The problem is most of the songs on this album are just good and not amazing. It’s missing those stand out moments on American Idiot or even the highs of 21st Century Breakdown. I agree in terms of consistency this is their best album in years. But it’s also consistently just “ok”. I wish it had more stand out moments or songs that had multiple movements like American Idiot (people forget how Prog that LP was with many songs shifting to different musical sections). Saviors in comparison is much more stripped down and simple. And that is fine because there isn’t any bad songs on this track list. But it also doesn’t wow.
Green Day is my favorite band, but I’m not in love with the album. It certainly isn’t bad and there are some good moments, but after listening through a couple of times, a lot of the songs (especially on the 2nd half) sound quite forgettable to me. But I‘m neither mad nor disappointed. These guys have been making music for more than 30 years and their sound evolved with them. Me not being fully in love with their sound of today is on me. And I still appreciate that they‘re out there making new music.
I wanna preface this by saying that i am a massive Green Day fan and i absolutely love this album. These guys shouldn't be attacked in the comments because they just had an opinion on an album that you didn't agree with, if you disagree with their takes, let them know in what ways you disagree in a respectful manner. At the end of the day this is just their opinion and they are entitled to theirs as much as you are entitled to your own.
Thanks for watching brother! I've been a Green Day fan for over 20 years - I've got GD posters all over my apartment (you can see one in the background of this video lol), every album on CD and vinyl, etc. etc. etc. I don't like the album as much as others but I don't hate it either. I was expecting something more exciting I guess. Saviors still has its moments for sure though, I think Strange Days Are Here to Stay is especially great. -Dylan
I think Dylan can’t be considered a real Green Day fan because it’s clear from the other videos on this channel, he listens to other bands. Real Green Day fans only listen to Green Day. Additionally, he wears baseball hats that have other logos than Green Day. He is not a real fan. Also, his user name is both related to Teenage Bottlerocket and Screeching Weasel…NOT Green Day. Stop pretending to be a Green Day fan.
Most definitely. I don't think they have had a home run since 21st Century Breakdown. Revolution Radio was the closest they have come but it just felt way too familiar to American Idiot and Breakdown without improving on it. Green Day's catalog had such a great evolution from 1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours thru 21st Century Breakdown with each album building on the last but they have been stuck in such a weird rut now for way too long. Every album post Breakdown has just sounded like Green Day on autopilot
@@Nova-fh2et Bang Bang is such banger off RevRad and I actually do like Still Breathing a lot, definitely not on the level of 21st Century or American Idiot tho, I agree. I feel like Green Day is just doing this bare bones garage rock stuff now, it's not awful but it's just very forgettable. I do like the production of Saviors tho, just wish it had bit more of a dynamic punch.
@@ergoth154 Revolution Radio definitely had its moments and Bang Bang was a highlight for sure. It just felt like another pass at St. Jimmy with the content of Having a Blast though. Good for sure, but way too familiar
Suzie Chapstick reminds me of something the beatles would write - I think it's well done and more sophisticated than what Green Day usually does. Their ability to write good ballads is what distinguishes them from all the other punk (or however you want to call it) bands. That's the reason why GD is not a typical punk band that stays on the same level of publicity for years and this approach to explore different sounds is what wins them grammies. I like both new blink and green day records but the latter has a lot more substance and much better vocal production. And did you pay attention to Coma City drumming? Tre is doing an amazing job here.
Saviors is definitely a solid album….not one bad song. My only issue is that, I am not sure what I like more Revolution Radio or saviors. Both are great albums.
Huge Green Day fan here! Every song they hated I loved 😂 I can understand why homie don’t like corvette summer. Green Day coulda made that a generational anthem but they literally had a great melody and sound and said “that’lil do it” instead of giving it more substance or telling a more intricate story. It certainly does the job if you’re a casual fan or if you like a great and catchy melody (which personally I do like).
