Diana sings as if she lives in the song! The soul freezes or opens with Diana's voice. I am a musician who has been with music for years, and believe me, I have not heard such a tone in all these past years.

ABSOLUTELY!!!! THIS version. i always recommend this version (but no one listens). I was at the show (nassau colliseum) where it was recorded. it was my first dead show and Branford's first as well. incredible night. one of the best shows i've ever attended. they were all ON FIRE that night...
My Grateful Dead story: I was bartending at a local pub, in Nassau county (Long Island) - while my friend, Kerry, was waiting for me to get off. (11-7 shift.) Two good looking guys walked in the bar, started hanging out with us and said they had two extra tickets to see "The Dead" at Madison Square Garden/NYC and would we like to go?!?! We immediately said, "Hell Yes!" Man, it was like a conveyer belt of drugs *INSIDE* of the stadium! A joint being passed one way, as a bag of 'shrooms came the other way!!! It was a BLAST! I never felt so happy, loved and safe while being SO HIGH around strangers! GREAT MUSIC! GREAT PEOPLE! GREAT TIME! One of my favorite memories of times past! Side note: The parking lot, before the concert, was *just* as cool!!! 'Dead Heads' selling homeade jewelry, clothes, food and other accoutrements! Dire wolf, (Canis dirus), wolf that existed during the Pleistocene Epoch (2.6 million to 11,700 years ago). It is probably the most common mammalian species to be found preserved in the La Brea Tar Pits in southern California. but in this case it's a metaphor lol

Love jerry's pedal-steel playing. aside from hearing it on more dead songs, david crosby's solo album, new riders of the purple sage, probably his most recognizable pedal steel performance is on CSN&Ys 'teach your children'....although i'd imagine most of the world doesn't realize that's jerry.

Brokedown Palace and Ripple are the two songs that I would recommend. America author Stephen Brust wrote a novel by the title of Brokedown Palace in honour of the Grateful Dead.
Garcia and hunter wrote a lot of songs about cards and gambling as perhaps a metaphor for the risks and unknowable outcomes in life. I think they played a lot of cards on the bus. The charactor in the song cant pass up the opportunity to win a game but the dire wolf may murder him in cards or as the song implies, draw a “misssissippi flush” which is any five cards and a gun. Other wonderful card related songs are Deal and Loser among others. The ideas of chance and risk with the motivations behind it are a key to many of their songs. Maybe try Terrapin station album version. Or any of their songs really. Thank you for reacting to the Dead. You always do such a great job and have a keen sense when analyzing songs. Another interesting analysis of the Dead's lyrics on your part. I've heard the band play this song since my first show in 1978. To me, Dire Wolf's simplicity works well as a "sing around the camp fire" song that still works with 15,000 people sitting in an arena. You mentioned the part relating the Don't Murder Me line to the Zodiac Killer in San Francisco. I saw an interview with Garcia about this. He said he'd be driving home late at night and would stop at a red light. Then another car would pull up next to him. Since no one knew who the Zodiac Killer was, it could be anybody. Jerry said he'd catch himself thinking in those moments "Don't murder me...please don't murder me", not know if the other driver might be the killer. So he added it to the song to capture those moments of sudden fear we experience. You also mentioned your next Dead reaction would be to a longer jam...why not try The Other One, a song Jerry wrote for rhythm guitar player Bob Weir. No one on you tube has reacted to that yet that I'm aware of.
Workingman’s and American Beauty were recorded in the same year! 2 of the all time great studio albums released in the same year. Let that sink in a minute. I think you will love the Europe 72 live album when you get around to it! Might I suggest “Tennessee Jed” “Brown Eyed Women” and “Jack Straw” You won’t be sorry.... You have so dang much to look forward to, not just with Dead music, but there is also tons of Jerry Garcia Band music, Jerry and Merle, Old and In The Way, and more. Jerry played!!!! Truly amazing I never attended a Dead show and of course had hundreds of chances. I think I knew deep down that if I attended one, I might join the Deadheads. Can't complain how it turned out. This track is among my favorite Dead songs.
Maybe it's just me, but I found the Dead kinda dead until I got the "Working Man's Dead" album. They grew on me the more I listened. Had the same problem with The Band, but now I appreciate their works, too.
After their second and third studio albums, the Dead were in a lot of debt to Warner Bros. They decided to cut the production aspects back for Workingman's Dead and American Beauty. It was also a time when Jerry Garcia was picking up the pedal steel guitar. So it made sense that they do some "roots" music. Meaning country/folk. It was quite a surprise for the Deadheads who were used to the psychedelic sounds of their previous albums and concerts. Of course, it wouldn't do that they take a traditional approach, they kinda turned it on it's head. These songs were tradition based but not traditionally executed. Workingman's and American are widely considered their best studio albums. If you want to try something that jams live, try looking into their Europe '72 album. There's tons to choose from and all of it well performed and recorded.

The wolf devours him, and he becomes the wolf. "Don't murder me," he begs the wolf (once he realizes it is a wolf!), and it ends with him, as the wolf, begging the men not to murder him. That's how it seems to me. I never thought of the wolf being the devil. That makes it even more interesting.

