Hope you have fun playing Minecraft and it helps to bond with your son. If you do want to customize your character, there are lots of free options that are built in, they just put the 'featured' and 'seasonal' type ones at the top which you usually have to pay for. Might be something to do outside of a video. Also, if you eventually want to play Minecraft WITH your son, but don't want the hassle of managing your own server, the Minecraft Realms subscriptions are about $8 per month and will let you play multi-player together. And yes, you can eat rotten flesh, but it poisons you for a short time. :)