Ok coming back and re-listening like 7 more times i have concluded that you have it listen to the album more than once to get the true experience songs will grow on you like strange days are here to stay the first listen through for me it’s pretty good nothing to write home about 7.5 out of 10 but I was in the shower and I got a song stuck in my head that I couldn’t figure out but it sounded so good and I actually thought that I was hearings nimrod song like it was just a small part of it in so basically I think y’all were s little harsh on it I’m gonna have a hot take this is better than 21st cb easily
Ok im 14 and I don’t think im lying to myself I have listened to every album expect tre and god forbid that album is garbage I can’t stand or get through it and here’s my take this is better than 21st century break down fs now me personally old Green Day is better than new I like warning more than ai and I wood swear up and down dookie is the best album of all time now this is gonna be the biggest hot take you have ever heard but this is very close on my scale to American idiot and that’s just out of respect for what the album done now maybe I’m a little harsh on ai yeah maybe I have listened 2 times and it’s a drag on it’s hard to get through with the 8 minute songs like we didn’t need that but anyways yeah I’m not lying to myself
Honestly there weren't any songs in the first half I thought "nah" on, Look Ma kind of "?" but okay, 1981 probably lost some attraction for the repetitive chorus and Goodnight Adeline started being more enjoyable on re-listens with an acceptance of the more ballad-y style. Started going downhill after that, Strange Days pulls it back up and Living In The 20s was really good in a "I'm angry and need to get that across!!!" way, then the last three all a bit poor again (Saviors was a bit better, maybe mid). Had I been advising on the length, I probably would've said cut 9, 10, 13 and 15.
Just finished first run through. First full album I’ve heard since Warning. I’ve listened to probably the majority of American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown, but I don’t think I’ve been through all of either, and nothing from 21st Century is top of mind. I like 11 songs out of the 15. Look Ma No Brains, Corvette Summer, Father To A Son, and Fancy Sauce were the rejects. Now to see if it stands up to repeated listens.
It is a bit worse than Revolution Radio and little better than The Trilogy. Which honestly is what I expected from them at this point in their career. Still, had some tracks I loved (even some you didn't care about). A few bad/meh ones too. Mostly mid tho. Favorites: Dilemma, 1981, Coma City, Father to a Son, Strange Days, Living in the 20's (basically Horseshoes and Handgrenates tho)
Also can’t please everyone I think this album is great I mean just wondering can you guys write and make a album with all good songs you not realize how hard it is to do that
@@doozledumbler5393 they do write good songs this record had 5 singles so far that’s really good and damn retire Billie joe is one of the greatest song writers not everyone is going to like every song but in the end of the day they had 5 singles
Love Green Day. I would argue this album is OVER produced. Green Day have always been an amazing live act, raw, perfectly In sync 4 in the floor rock. They don’t require the sugar coated production. I don’t hate this album, but I’m a bit bored by it.
It’s a great power pop record but I wanted hear Green Day do a chunkier punk record but Billie’s probably moved past that point in his life and his angst and anger is gone
Greenday also being my favorite band This album is a breath of fresh air from them for sure. I’d say I love about 40% like about 20% and the rest is mid to okay. Overall though I see some of your points on some songs but really see this within Greendays top 3-4 albums and most the songs are going to seem better with time I have a feeling if they don’t get into trouble with all the references and “samples” they used making it. What I don’t understand is how Mr firecracker gave it a 6 yet based off what he liked he should be at like an 8/10. I’d personally give it a 7-8/10 not there best but far from their worst. Not everything made has to be serious so the chants being forced doesn’t bother me and if you want serious greenday just ain’t the band for you
Sorry kinda disagree with you guys, I though most of the songs were bangers, definitely enjoyable 1981, dilemma, strange days, corvette summer, living in the 20s and one that surprised me was fancy sauce, the lyrics alone I loved, reminded me of a slow version of suicidal tendencies institutionalized
I've been listening to Green Day since I was 12; they've always been my favorite band. However, if 'Mother of All' was bad, this one is just boring. It's not punk rock at all, just rock. Billie's voice feels distant, the sound is repetitive and unoriginal, lacking any imaginative variation. I'm permanently disappointed, maybe because I discovered Bad Religion and NOFX 10 years ago, and my tastes have changed. Although I quite liked Revolution Radio.
