I loved this song. PJ never got the recognition she deserved. Some of her songs are pretty intense. Thanks for playing this. When the Isley’s ask “Who’s that Lady”? The answer is PJ Harvey, at least for today. ;).

I agree, and she never compromised for a moment. Fun fact. She was guest vocalist/musician on 2 tracks of a Sparklehorse album. Songs are Eyepennies and Piano Fire. Definitely worth a listen.

I love Polly Jean. Saw her live several times early in in her career (30 years ago). I like the title song of the album this song is on, Rid of Me, best. She’s had a long career but I must admit I haven’t heard her latest work of the past 7 or 8 years. She got lots of attention back in the day, Rolling Stone, the Grammys, etc. You said kinda grungy, Daniel: Kurt Cobain said/wrote that he loved her! She had a short relationship with Nick Cave, barely 2 years, 25 years ago. Yet for some silly they are still referenced together. Nick Cave has a 20 yr old son with his wife of more than 2 decades. They had 2 sons-fraternal twins-but tragically one fell off a cliff and died when he was 15. (Apparently after reacting strongly to LSD...) Polly Jean: time to check out her more recent output.

This is her very best most awesomest song in my opinion. It’s quintessential PJH in a nutshell, with the best band lineup (on album or in live performance) of her career: her on guitars, Steve Vaughan on bass, and the brilliant Rob Ellis on drums. Man-Size is a great showcase for the tone of her Gretsch Broadkaster 7609 (there’s no other guitar like it) and the barking, growling, middle-position pickup selector tone fed through her Boss distortion pedal into (at least) 2 amps. Off kilter time signature that changes throughout the song, controlled guitar feedback, a total menace from start to finish. You chose wisely for your first listen

So happy that you got to PJH and loved it 😊 She’s a rock goddess, loved by Kurt Cobain and Nick Cave’s former partner. Raw, experimental and unapologetic. Check out Dress live V Festival 2003 to be blown away by her phenomenal talent and kick ass stage presence 😎

Great reaction, Daniel. She comes off a bit edgy. Well it shows in this video. “Man-Size” Previously you mentioned watching a Beck interview. Daniel, I thought you might like to see a PJ Harvey interview. PJ Harvey on MTV’s 120 minutes 1993 (full interview) during interview her videos got blocked or edited. She’s not American. She’s British. Hahaha. WOW! This host is so laid back check out his wardrobe. The MTV hosts rarely dressed formal. That’s cool. The host is interviewing PJ on the stairs. Unusual. I grew up in the 70’s. I was a teen when MTV made its debut. PJ Harvey is a indie & alternative musician. Have a pleasant day. ✌️

Yes, PJ is a powerhouse. Nice to see you coming around to her. This whole album is incredibly intense, she's monstrous in a great way. A modern continuation of her spirit might be Courtney Barnett -- check out "Nameless Faceless (2019)"

Assuming you do more of her songs, I'd suggest doing at least a few more of her early ones before moving on to her later career. Songs like Sheela Na Gig, and Dress, for starters.

I love this song and music video. It seems like on the surface she doesn't really care much about it, she doesn't seem to be even trying to lip sync the lyrics, no makeup, the faces she's making aren't particularly attractive, and the background seems pretty neutral and randomly put together. Then you hit that final segment, the lighting changes, and suddenly she's shifted and appears more focused on the lyrics, putting forth a message. The whole production, and sometimes the appearance of a lack of production on this one sort of fascinates me.

Not many artists have gone through such an evolution as PJ has throughout her career. You need to listen to her Mercury Music Prize winning album Let England Shake to understand how far her songwriting has progressed. It's a concept album based in the most part around WW1.

This is probably my favorite PJ Harvey video. Not that she has a lot of good ones to speak of, IMO. She's never really put too much emphasis on her music videos but for me this one is very entertaining. Which is impressive given the fact that it's only her sitting on a chair and playfully acting out the song.

Just to add to her relationship with Nick Cave: I had heard in an interview with Nick Cave (when he was talking about his addictions) that they were using together when PJ decided to get clean. Alas, I can find no reference to those statements. After the breakup, Nick wrote the song "Brompton Oratory" to describe how she broke up with him.

Do you have insider knowledge about drug use on her part? I have never known her to have done any drugs whatsoever except pot a couple times, and a little alcohol. You’re suggesting she was on *heroin*??

@@slacktoryrecords4193 Alas, I can recall Nick Cave talking about it, and choosing drugs over PJ, but I can find no online reference. Maybe he was stretching tales when he said that during that interview? Maybe he was joking around and I missed the joke? Anyway, I have edited the comment, changing it from a fact to something I remember him saying... Maybe in 10,000 days On Earth when he was digging deeply into his past? No, that was when he talked over "Where the Wild Roses Grow" with Kylie Minogue.

@@richardchilton7311 yes, that sounds right, but he didn’t say she was a user herself. To my knowledge, no one has, and she’s been open about what soft drugs she’s done, and I know she’s had a pint and a cocktail here and there, but never used hard drugs or had an addiction. She’s had an eating disorder in the past, but that’s it.
