With Dom and even Commander mastered, remastered, whatever, there’s a variety of value and cards people want and play with. This set has rift, the 10 lands, aaand? Bruvac will plummet with a proper printing now. I presume Karlov will drop too once it hits players’ hands. This set is so underwhelming. It shouldn’t strictly be about value, but when you jack up regular draft packs, most people will literally choose to draft anything else that’s cheap. Draft is meant to be a fun and quick thing to do on a weeknight or afternoon at a friends. People aren’t looking to mortgage their house again to get a box.
The foil retros seem to be settling at some high prices. The pack at 10:40 had a $40 foil retro and a $40 anime card. And the foil retro at 11:45 that you say is not a hit is a $20 card. And the pack at 12:35 had the first three cards at $40, $20, and $60. Even the retro foil Illusionist's Bracers at 14:22 is a $20 card. And the retro foil version of the card at 15:15 is worth *more* than the borderless anime version of it. Even the retro non-foil common at 17:14 is a $1 card.
It does look fun to open and it's hard to say no to 7-8 shocklands per box no matter where they end up pricewise. Ravnica is also my favorite plane, my themed cube, and an anchor for so many memories (like my first GP Top 8 was RRG limited in 2006).
Nope. Sorcery Contested Realm has fully grabbed my heart and wallet. Wotgreed makes me feel like a horrible person supporting their company. 👎 Sad but true.
It's interesting to watch these box openings. This set, like MOM & Aftermath just didn't do it for me. I completely agree...this set IS OVERPRICED. I'm not sure that Magic is on a path that is sustainable. Over-priced sets, cards tanking in price, with little value to be found in a set like this make it re4al easy to just sit back & watch rather than buy. They need to look at the LOTR special edition...that set was done right (in my eyes). It had new cards that are holding value, chase cards that continue to be chased, and there was just something that's hard to put to words...that felt exciting. Thanks POA...glad you got some nostalgia out of this.
I am probably alone in this, but I wish they'd stop doing old border treatments. I thought it was neat with Time Spiral as a gimmick of the set, but a lot of the modern art doesn't go well with the older style of the border. They aren't all like that, but most of them look sort odd.
If stores underpurchased and people are itching to buy a lot of this, then the price will likely stay elevated. Shock lands might not fall nearly as much as people seem to think is guaranteed.
As someone who is new to magic and doesn't have these cards, are these good cards to have and a good set to open? Or are these just cheap commons and uncommons that I could pick up for .5-1 a piece?
Bought a draft box @ $200 from LGS which was a mistake considering online they're $165-75, so I hope to hit at least 5-7 shocks with maybe a few of the other high end cards for value back out. Should've went with a collector booster from online somewhere when most I'm seeing are for 250-60. Def massive price fluctuations on this release.
I've decided against buying product for a long while due to the layoffs that occurred. Hasbro needs to recognize they should just let the golden goose be. But this product looks miserably not worth $300, but looks fine right below $200. The average 8 shocks regardless of how people on the price point will still crash the prices to below $10 I'm fairly sure. Maybe the old borders will save themselves a $20 price tag, but I'm finding it hard to justify nearly $300 for a box when singles will be quite a bit cheaper.
I agree with you your last comment. People like the product just not the price. They want the shock lands and waiting for the crash. And hoping that they don’t crash that hard.
Would like to get a box of this, but as you said the price is way too high. Lots of cool cards though. If the price tanks I'll probably go for one, otherwise just buy some singles that I really want. Those old bordered treatments look great also.
Agreed that this product will immensely depreciate in price. They have to plan reprints a bit better over the span of a few years; Smothering Tithe and Doubling Season should both have been in this Rav Remaster release (and maybe not in WOE).
I am skeptical of a collector booster with only 4 hits per pack (ok 4.2). Also no idea why they'd do the full rare split card 'cycle... I guess they felt like they might've only given a glancing blow to the nuggets the first time around and wanted to make sure they get both of them this time. I have not bought anything from this set so far. Will pick up a draft box if it's the right price but to actually draft with.
I've really only been collecting and playing magic since Wilds of Eldraine and to me, this product is cool in that I can get my hands on a lot of great cards from across the 12(?) Ravnica sets that I never saw. The downside is certainty the price point and that distributors don't want to buy. The guy who runs the local game room here won't even have any of this product because his distribution guy didn't want to get any and the only other place in town with cards is Walmart and theyre still on the shit list from that early sale stuff apparently. Might take my draft box in, when I get it, so I can draft it with the homies and save everyone some money.
I feel like if they knew they were going to put shock lands here (I feel they should have, they plan far ahead) unfinity should have had fetchlands or something else to attract people instead, its not much but would have made this set slightly better at this point
I really want some of this set because it does hold a special place for me - the Ravnica block was when I returned to magic, so I am looking forward to it.....
I've never pulled a cyclonic rift but the old border foil is probably at the top of my most wanted list from this set lol. the kamigawa - ravnica period was when I started playing FNMs, many fond memories of a lot of these cards, the nostalgia factor is strong with this set haha
