need 10 more seasons of this NOW

I really like the honesty they brought - If its cringe, its cringe supreme but sometimes it's really great. They are touching on deep stuff but never preaching from ivory towers or taking on waaay too much for a cheesy teen drama like Riverdale and many others tried to do. this show was such a strange experience because you have dumb shit like grandma getting eaten whole but then you also have talia doing anything and everything for her son, which had me sobbing

I really couldn't watch this show for more than a couple of episodes but I recognize that it's good that it exists. We need more good lesbian representation, we need more lesbian representation in different genres, we need more lesbian representation in general. So, for those reasons I'm glad this show is out there and that other wlw are finding it and enjoying it, that warms my heart :) :)

I love the show. I have room for shows that are just FUN. And this was FUN!!!!! I don't care about CGI at all. I loved the characters, the main relationship, the families and the chemistry between the two leads. If anything I just wanted more episodes. I like that they didn't turn their relationship into this over the top, I'll die without you thing, they've known each for what 2-3 weeks? They have cover identities because they're only supposed to be there for a few months and disappear. This way no one can track them.

The introduction to the school monster alarm and subsequent plot point that monsters are known to the world at the mid-point(!) of the series was a Shapeland is Animal Kingdom-level twist.

There are a lot of confusing things about this show, so many things I feel like they could've somehow explained but chose not to just to keep up this "mysterious" atmosphere lol. It's lacking consistency in the writing. I have SO many questions, especially about the abilities vampires have! Juliette can hear Cal's heartbeat but Juliette's parents couldn't hear Cal sneaking in through a window? Juliette can just automatically fight without ever doing it before in her life? But she can't open a locked door with her strength? And how was Theo able to see his own reflection in the mirror? In episode 3 or something, Elinor mentions how "made vampires" would love to be able to see their own reflection just like legacy vampires can do? Did Elinor use her mind compulsion powers on Oliver when they were kids or what (the Oliver/Elinor plotline is so confusing for me) BUT .. there is nothing I want more than for this show to have more seasons! I am obsessed with this cheesy, confusing show! I will be heartbroken if we don't at the very least get a second season! I also really love the natural chemistry between Imani and Sarah Catherine and it's very obvious that this show is so dear to everyone in the cast. I'm already looking forward to everyone's bts photos and videos on instagram for season 2 lmao

Honestly, it’s a really good setup where one is an awkward girl trying and failing to talk to her crush and the other is a highly trained monster hunter who is taught to be really observant of those around her.

Hearing Amanda bring up the old Nick show, The Troop, made my young child heart leapt out because I haven’t heard anyone talk about the troop in ages. That was the most grown up so I Saul a neck that had like sci-fi elements and lake monster/alien vibes and it was kind of like it was a niche show. But it was my niche show. I remember when it was like commercial time it always had like these vlogy type/ mission messages to HQ videos talking about school life/ the monsters they hunt that they trap and it kind of made the show feel like it lasts outside of the show credits and feel like it was ongoing all the time. The only thing I remember was the brainy student (Felix) and the leader/teacher (Mr. Stockley) of the troop show. The teacher is the dad from Smart Guy and the guy with the glasses is David Del Rio, he was in Pitch Perfect and is in an upcoming Hulu show called Maggie.

When i watched the trailer got "Sapphic MTV's Teen Wolf mixed with True Blood with a CW casting allowance" THAT SAID. When i finished the last episode i told my husband "I would probably watch season 2 but there is no way its gonna be renewed because its not great."

Honestly I think Cal turning on Juliet felt really out of place for me like technically Juliet saved Theo's life. And Cal playing the "You turned my brother into an evil bloodsucking creature" card feels so strange because she's realized Juliet is a vampire and she's not evil. Then Cal was trying to convince everyone else that monsters aren't evil. But the minute it's her own brother that's unacceptable?

The biggest mistake while watching this show is watching it siriusly. If you start watching it as parody it gets so much better.

I watched it on launch day expecting really good plot lines but definitely was not mad at how bad it is. Representation is extremely important and the fact of the matter is is that we can't expect all queer content to be good and not cheesy. Even with it's horrible start and completely dropped plot points, the first season left me wanting more. Whether that be because of the LGBT nature of the show, or because it actually got good at the end, I'm not sure. What I do know is that I want more. I need more of this show lmao.

I wasn't into it, but I finished it so that says something. I wasn't that interested in the sapphic relationship even though that's what I was most excited about it going in. My favourite parts had to do with the vampire family when they were dealing with vampire issues.

This show is phenomenal and I will hear no argument against it. It's just campy, ridiculous fun and the lgbt community deserves that.

Amanda, for the emerald M part: it seems like humans are a flexible species so turn into a hybrid of any greater species. So human + vamp blood = hybrid, weaker vampire. Hybrid, weaker vampire + EM bite = weaker, hybrid vamp-emerald.

Re: hunters, monsters, and secrecy- I imagine hunters are like undercover FBI agents in the sense that everyone knows the FBI exists, but undercover agents don’t advertise that who they are so they can do their job more effectively. And vampires are kind of like Breaking Bad-style drug producers/dealers. Again, their theoretical existence is known, but they keep quiet so they can keep doing what they do (i.e. vampiring)
