I'm a FN person and I live in a reserve. I agree with this guy, he's not a racist or a bigot, he's just telling the truth. Calling people racist is a serious accusation, if you're going to call someone a racist, you'd better have evidence/proof. First Nations people have to start asking where all the money given by the government is going.
@Junokaii

Wish there was more people like you on reserves etc. Or is there and we're just not hearing about it?
@briseisjay7898

No, I don't think there are. I think most FN people are Left leaning. Because all they get is CBC.
@Junokaii

Awiya Nish That explains a lot. Left leaning people tend to victimize any weaknesses they have as people and turn it into a national issue. Why we need to privatize it. It's nothing but government funded anti-government propaganda lol.

I'm native and I somewhat agree with this guy. Even though I think he's a racist, there is a lot of corruption on native reserves in Canada. I'm from a reserve and I don't even know how much our chief makes, and is it a coincidence that all of his childhood friends run the reserve with very little education? Hmmmm....

Ezra said nothing racist. He's exposing corruption. Corruption isn't a race. What would be racist would be to say you can't call it corruption if it's committed by Indians.

+Glen Russell If honestly played any part in this,, the land wouldn't have been stolen to begin with! So many ignorant people are butt hurt about the FACT that if your living in Canada and your not native,, your on stolen land! Something the government needs to work out! Overpaying a chef on each reserve is a lot cheaper than paying off each individual now isn't it!!
@glenrussell9975
@glenrussell9975 9 лет назад
+Sarah Stauffer - Then blame your Indian people who turned on their own people and signed off because of their own greed just like your wonderful crooked chiefs and band members are today. Stolen land indeed!! Ahahaha!! So you grow your own food or work, pay taxes, contribute to Canada? Or are you one of the ones who sit on their asses and live in the past (or should I say thrive on negativity of the past), blame everyone else, not taking responsibility, while biting the hand that feeds you and burning the Canadian flag?

Just for the record. I live a few miles from that Atlantic Canada chief that took 1.8 million for salary last year. The size of the reserve population is 80. Her second in command made 343,000. And by the way, thats MY money you are sucking up from MY taxes. I'm betting that you get your treaty cheque every two weeks. "nuff said. Live well my friend, but not at my expense!

Canada’s courts have upheld tax exemptions as a means to preserve the collective rights of First Nations, ensuring that the Crown does not attempt to erode the reserve land base through taxation.
@TheFrunk39

Thomas NH, the government is AUDITED and their laundry hung out, and so are all government departments. So when we hand out billions each year, why shouldn't the taxpayer know where that money is going? Don't you agree that the native people themselves would benefitfrom such audits? We must look after our young, our weak and our poor, but we have no obligation to the lazy and takers.
@Thomas_Oklahoma
@Thomas_Oklahoma 11 лет назад
The federal government has made little effort to explain the policy to Canadians, allowing an unhealthy resentment to grow. There has been little counterpoint to the pressure from the right on this issue. Given the public confusion, it seems a worthwhile exercise to actually do the math and see what light it sheds on the matter.

the question is NOT: "how many rich chiefs are there?" the question is: "how many chiefs overlook massive government budgets for their reserve---that have millions of dollars unaccounted for---and have gone seemingly NO WHERE into thee reserves they are sworn to protect?" the answer? TOO MANY.

"So what you are saying is that you want to have self-government within a country governed by elected representation"??? Tribal Sovereignty would be no different than a Provencal Government. The "Canadian Aboriginal Affairs" needs to be abolished and replaced with Representatives, maybe six regional Reps representing all Reserves, who become part of the Canadian Parliament. These First Nation Reps would be voted in by the First Nations People.
@Thomas_Oklahoma
@Thomas_Oklahoma 11 лет назад
Today, with “The Indian Act” which is in existence since colonization, the land, resources, laws and money is managed (for the most part) by the “Canadian Aboriginal Affairs” under the Canadian Government. This Act created the abusive Residential Schools too and other numerous Human Rights violation. New Acts or Laws need to be created giving “Sovereignty” to First Nations. Hundreds of billions of dollars of resource revenue was mismanaged by the Canadian Government.

Every single chief should get a $75000 flat and that's it. Why should our society be ok to giving tax dollars based on family chief succession.
@SnafuVCI
@SnafuVCI 11 лет назад
I would much rather there were NO reserves and Aboriginal people received tax breaks, and additional incentives for education, healthcare, and family benefits. I think this would lead Aboriginal people down a much healthier path to healing and self-empowerment. Not to say there wouldn't be tribal communities still, but an independence, and sense of self worth within that construct.

You have taught me to state the facts and ignore some comments instead of being an idiot and reacting like a racist nut with my ignorant comments. Name calling and insults is easy, I do it to whites or whatever, it's a youtube mentality that I must change. You make a difference, I will try the same. Thing is I can't get 1 Aboriginal ( except you) on these issues to even debate fairly without the blame game coming out. Management of any resource requires controls and vision. First Nations have proven to this point that they cannot do that. My grandmother was miq mau and her forefathers fended on their own without treaty money. If FN wants to manage their own destiny they should either meld into society or collect and survive on their own taxes just like the rest of us. I worked for 40 years without ever drawing any form of assistance from government or whining about the democractic system.

No, I do not see this as a welfare situation. If you want to look at it in another situation, look at it as support or payment for the lands taken over by the white man and payment made are a "mortgage" being paid to FN. However, where is the end date on this "mortgage"? In addition, the government gives the taxation money to your counsels for them to distribute and they are doing a lousy job of that! That system must come to an end.

