That's Tommy Shaw on lead vocals and he's singing harmony with the other two singers of the group Dennis DeYoung and guitarist JY Young. Styx started as a Prog Rock and even hard rock be became sort of an Art Rock/Pop band by the early 80's. They have some great songs from their peak era like "Lady", "Come Sail Away", "Babe", "The Best of Times", "Too Much Time on My Hands", , "Don't Let It End", and "Show Me the Way". Other notable songs include , "The Grand Illusion", "Blue Collar Man", "Crystal Ball", "Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)", "Rockin' the Paradise", "Boat on the River", and "Suite Madame Blue"

I probably played this 15 or 20 times consecutively the first time I heard it, and that was back when you had to rewind the tape to do it. I was totally sold on Styx after that... at least until their Mr. Roboto days. (Edit: "On the lam" is slang for "on the run"... comes from the word lamster a synonym for fugitive.)

In 2006, Styx did a show with Cleveland’s Contemporary Youth Orchestra and Choir that eventually went to DVD. I think that you would get a kick out of the performances. Here’s Renegade from that show: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HquvpZ1xRik.html

"Crystal ball" is one of my favorite songs by STYX, I am going to use it in my time travel story when the main character is preparing to contact time travelers in the future by doing "an experiment in the 4th dimension". It's based on an idea I had in high school back in the early 80's. Also, you mentioned in another video (think it might have been "in the year 2525" one, about someday someone might open a portal and some beast comes out that we know nothing about. That's exactly what happens in my story! And my story is about humanity in the next 1100 years.

Daniel, Renegade was written by Styx guitarist Tommy Shaw and he also is the vocalist here but he lets guitarist James Young do the solo. Renegade is played near the start of the 4th quarter of every Pittsburgh Steelers' home game at Heinz Field, so besides being a classic Styx song, it's well known nationally among football fans. You can imagine it's impact in the stadium cranked up to 11 (Spinal Tap reference) with 68,000 screaming, Terrible Towel waving fans. Some opposing football players know it as that hangman song. It's usually played as the encore and final song at Styx concerts. Styx The Grand Illusion(1977) is arguably their best album with THE GRAND ILLUSION, FOOLING YOURSELF, COME SAIL AWAY, CASTLE WALLS and MISS AMERICA are among their more popular songs.

i've been watching a lot of your videos for the past week or so. there is a simple reason why i keep watching, which i will get to shortly, but lets start with the fact that you are choosing the best of the best of rock music from the best years of rock, late 1960's into the 1970's through the 80's (and into the 90's ). this is the music i grew up with and it is, as you are fond of saying, "awesome music ! " so, now we can get to why i keep watching, and it is you. you have a way of expressing yourself when you are listening, and hearing something that you like that is almost intoxicating. a smile comes to your face, you furrow your brow, you exclaim "YES !", your smile turns into a grin .... it is the look of joy and wonder that comes across your face that tells me, "wow, i love this song", and I can see and feel it is for the same reason i love this music. as for Styx, they have a lot of great music and their work evolves from one album to the next. try "too much time on my hands", but don't watch the official 1970's video, it is kinda cheesy.

I'd say that the criminal wasn't the 'good guy', but he was definitely the protagonist, because in any first person narrative, the viewpoint character is always the protagonist. Being 'on the lamb' is a fairly classic, if dated, term for being on the run, hiding when and where it was possible.

Renegade has been my top favorite from this band since I first heard it in the 6th grade (waaaay back in 1978). Another one that Tommy Shaw sings on is "Too Much Time On My Hands" (my 2nd favorite song from Styx). I've always preferred his voice over Dennis DeYoung's... A few other favorites are - Don't Let It End, Show Me The Way, Babe, Best of Times, & Lady. I saw them in concert once & they end every show with this song. The place was dead quiet during the Acapella part, but as soon as the beat dropped, the entire stadium full of people were on their feet & dancing, singing along, clapping, & stomping their feet during the chanting to the heavy drum beats. It was so loud that you could barely hear the band - LOL!

Saw these guys live last year (ah remember gigs? Sighhhh!) and Tommy Shaw's voice is in incredible shape after all these years. Styx, Toto, Boston, Journey and Foreigner all broke through in the late 70s (despite the prevailing taste at the time being for disco, disco and more disco) with rocking hits in this vein, and were all pretty much universally hated by the critics - but their stuff stands up pretty well, it has to be said. Of the bands I listed, by the way, Toto are (IMHO) the best, and also the most underrated (in the US at least, internationally it was a different story).

Just a little interesting trivia for this song: In the early years of the show Supernatural, Eric Kripke (creator/first director of Supernatural and now director/producer for The Boys) refused to use canned music for his show, so he used a lot of the very songs he grew up with and to this day his use of this song in one of the episodes is recognized as one of the best uses of a soundtrack on a television show. If you don't watch Supernatural, some background for the episode... the brothers who hunt monsters were hunting a shifter who was trying to rob a bank and killing people and taking their shapes to do it. The bros of course killed it but they were wanted by the feds for some of the questionable things they'd done in the past in their efforts to save innocents. So they had to find a way to get out of the building w/out getting caught. Here's a clip of the scene that the song was used in. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZXpV19PSjV0.html

You really need to see Styx in concert now that they're back on tour. They started out as a great live act without much radio airplay, and then the DJ on Chicago's main rock station played their power ballad "Lady" until everyone got it. Live, the current lineup without Dennis has a lot of Tommy, and they usually end the show with an extended version of "Renegade" ("you want more - we got more"). The album versions are great, but in concert the rock is turned-up to "12". Concert blu-rays to see are "Return To Paradise" and "The Grand Illusion/Pieces Of Eight" (where they performed those whole albums from start to finish). The medley of 20+ songs on "One With Everything (with CYO)" is also awesome. RU-vid has some old concerts from the 70's that would be great if of better quality. This album has a loose theme of various professions. This one is a criminal. You also have: factory worker, gambler/investor/risktaker, office professional, athlete, artist/musician, healthcare/psychologist, writer, politician, and philosopher/theologian.
