Join me as I listen for the first time to Serpent Eating The Horizon from Bravely Default, and review it quickly from the perspective of a Music Producer.
This is a highlight from a Live Twitch stream, so it's not as technical as my regular videogame analyses I make on my main channel!

This track is a banger, but it hits so much harder after playing the game since it incorporates so many other tracks from throughout the game. Listening to it you’re just like, “heh, there’s the world map theme, that’s pretty cool. Wait, that’s a different boss theme now. HOLY SHIT THOSE ARE THE CHARACTER THEMES”

“Who wrote this song?” Someone who spent his entire career writing rock opera. Not even memeing there, REVO is the creator/composer of the band Sound Horizon, best known for obscure storytelling rock opera concerts. He composed Bravely Default’s soundtrack (and also Attack on Titan’s famous opening, Guren no Yumiya) under his side band Linked Horizon. Hardly anyone I’ve seen mentions his main career in Sound Horizon though, and as someone who used to be crazy about Sound Horizon’s stories and 10-minute long tracks, Alex, I’M BEGGING YOU TO CHECK OUT MORE OF REVO’S WORK

I'm thinking Hikari to Yami no Märchen (the first track from Ido e Itaru Mori e Itaru Ido) could be a good introduction to the absolute BEAST that is Sound Horizon. Honestly, Revo's work is so cool and lots of things he mentions in this video are basically his musical signature and easily recognizable once you've listened to enough of his music.

@JackgarPrime 3 года назад
I'm one of the few people who actually really enjoyed the loops, but I TOTALLY get why people didn't, yet I feel bad for everyone who dropped off because of it, because they missed out on one of the greatest finales in video game history.
@dawk7
@dawk7 3 года назад
@@JackgarPrime Honestly, it's frustrating that the loops don't have a more solid handholding to all of it. Like, hear me out on this one: When the first loop comes around, you are guided by the "Oy vey, the fuck?" of the world being reset. You also get a truckload of little side-battles with the bosses as an extra "Okay, something's wrong with the world" kind of deal. The first loop is shocking, arguably annoying to have literally the whole world reused but it's still cool. The tendency would be to push through this one ASAP because... well, it's a curious situation, and one you'll want to resolve quickly. You can see even the boss battle scenarios are very short and straightforward, harder repeats rather than anything new. The second loop is the "okay, there's something wrong" moment. Ringabell also starts getting his flashbacks that pretty much scream of a traitor in your midst, and the more clever player can easily see what must be done, because as we all know Airy Lies. It's arguably likely that the first ending will happen here. But the third loop is there for those that haven't noticed yet. Here's where the problem lays, however. Because in the 2-4 loops the sidebosses are interesting, you can see how there's still some noticeable effort put into the game, it's not like the devs have been doing nothing here... but the main story cutscenes are straight up the same. And that is the big issue, because the game is pretty much shouting at you "DO THE THING" which is sensible, but there are technically three results out of this. A) The player Does The Thing. Good Ending happens, player is relatively satisfied, maybe even too much so they stop playing not even aware that there's a True Ending! B) The player keeps playing, and goes on to chapter 4. The difficulty increase slams into their face even harder than in chapter 3, so they either drop the game or Do The Thing because the game is pretty much rubbing it on their faces by this point. C) The player *pushes on* and skips straight to the True Ending. The issue here is that you have three scenarios, and only in one of them _some_ people will walk out of things satisfied. Like, good god I appreciate the effort put into the scenario but they really screwed the pooch designing it.

The moment that Ouroboros ripped open a hole in realities and the hole showed me staring back, and I realized my 3DS camera came on I almost shat a brick. What a finale, so worth the initial slog.
@Skyblade12
@Skyblade12 3 года назад
@@dawk7 The second loop is the big problem, IMO. It's basically a more fleshed out version of the first loop. The first loop shouldn't be there. The second loop is just a better version of the first. The third is completely different, as is the fourth. But the first one doesn't have enough of your characters wondering what is going on to really play into it.
@dawk7
@dawk7 3 года назад
@@Skyblade12 I can see the idea that the first loop was meant to embody, but they really shouldn't have placed any of the Asterisk rematches in it. The looping aspect itself wasn't the issue, it was the implementation... and right from the start it trips, yeah. I think it would've been easier to make the first loop just a rush to the crystals, have the characters be laser-focused and not notice the whole dimensional travel aspect yet. Which they _kinda_ did, sure, but the issue is that they didn't bother making the player feel that way by slamming you in the face with a truckload of sidequest bubbles all over the place.

