There is no age limit, although treatment should be made the earlier the better in order to avoid possible complications arising from the disease itself and the psychological problems that may appear. The ideal age for surgery in patients with symptomatic Pectus Excavatum is from 8 years old to pre-pubescence, 12-14 years old (adolescents prior to growth spurt). But several patients in their 20s, 30s and even 40s have been operated on. The suitability for surgery is not only the age, but the type and degree of the Pectus Excavatum, as well as the stiffness of the thorax (since it becomes higher and higher over the years and the result of the surgery is less successful). Each patient is unique so he/she must be assessed by an expert thoracic surgeon specialised in Pectus Excavatum and Pectus Up.
