Fly fishing for trout, fly fishing for Cutthroat in the Pacific Northwest has been a passion of mine for the last 40 years. I have spent most of my life fly fishing the great Pacific Northwest to include fly fishing in Alaska, fly fishing in Washington, fly fishing in Oregon, fly fishing in Idaho and fly fishing in Montana. I generally will fly fish and practice catch and release when fly fishing for trout, but I have been known to catch and cook during camping trips to many of my favorite fishing spots. I love to fly fish lakes in the higher elevation, though I have a few lowland lakes that are fly fishing only that are also on my most favorite list. I have a ton experience fly fishing rivers for trout and always enjoy discovering new rivers to fly fishing in and around the greater Pacific Northwest. I am also an accomplished at casting a fly rod - whether it is fly fishing casting for distance, fly fishing casting for accuracy, the double haul, roll cast, tower cast and many more fly fishing casting techniques - I can show you the basics when it comes to casting a fly rod. I also will cover many topics that relate to getting started with fly fishing. From your basic fly fishing setups, flies and fly boxes - we cover all the fly fishing needs for beginners. Thanks for taking the time to tune into FlyFishDan and I hope you consider subscribing to my fly fishing channel. Cheers and FISH-ON!!!

Bought the Simms Guide Series waders back in '94. Finally replaced them with the G3s last year. (bummed that I missed out on this upgrade). Totally agree that they are worth the $$. I think I spent around $600 for them in '94 (and that was a lot for me back in those days) but I got every penny back and more! Still have them and after a lot of aqua seal, they still keep me dry. I will keep them around as a backup in case I ever go for a swim on a trip and need to let my G3s dry out for a bit. 🙂

Great review and I appreciate your input...that is a long time on your original pair! I think I might be looking into the zip waders for my next pair...so easy in and out!

I'll have to check those out! Price point makes me a bit nervous for longevity. I hope they are rock solid! You'll have to report back after the season.

They have a lifetime warranty so I’m hoping they are tough. I’ll let you know!! Fish on!

Dan, it would be nice to see more brands evaluated. I have the Simms G3 after my Dan Bailey pair finally gave out (RIP DB waders...) and I bought them because it was Simms, Paragucci or Orvis and of the three the Simms seemed to have the features I was used to. That being said, they were EXPENSIVE and (maybe?) not all of your subscribers can jump into SIMMS, so it would be nice to see some alternatives. Anyway, just a thought... Fish on !

I have a topic or maybe just a question. Is it worth buying pre tied flies or tying my own? It seems more expensive to tie my own but I want the satisfaction of catching a fish on one I tied.

It's a good question; today.... I have chosen to buy my flies from local fly shops. When I retire, or just fish for a living (hopefully one day soon!) I'll start tying...because you are right; so, satisfying to catch one that you created.

Fly tying works out cheaper by the fly but it’s an addictive cycle of buying new materials every payday 😂 also can be very time consuming but so worth it catching fish on your own flies!

Nice review Dan and good advice on buying a good quality wader. What wading shoes do you use?

Thank you Thomas! I had a pair of Simms for years until they finally fell apart. I chose Korkers for their versatility - so far so good!

I have never shopped for waders and I don't know how to size them. I am a somewhat large guy who really has issues with buying shoes, so I would think that waders would present a similar issue. I am wet wading currently in some water shoes with felt souls, but I guess I will eventually have to bite the bullet and shop for a pair. Thanks for highlighting these. Do you have any suggestions on packs or carry options for my gear? Maybe that could be a Friday topic...

That's a great topic Jon - thank you for the tip! The new G3 got rid of the belt loops in the side, making them much more comfortable for all sizes. I hope they work out for you!