So for context, this song is broken up into sections as you go through the different phases of the fight - just after everything seems hopeless, you enter the final triumphant phase. You hear, in succession, sections of every character's special move theme (Tiz - You Are My Hope / Agens - Windward / Edea - Baby Bird / Ringabel - Love's Vagrant) which normally plays when you use a powerful attack that grants status buffs to your party. (And they're played with the same instruments as their normal themes, which makes this one of the only final boss themes to use an accordion. Thanks Ringabel.) Also, the distinct main instruments of each theme are also heard in the game's main theme, (Prelude Moving Towards Hope), which plays when you get a new Job Aesterisk, or in other words, when you defeat a boss. You hear a callback to the Asterisk Boss Fight (That Person's Name Is...), which is a challenge you've overcome many times before. This motif is also used in the world map theme (Horizon of Light and Shadow), bringing the adventure nicely full circle. And finally, a small section of the victory theme is played. This entire section of the final boss theme is telling you that victory is at hand.
@JackgarPrime
@JackgarPrime 3 года назад
Combine it with the events going on during the final boss, which run through the whole gamut of emotions you can possibly have during a fight, and it really was worth everything it took to get to that grand finale.
@GalanOfTruth
@GalanOfTruth 3 года назад
There has never been a better final boss theme sequence ever written, I stand by that and your explanation of this is exactly why. Daughter of the Dark God from Octopath is insane but themes like that as good as they are still remain static throughout the fight and don't tell a story, they simply set a mood. Serpent Eating the Ground sets a mood while telling a story as the fight goes on and to simply hear it without playing the game doesn't do it justice even though its still incredible.
@MelvaCross

The whole game was worth just to witness this track in action. Just throwing every leitmotif the game has to offer into this magnum opus of a battle theme. And it works so well with the pacing of the battle, too.

Revo, the composer of this music has a 20+ years music career, he just went kinda unnoticed for a while, he first saw success with his main project, Sound Horizon, a fantasy band, his album Elysion was his first major release under King Records if I'm not mistaken, it's been 16 years since then, but he started putting his music out there in the late 90's. Then he started his secondary project Linked Horizon, but since that project got casted for SnK/AoT, Bravely Default (etc) to do the music and main theme, it became 20 times more successful than Sound Horizon. Also, yes, Linked Horizon's sound and format is a little bit more functional for the general public while Sound Horizon is harder to get into (although I started following SH first, i can tell why it is difficult for new fans to become Laurants -fandom name-). I think you should definitely check out some of Revo's work in Sound Horizon, you'll notice where some of the sounds you heated in this song come from. Revo usually references his SH works in LH and other projects (Damn, Revo is so good he even worked with Momoiro Clover Z for the OP of Sailor Moon Crystal, Moon Pride). Long comment, but yeah, definitely check out Sound Horizon and other projects Revo has worked on.

Also if you wonder why you didn't play it.... well, it doesn't get too much attention by SE before. I got to touch this game through song title playwords. (XC 'You will know our name' to BD 'His name is...' to Awakening 'Don't speak her name') it is Niche in a different way to other since it isn't too Anime that it could be called 'weeb' but it is like the spiritual successor to FF3 with the system stuff. What amazes me the most about the song is that its the whole story of the fight in the song itself. It starts with an angelic choir as a god decends into the fight. It changes to a more intense and intimidating tone, as you fight the god. Then after the main part repeats itself, as though the struggle goes on for a time, it changes to the fast part, as though the heros of light are trying to end the fight there. It even plays the part of the song from the end of the song, the same set of decending notes signifying an end. It then moves to a gentle dispair part, as their attack failed and they failed. The last hope is falling. Then it turns to a desperation track, the song moving quick and harsh. It moves into each of the character motifs, a triumphant recovery for the team as the step up to fight. We get a rendition of the main game motif played quick, the whole world is is on their side. We get one last round of the gods music, before closing out on the real ending, same notes as before but actually concluding both the song and the fight

Epic Orchestral music with challenging sick af guitar segments. After listening to your interview with Jules, this totally feels like a song you could colab on. Its even basically a FF game. :D Lovin these blind reactions man, keep em comin!

I'm so happy you finally reacted to it. BD is my favourite game of all time and it deserves more attention. I'd be great if you reacted to more music from the series but I'm content either way. "Wicked Flight", the "Ba'al" battle theme and "Battle of Providence" are great battle themes as well if you're interested! (The second one especially if you ask me. Forgot the exact name of the song but you'll find it if you search for the ba'al theme)

One of the best final boss themes I've ever heard. The song itself pops, but then you add in the fact that it adds in SO MANY leitmotiff's from the game together, and makes it WORK. Honestly listen to the full ost, you will not be disappointed (and for it's sister game if you haven't, Octopath Traveller is very similarly orchestrated)

Late to the party here, but I just want to add, that as epic as this song is, it’s only the second half of the final boss theme, the full theme includes this and wicked flight before it, yes, the final boss theme is over 15 minutes long when you take that into consideration, that said, while both parts are amazing, this half is undoubtedly the more epic half

The best part of it is the last phase's theme (starting a bit before the woodwind), you have to hear the other tracks to understand the meaning in it. But as others have said, this entire out is a remarkable work in Revo's repertoire.

The piano is Motoi Sakuraba, who's done so many amazing video game soundtracks (Dark Souls, Tales games, Golden Sun). You should check his compositions out, the Golden Sun soundtrack for example is so great considering the technology available for the GBA. One of the electric guitars is also Marty Friedman. The talent involved in this soundtrack is incredible.

The soundtrack of Bravely default is good for a 3DS game and the final boss song it a cumulation of the whole game where at the end there the 4 theme of the character whit their instrument and it end whit the victory fanfare.

Bravely Default had the most fuckin' legit OST. Serpent Eating the Horizon doesn't even bother with a bunch of build up, it's like, "okay here's the final boss KICK IT IN GEAR MY GUY." And then it hits a medley of the protagonists' themes and the main menu theme.