Bruh, you don't have to pause it for Dead songs. Also the Game of Thrones author is a big deadhead and put the Dire Wolves in the books because of this song. Also the Queen of Spades is the Death card. Cut my deck to the Queen of Spades but the cards were all the same = inevitable doom.
It's worth noting that the pedal steel guitar is a very complex instrument that requires the use of both hands, both feet, and both knees to operate it (knees operate levers on medial and lateral sides of each knee). This allows it to change the pitch of certain strings to enable playing more varied and complex music than any previous steel guitar design. Jerry had only been playing the instrument a short time when this song and "Teach Your Children" were recorded in 1970. But he would sit there on the couch at his house that he shared with Robert Hunter at the time and practice the pedal steel for 10 hours a day while wearing headphones and watching the TV on mute. I wish I could dedicate myself to something like that.
Dire wolves were real but apparently went extinct about 10,000 years ago. Also, all the Stark children in Game of Thrones had dire wolves as pets / companions.
So you know, there is a book out there already, called The Complete Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics, where the author, David Dodd, breaks down each song written and performed by the band, no covers, in order, from 1965-1995. It is comprehensive and well written, with some nice illustrations and a foreword by Mr. Robert Hunter himself.

Yes "Eyes of the World" from Without A Net with Branford Marsalis would be a good audio reaction. Really hear the jazz and other influences plus how they "Fit In the Song to adapt to the musician. After that try John Hiatt "Slow Turning" . Hiatt's another excellent song writer/singer- "Thing Called Love" done by Bonnie Raitt is one of his. peace dog, mojohand
"Workingman's Dead" was the only album I ever bought from them. They never did anything like it before and never really did one like it again. A masterpiece.
Lots of Dead for you to explore. Might I suggest that you pick some tracks from the Terrapin Station album next? Estimated Prophet, Samson and Delilah, or the title track - Terrapin Station (make sure to do all of the parts - a bit over 16 minutes in total). If you want to do another version comparison video, you could do Dancin' in the Streets from this album and the best known original 1964 version by (Motown group) Martha and the Vandellas. There are also versions by The Mamas & The Papas, and Van Halen.
Other songs that when performed live could really show off the power of what the Good Ol' Grateful Dead could achieve as a band: "Wharf Rat," "Cold Rain and Snow," "The Other One," "Scarlet Begonias/Fire on the Mountain," "Not Fade Away," "Let it Grow." I prefer the 70's lineups for these songs, personal preference but Jerry is a better electric guitarist when he's younger. The different keyboardists all have merit in one way or another, but Keith is my man. My favorite deep cut that's a beautiful song that hardly anyone but hardcore Deadheads know is "The Wheel." Some of my favorite lyrics from Robert Hunter yet in that song.
@nealpierson I've had "The Wheel", "Peggy O", and "Cold, Rain, and Snow" stuck hard in my head for the past week or so. I go through these phases, and the only cure is to search out many, many, versions of the songs and scratch that itch! A couple of weeks ago it was "Wharf Rat" "Jack A Row" and "Stella Blue".........I never know what's next!

@@nealpierson9072 Yes sir......try that whole show. It's a very strong 77 show! Cornell, Boston, Hartford, Buffalo get the 77 pub, and rightly so, but that Tuscaloosa show sure holds it's own! Archives.org has the show.
There are just so many genres that this band covers. People have lots of great suggestions here. "China Cat Sunflower/I Know You Rider" from Europe 72 is a great jam that goes on a journey from psychedelic rock to jazz fusion and then perfectly transforms into a longing folk rock tune. "St. Stephen/The Eleven" from 1969 is a pure 15-25 minute psychedelic freakout, depending on the version. That's not even getting into the various completely different versions of "Dark Star," which range usually 22-40 minutes depending on the year and night. "Viola Lee Blues" is a ripping heavy blues rocker. Then they could go and do songs like "Ripple" and "Brokedown Palace," which are subtle and heartfelt. And then there's "Terrapin Station," which is a grand magnificent prog epic orchestral opus. And there's so many that I can't even mention them all. Just pick one. You'll be good.
I don't have much more to add other than I was late in becoming a Deadhead. All my friends in college would go on and on about them and listen to poor quality bootleg tapes which I found to be horrible. I did get to see them live, once, when Jerry was still with us. They did Terrapin Station, my favorite, because its kind of proggy. But one day, out on Lake George, my friends played China Cat into Know New Rider, I admit, I was stoned, but that was It! I've been a Deadhead since. And I know you don't need to be high to love the Dead.

After the first Spock's Beard song I did, I want to do a full album by them next (which is why I haven't really done anymore of their work yet..). I'll likely do Snow song by song in order.
@@DiconDissectionalReactions : Snow is excellent, however it’s Christian overtones may be not to welcome by all. Plus Neal Morse Spock’s Beard is uploaded by fans...so not the best quality recording. And it is a double album. I’d suggest a later work, the 2013 album Brief Nocturnes. Much better sound quality and excellent fun songs. You should do Scarlet Begonias -> Fire on the Mountain from May 8th 1977 Barton Hall, Cornell U. There are better shows and better versions out there, but those tracks are pretty great. Personally, I like scarletFire from May 13th 1977. the jam takes me places. One man's opinion.
