In this video I will be taking a first look at the FNF Talon Fly Tying Vice. You can check out the product at the link below. What better way to show you the vice than to tie a fly on it, so I will also be tying a Damsel fly.
www.fnflyfishi...
I had several requests to complete a review of this product but a review at this point would be premature. I think at least six months of using the vice is called for before attempting to review the vice.
Price £499.00
The vice comes in a smart cordura carrying bag with a small set of allan keys to tighten up the various elements of the vice.
The vice comes with a lifetime guarantee which is comforting for a vice at this price point.
I hope you enjoy an initial look at this new to market fly tying vice.

Right now I am tying on a Renzetti, it's my first true rotary vise. I have been tying on it for 3 years now and I am not sure if I really like it yet. I got a few vises, I sort of collect them. Started with a Thompson A, went to a first-gen Regal (pedestal), then an HMH, love that one. Dyna King ( pro) and another that was not made for long, forgot who made it. This one looks like a limited made hand made with CNC machining. Low production numbers are going to make it hard to get, and at 499 pounds it's not a terrible price, the upper end of the Renzetti line is running close to 900 USD, and some of the limited editions well past that. As long as people want well-made things, there will be people who will tend to that market. It's going to be interesting to see what you have to say in say a year or two about it. They are going to sell every single one they make, I bet the waiting list has a few hundred names on it already!

@@lindsayiflyfish I find that buying good stuff in the first place means you only have to buy it once. Good cookware comes to mind here. And it has nothing to do with the price tag. I still fish with Hardy Fly Reels I bought 40 years ago for a lot of money then and I long forgot how much I paid. It's the same for optics and guns. I lust for a John Rigby 275 Rigby. I know my old Winchester will put venison on the ground but damn those are just so choice, it's the attention to detail and the things they do you can see with your eye!

I have been tying on my vise for close to twenty years now and I probably won't change, but this video is quite nice and if you say it is well made, I will believe you all day long! A lot of vises are kind of copies of previous styles with possibly a few improvements. That is how you get better equipment. The Law Vise is nice, but who wants to spend the crazy money on it? Many people are very opinionated regarding vises, myself I tie with a Norvise, I won't buy another. I will however share this video with others! You have done a nice review!

That would be a great fly at Lechlade. Impressed with the vice and dount it will stay at £500 for long. The Snowbee Waldron started at about £190 and ended up at £499. I like the tip on the bump with the underdressing to keep the marabou tail from twisting.

Lindsay, I got one of the last vices that LW made; got his details from sensei Mcphail. I paid slightly less than the one in the video although realise they are now very expensive collectors items. The reason I contacted Davie was I could see how easy it was to get fingers around the hook and I've got hands like Shrek,s older brother. The vice in your video looks more or less the same as the LAWs so see no reason to doubt that it would be just as good. Tip is good for debarbing before you tie, again courtesy of Davie Mcphail.

A good introduction to the vice. Obviously time will tell but I am very pleased with mine and amazed at how little pressure you need to get a really secure hold on all different sizes and styles of flies. On my old vice pulling down firmly to say lock in spun deer hair would inevitably see the hook start to tilt down. Not on this vice!

It looks like a very nice vice. I've noticed MANY you tube tyers do not make use of their rotary function. I have a rotary myself but I'd put my money towards a good set of jaws that really grip the hook well over the rotary function. ATB, looking forward to the next review of the vise! P.S. I'll stay tuned to see if you take full advantage of the rotary;)
@lindsayiflyfish
@lindsayiflyfish 3 года назад
I think one of the main reasons you don't see more YT tiers using rotary is that the camera focus is fixed on the fly. Not only that but many folks just do not have access to a rotary vice. I will see how it goes over the next six months, so far I am really enjoying using it.
@gregb8824

@@lindsayiflyfish so does the camera get in the way??? Certainly a spinning fly would not affect camera focus would it??? Most tyers just seem to neglect the rotary function as near as I can tell. Beautiful vise all the same, looking forward to its inspiration in your future vids.

Jim McLaughlin makes a vise with exact Law jaws, but with two knuckles for adjustment. That's obviously the ultimate version, but Jim's hand-made vises are SERIOUSLY precision engineered, and he cannot make many. For anyone who just cannot wait for a McLaughlin/Law, the new Talon would be the best alternative. Once you've tied on a Law type vise with those amazing jaws, you'll never want to downgrade. Good enough for Davie McPhail and Oliver Edwards, is good enough for me. I think the Talon will rise in price pretty quickly, once the waiting list runs into the hundreds. Inevitably, some will try to cash their early order in for a quick profit (like the Rolex watch market).

Thanks for the video Lindsay, I've a few questions. How does your hand fit in the gap between vice and hook when the jaws are inverted (like when tying a crab fly) ? Also if you have time, could you do another video showing the whole vice and the adjustment points etc.? Any idea what the biggest hook it'll take is? The website just has that picture of a 2/0 but that's not that big really. Cheers Martyn

@lindsayiflyfish 3 года назад
Hi Martyn, As I have never attempted a Crab pattern I am not sure what you mean. I will be doing a review on the vice in around six months this was really just an initial look. As for hook sizes unless you are talking shark fishing I am pretty sure this will take any fly fishing hook you can throw at it. I hope that helps a bit.

@@lindsayiflyfish for the crab thing I mean, put a hook in the vices as normal then rotate the vice 180 degrees so it's upside down and stop. How is access to the hook inside the gape with the vice in that position? Does that make sense?

With the utmost respect, I do not understand the claims that the Law vise, or it's various reincarnations, is/are the ultimate fly vise. On every engineering and practical use criteria I can list, the Dyna-king Deluxe Barracuda continues to stand out as the ultimate tool.
