I ended up 7th overall at the Iowan hard enduro after getting 5th in the hot lap, 8th in moto 1 and 6th in moto 2. The hot lap and first moto were pretty easy due to the dry conditions and there wasn’t much to slow anyone down. I lucked into a good start in moto 1 (starting in rows of 5 was so much better than a mass start!) and even had the lead for a few seconds until some course ribbon that I’m pretty sure wasn’t supposed to be there blocked the trail and I just stopped and felt lost while those behind found a way around. But it didn’t matter much since they were going to pass me soon anyway. It was nice to follow them for a short time and see what pace they were running though. That didn’t last long, they pulled away quickly as I settled into a pace I could manage without risking it on the faster sections or pumping up too far beyond recovery.
The final moto was better being longer and having a few hard spots thrown in. I was surprised at how well my bike just lugged right up some of the steep hills. Pretty happy with the finish since the track did not suit my style all that well overall but I always want to ride better. I need to find some speed and better fitness if I want any chance at seeing any of the top 5 for more than the first few corners. Those guys race the whole time while I go into recovery/survival mode far too much.
But for now it’s back to riding just the trials bike for a while to be as ready as I can be for nationals starting next month. It’s been a blast to get the opportunity to race some hard enduros thanks to the FactoryONE Sherco team and all the sponsors that make it possible:
