My Father owned several of her albums, when I was 14, in the 1970’s her music was played in our house mostly in the evening. ❤❤ Makes me weepy. My Dad adored Joan’s music. Thank you, Daniel. Great reaction.
Daniel, thanks so much for giving Joan Armatrading a chance. This song gives just a hint at her wide vocal range, she's also an excellent guitarist. My approach for artists new to me is to listen to a compilation and if I like it to dive deeper into their catalog. Joan has a lot of compilations, I happened to pick the A&M "Greatest Hits" which has 19 songs, all of which are worth hearing. 'Drop the Pilot' is a more upbeat and catchy pop song, her 2nd most popular I think. Others: Cool Blue Stole My Heart, The Weakness in Me, Rosie, Down to Zero, Willow, Me Myself I, (I Love It When You) Call Me Names, All the Way from America.
"I am not in love, but I'm open to persuasion." One of the best opening lines EVER! Fantastic artist and glorious singer/songwriter/guitarist that relatively few people know about. Next song by Joan Armatrading you should listen to is Down to Zero. Totally unique structure and astounding voice!
Joan was more well known in Europe than in the US. I had the good fortune to see her live 3 times and she did not disappoint. The band was always tight and her voice was smooth and stellar. I agree that she is a highly under rated artist in the US. If you're interested in hearing more, I'd suggest The Weakness in Me, Show Some Emotion and Drop the Pilot. Happy listening.
Much appreciate that you listened to Joan, her first album is classic. In the States she is a deep cut unfortunately, but music lovers know her. She was unique on FM radio in the mid-70's, I bought her album then and still listen to it.
@@davidospina5216 I am a London girl born, bred and worked there until I transplanted here and went coastal . Here on East Coast of England for last 22 years. You?
I love this song. My mind often goes to this song when someone thanks me for something. I also love 'Show Some Emotion.' I saw her live in 83 and she was very good...a very intimate concert.
I remember going to see her play live here in London back in the '70's and she absolutely blew me away that night. She always had this kind of self consciousness about her, and her music reflected that very often. God bless her, she's still criminally underrated and unappreciated but she's one of the finest we've ever produced
Thank you for checking out Joan. She is one of a small handful of guitarist/singer/songwriters who under the beautiful production guidance of Glyn Johns found her voice. She is a wonder.
I saw her many times at Red Rocks in the 70s and 80s (she sold it out every time). I noticed some one recommend The Weakness in Me. A very good next step. Her discography is a treasure trove.
She has so many different sounds: Show Some Emotion (Jazzy), The Weakness in Me (singer song writer ballad), Simon (reggae), Me Myself I (rock), All the Way From America (cinematic). Feel free to add to this list.
Joan is an amazing talent, and a long, rich career. Definitely check out Drop the Pilot, Show Some Emotion, Heaven (raw and powerful)... she's got so many great songs. So glad you gave Joan a chance. Her career spans at least five decades.
Daniel, I'm a 56 year old straight man, but there's just something really beautiful about seeing you hear this for the first time. It's a total delight - and I hope you find the person that makes you feel like this song feels.
Ah - the wonderful Joan Armatrading! I saw her live at the 1978 Blackbushe Airport Rock Festival in the UK. What an occasion THAT was. It was about a 2 mile walking distance from my house at the time. Also featuring were the likes of Bob Dylan (it has been reported that Dylan considered that his performance at that gig was the best that he’s ever done). His 10 piece backing band was just astonishing with Eric Clapton in the band. It was one of those WOW moments in the history of rock festivals and I’m so lucky that I made the decision to attend. Attendance figures were reported to be about 250,000 fans. It was HUGE, but sadly very much a one-off occasion. I was never really a fan of Dylan before that, but I certainly was afterwards! Joan Armatrading has performed ever since and she’s always been around with her name cropping up now and again. What a career!!
Finally, Joan A. She had quite an arc of a career from the mid 70s - late 80s. "Show Some Emotion," both the song and the album, are fabulous. Her best, imo.
I was a heavy metal fan in highschool and I credit a Joan Armatrading tape of my mom's that was stuck in the tape player on a road trip for broadening my mind and tastes. Been a fan ever since.
Beautiful!!! Thanks for this! She is Unique! I happened to be in Santa Fe in 2003 for a workshop and found out she was playing there and was able to see her wonderful performance in a patchouli scented ornate theatre. What Luck! She was Amazing!!!
Definitely Willow (very much like Love and Affection) and Show Some Emotion (strong jazz/rock influence) ; Rosie is a song that surprisingly wasn't written by her but when you hear her singing it you would swear it was written for her (maybe it was??!) and she was born to sing it (reggae/rock with a joyful, defiant swagger almost).
Good luck with your gig and release. I'll be traveling this Saturday, back from MN. If flights are not delayed I'll purchase your newest LP upon our return if not shortly thereafter.
This is the one that got a subscription to your channel. Joan's music is phenomenal. She's also fabulous live. Down To Zero is another track I think you'd enjoy.
Joan Armatrading, the third of six children, was born in 1950 in the town of Basseterre in what was then the British colony Saint Christopher and Nevis, in the West Indies. A three-time Grammy Award nominee, Armatrading has also been nominated twice for BRIT Awards as Best Female Artist. She received an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contemporary Song Collection in 1996. In a recording career spanning nearly 50 years, Armatrading has released 20 studio albums, as well as several live albums and compilations. Armatrading first performed in a concert at Birmingham University, England, for her brother at the age of about 16. She only knew her own songs, but her brother asked her to perform something that would be familiar to the audience; she chose "The Sound of Silence". Wikipedia.
Kind words and a good heart is an oldie but goodie. She has a contralto voice. Lowest possible female range but she does well on high notes too. She is amazing!
Wow what a surprise to see someone reacting to this I hope that you went a little further this particular album is a song called "Save Me" that just really showcases a fragile voice it's amazing
Such a beautiful song by a very talented artist. You should try "Show Some Emotion" as well. A brilliant song. Love it and her :) Keep up the good work Daniel. Love your reactions :)
I had never heard of this girl until JustJP reacted to a live performance of this song about a week ago. You should definitely watch it. This girl is amazing.
Thanks! Try Show Some Emotion, Rosie, I Love it When You Call Me Names, Drop the Pilot. Great artist, was lucky to grow up in city with radio stations that played this!
Just felt like hearing this song and enjoyed listening with you. Great reaction. In the 70’s I played her first two albums more than any others-so much do I bought an extra that I suspect is still unopened somewhere 😂 I thought I would wear them out!
I am so glad someone has finally reacted to Joan. She, along with Kate Bush, is my fave female artist. Seen her live and she is awesome and so personal. Needless to say I could recommend 505 of Joan's best songs to listen to, but I’ve narrowed it down to just a “few” I feel you might appreciate, in rough chronological order from 1973 to present: It Could Have Been Better / Conversation / Dry Land / Cool Blue Stole My Heart (live) / Steppin' Out (live) / Save Me / Tall In The Saddle (live) / Down To Zero / Woncha Come On Home / Show Some Emotion / Kissin' And A Huggin' / Willow / Rosie / Barefoot And Pregnant / Baby I / You Rope You Tie Me / All The Way From America / When I Get Right / I’m Lucky / The Weakness In Me / Frustration / Heaven / Talking To The Wall / Strange / Straight Talk / The Shouting Stage / Can’t Let Go / Someone’s In The Background / Hearts And Flowers / More Than One Kind Of Love / Always / True Love / Wrapped Around Her / Sometimes I Don’t Wanna Go Home / Can’t Get Over (How I Broke Your Heart) / Everyday Boy / Trouble / Less Happy More Often / Liza / Empty Highway / Cry / Summer Kisses / This Is Not That / Loving What You Hate / Already There / Glorious Madness.
An emigree from tropical St Kitts and Nevis, one of my 1970's favs. Her talent, lilt and power of her voice set her apart. Suggest her brooding 'Opportunity' as a counterpoint vibe to this one
I've seen Joan many times over the last ten years or so, always a great gig. On the last couple of tours here in the UK she had young, promising artists open for her.
One of my all time favourites. Daniel...how do you find these? Such great taste. You're clearly a wondrous, loving soul. Happy you have heard this. Cheers.
Great songwriter. All her early albums re great. I played nothing but "Back to the Night" for weeks when it was first rreleased. Nob one like her. At one of her shows i saw her go into the wings to dance ....She is kinda shy.
That bottom end drop gets me every time. Another song Down To Zero that has not been mentioned is one of my personal favourites. She is a very accomplished guitarist.

