Housing managers from northern Manitoba’s First Nations focused on their housing solutions in the Feb. 2024th workshop. Their list of priorities was not only more housing, but better housing by growing capacity in the construction trades in First Nation communities. Apprenticeship training is available in high schools in most settler communities but not offered in First Nations and this inequitable access has to change to improve education success and housing on First Nation reserves. Towards resolving the housing crisis on reserves, York Factory First Nation is building a trades post-secondary facility and a dormitory to serve northern First Nations. Also, Pusiko provides a solution. A First Nation run housing and commercial centre will offer many housing units to Indigenous people adjacent to Thompson, Manitoba, which was a sunset community with many barriers to First Nation housing. The workshop was sponsored by SSHRC partnerships through the Quality in the Built Environment and Mino Bimaadiziwin partnership.