Those first 2 tracks were singles and I agreed with John on the first one and Dylan on the second. Basically I didn't like either of them for exactly the critical reasons they both gave. "Dream is Killing Me" is just like "Hey let's do something we've done a million times before" and "No Brains" is so incredibly stupid lyrically. They're trying to stay relevant, some ppl will buy it, I'm just not. They're definitely still relevant for live performances, but I don't expect to enjoy any new music from them.
LOVE the new album. 8.9/10. It's a focused, more wiser Green Day. Dilemma and Bobby Sox are the stand outs - I honestly think Dilemma now stands out in their top 10 songs ever. The only thing that keeps the album from being a 10 for me is that it has a few skips (Goodnight Adeline and Suzie Chapstick, but even those I don't actually mind listening to.) I do think they were telling the truth when they said that the album really is a look back at their entire career - you can hear the styles of all the albums (except 39/Smooth, but I ain't complaining)
the new Green Day record is in many ways an antithesis to the new Blink 182 record: - Saviors has amazing production, One More Time has horrible production - Saviors is mature & classy, OMT is immature & corny at times - Saviors is very consistent in sound & theme, OMT is like a mixtape of all Blink 182 styles one might therefore argue that Saviors is objectively the better album but me personally, i think i like One more time better. i feel like OMT has more personality, fun & memorability. most of Saviors sounds very safe, reserved and formulaic. i gravitate more towards songs like Dance with Me, Fell in Love that are corny & fun than most of the decent but boring midtempo oldies songwriter songs of Saviors.
I agree, even if OMT was kind of messy and overproduced, songs like Dance With Me, Terrified and Fell in Love all still make my rotation, definitely felt like a return to form after so many years. Where Saviors is just more of the same Garage Rock we've been hearing from GD for over a decade
Yes! i was more critical of OMT when it came out but then grown to really like it. Maybe i will warm up more to this album over time too. Its definitely solid.
I really enjoyed this album, Bobby Sox was probably my least favorite it got a little repetitive imo, not at all a bad song but definitely not amazing. I loved this album though thinking about buying a vinyl
“I don’t know, I think it’s fine, I don’t know” what the f is this shitty review??? You guys got nothing else to say critically than those two sentences?
I wish Blake Mclain would review. There are so many things to notice in production and mix... and I'm kinda disappointed no one is pointing those out. Seems like they are casual listeners with not much knowledge about music production and other technical stuff. 🤷♀
This is a first time reaction, you're not gonna talk about the complexities of production and minor details on a first listen, you're just gonna talk about your immediate thoughts and feelings on the record.
The whole backhalf of the album was a snooze fest. Every song dragged on like a minute too long. Songs like Corvette Summer were just sooo corny, "drop a bomb on my rock n roll! Here we go now!" Just awful
The only Green Day record that is worst than this is Father of all... (I don't think they can put something worst than that horrible album). Saviors had is moments, Dilema, Look Ma, 1981, Strange Days... but thats all. A lot of boring songs and the cringiest lyrics. And I differ with you guys on Coma City, loved that song, the best from Saviors.
Man - you guys need your sense of fun back. Understood this is on first listens but you need to have another listen with a beer or two and in a good mood.
Haha John! Corvette Summer a 7? Worst song on the record followed by Suzie Chapstick. The rest are pretty good IMO. I actually kinda like Bobby Sox, the choice of Scream-adjacent singing during the hook really worked for me. Look MA, No Brains and 1981 are the two best songs. I'll give the album a 7. Some of the songs I was initially meh on eventually grew on me. There's a lot of good hooks throughout and I love the vocals. I would have liked a fast song or two, but I'll take this as a strong improvement over the majority post-American Idiot.
Seeing that you’re going to rank and score the songs- I hate when people do that. I don’t think you can be fully open to music when you’re judging it like that.
@@ergoth154 ok I was meat riding Green Day but it’s a good song imo I’ve listened to the album 4 times and I rate the album a 7 it’s still a good album imo
Just what I needed, a Green Day review from the love child of Kevin Owens/Matt Jackson and a negative man-baby who only wants GD songs that sound one way. You can go eat your tacos now.