Oh my goodness! I'm so stoked that you got around to this! This was one of my favorites by her back in the 70s. Another one you should check out by Joan is "Down To Zero" (link below). I think you would really love it, maybe even more than this one! Those comments were true -- Joan WAS very underrated at that time! Great reaction and analysis! Thank you, Daniel! 💙✌ Down To Zero - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Brp8Va8XVQw.html
You can't go wrong with albums like Me, Myself I or Show Some Emotion. She has a special magic. Seen her live many times. Fantastic original artists and a great guitarist too.
Joan Armatrading is top 5 greatest female singer/songwriters, and a great guitarist. Wonderful song. Starts like it might be a delicate ballad, then develops into an EPIC Anthem. Greatest opening line of any song about love. "I'm not in love". Open?! Then "But I'm open to persuasion". Breathtaking! Gets me every time. Best Wishes. ☮ PS - I have no relationship with Joan Armatrading whatsoever. I did see her live 1976 or 77. Brilliant!
Dave Matthews once called her album Show Some Emotion one of his favourites. Her guitar playing is magnificient - check out Like Fire for some fireworks. In the 80's she had Peter Gabriel's band on her Walk Under Ladders album, and Dire Strait's Mark Knopfler on the beautiful The Shouting Stage.
One of my all-time favorites. I’ve really been enjoying your channel. Now that you’ve heard this, I have a recommendation: First, if you haven’t already listened to “Sweet Jane” by the Velvet Underground, do that. Then, with both songs fresh in your mind, listen to “Sweet Jane (With Affection)” by Two Nice Girls. I think you will love it.
Drop the Pilot and Me Myself I are two great tracks. Funny her looks reminds me so much of Tracy Chapman and when I saw the picture I was thinking Ah Tracy.
Daniel hi I'm new to your channel. Love your choice in songs.another good 1 from joan is Drop the Pilot.....and if you lov a song with a great story. You should check out a Song called Light of Day by Eoin Hayes.Story goes it laid in his drawer for 22yrs and finally surfaced in 2018 22yrs later it was written about a friend he tragically lost....
I think of her as a sort of female Jimi Hendrix, and now wonder if she too is left-handed. Probably. Surely. We need her for the team. I also think of her as a sort of edgier Roberta Flack, whose music you also must absorb as well. From Joan... her "Stronger Love" is a song every man should absorb, as is "Shouting Stage"...which is about when you reach the shouting stage in your relationship. Not a good sign. A stronger love doesn't dick around with pettiness and jealousy. "All a Woman Needs" is probably another song every man and woman should absorb. "I'm Lucky" is her celebration of not being saddled with superstitions and beliefs that can distort reality and inhibit freedom. Those, along with Love & Affection may be her more compelling handful.
Yes, you pronounced her name OK. She's wonderful -- I'm glad to see someone discovering her now. Her 1983 Best-of-ish compilation _Track Record_ is maybe a desert island disc for me. It was in a lot of record collections in the 80s; I used to come across it in the dorm room or apartment of every young woman I was interested in. The most moving of her songs, for me, is "The Weakness In Me".
This is why I subscribe to your reaction Channel, you have introduced me to some great new music that I probably would never have found otherwise. I've said it in another reaction: (the talktalk video) but it's worth repeating; that you have taking up the mantle of the disc jockeys role. Such a beautiful song you're doing a great job keep up the good work
I went to a Joan Armatrading concert - Toronto 1978 - not knowing what to expect and came away totally in love with Joan & her amazing music! Thank you for taking a chance by reacting to this brilliant singer/songwriter Daniel.
Good call. More Joan hits: "Did I Make You Up?" (1988) "A Woman In Love" (2007) "Frustration" (1983) Armatrading is class and an icon in the Joni Mitchell/Kate Bush league. Still making great albums today. Fun fact: the male backing vocals on "Love & Affection" (1976) were performed by actor Clarke Peters from _The Wire,_ _John Wick,_ etc.
Joan Armatrading is a great singer and songwriter, and also a very fine guitarist. I Would recommend her song, " Show Some Emotion " which has a great Jazz/Funk feel.
I was nearly 30 years younger when I first heard this song. I was working North of Chicago and WXRT played this quite a bit..... Lord, was it so long ago?
@@cherylreichardt I carried mail in Highwood and XRT was on my Walkman for the 4 and a half to 5 hours I was on the route. Helped me keep pace and introduced me to some GREAT music and artists. Hope and pray that you and all here have all of God's Blessings of Peace, Protection and Provision! ✌️