So.....here are the facts. No money that goes to first nations in canada comes from tax payers money...not even the taxes that over 60% of us off reserve first nations pay. By the way...I am off reserve and I pay the same amount of taxes that non-first nations pay. For the past 150 years the money has been going into a trust fund for first nations. This money is ours, and in fact, if you do your homework, the canadian government has been putting our money into general revenue.

Hey if we had a balanced budget I wouldn't mind handing over 100's of millions to the natives who are having a tough time coping with life. But we are not even providing proper medical care to any of the people of Canada...white or native or otherwise. If you ran this country like a business...first thing you would do is redirect the money that is wasted on these reserves and pour it into our struggling medical system. That way the entire population of Canada benefits.

They had a rich culture it is just hard to see because they were a hunting and gathering society. The wheel was never invented because it would have been useless for their culture. I do understand the salary is overrated for a small town of 1,529 in comparison to a non reserve town. The contracts awarded mentioned in the film, 51 mio and 18 mio, are contracts awarded to private companies. Maybe the CEO makes a sh** load of money. It doesn't mean the local people of Attawapiskat profit from the size of the contracts directly. Also, over how many years is the contract awarded for? Is it the total sum over mre years. All I am saying, is the report is vague and incomplete.

Poor journalism is what perpetuates the misunderstanding between the main stream population and Aboriginal people of Canada. Shame on the Sun News Network.... What about this historical statement made by the Minister of Indian Affairs from 1913 - 1932. "It is readily acknowledged that Indian Children lose their natural resistance to illness by habituating so closely in the residential schools and that they die at a much higher rate than in their villages. But this does not justify a change in the policy of this department which is geared toward a final solution of our Indian problem."

Racism 1. the belief that races have distinctive cultural characteristics determined by hereditary factors and that this endows some races with an intrinsic superiority over others Just because ancestors colonised a part of earth before another makes all those who came later inferior and have to sacrifice their resources to compensate for actions committed by them to them back then. Talk about racism that's racism IMO.

Ask your Chief and Council for a copy of the Federal Transfer Agreement (FTA). Whatever First Nation you are from, you are entitled to a copy. If they do not give you a copy write a letter to the Chief & Council and cc their funding source, also keep a copy. You may have to write this letter for 3 months, if you do it is preferable to write the letter on or after the same date as the first letter you sent. If by the fourth month on the same day you do not receive a copy of the then send a letter to their funding source and cc the Chief and Council. The funding party will send you a copy. You also have a right to anything that is in your name, i.e. any cheques that were made in your name within the fiscal year unless you ask for other years, you can also ask for expenditures on improvements on your home if it is registered in your name, etc. Hope this helps.

I'm a firm believer that all races, cultures, ethnicity (or whatever) created their own unique Inventions, tribes, cultures and civilizations in the past. Western Civilizations is a combination of all societies that paved away for us all. Most Euro settlers and traders before colonization traded and exchanged ideas with the Natives that benefited both sides. But, it was Eurocentric Government that dictated the masses though military campaigns in order to benefit the "White Establishment".
@Thomas_Oklahoma
@Thomas_Oklahoma 11 лет назад
Everyone built Canada and the Natives of North America had given the 2nd most contributions to Canada and the United States. North America gained vast knowledge from the Natives and made trillions in the areas of plant genetics, crops, medicines, resources, land, metallurgy, influence on democracies etc. Today, Natives have contributed in the areas of business development, labor, technology, donating, tax paying, science etc.

So, do you want to disband the Indigenous people's sovereignty? Do you want to get rid of the Reserves? And who get the land of the Reserves? Do the Corporations get the land, or does the rich white land owners? Well, it isn't your choice and this issue does not revolve around your opinions. like it or not, Natives have been a collection of Nations and will remain a collection of Nations today.
@Thomas_Oklahoma
@Thomas_Oklahoma 11 лет назад
Like it or not, Tribes are Nations that where here before colonization. "self-government within a country governed by elected representation"??? How did you arrive to that conclusion? Changing and updating the over 100 year old outdated "Indian Act" and giving sovereignty to the First Nation isn't going to violate your personal liberties. And stop dancing around the issue of Sovereignty and changing the subject. . Stop crying around about money, I can see you value money over people.
@Thomas_Oklahoma
@Thomas_Oklahoma 11 лет назад
With land and resources freed up on allotted lands, Entrepreneurship will develop creating businesses, jobs and economic development. Tribes should be allowed to negotiate their own trade agreements internationally as long as they don‘t violate Federal and International Laws. People will create their own “Private Organizations” to assist people in need, which will limit the need for Government funding. The private sector would be taxed by the Tribe and the Feds.
@Thomas_Oklahoma
@Thomas_Oklahoma 11 лет назад
Each Reserve can go back to traditional values of individual responsibility while contributing to and being part of a community oriented society. Family values and giving are a huge part of Native Heritage of North America. Before colonization, Nations operated by local or regional Governments with most being democratic. Natives never had a bloated central Government. Free trade (barter system) allowed products and resources to be distributed creating stable societies.
@Thomas_Oklahoma
@Thomas_Oklahoma 11 лет назад
Local laws need to be governed by the Tribal Government. Each Tribal Gov and people from each Reserve together can create their own Constitution which will hold each other accountable. Elections need to be handled locally free of Federal dictatorship. Divide the land by “Allotted Land” (Individual Owner Ship) and in Common (for the traditionalist living off the land) with some land owned by the Tribe for parks, gaming, recreation, Government buildings, museums etc.
@Thomas_Oklahoma
@Thomas_Oklahoma 11 лет назад
The key lies in the Government policies. Change the system and give sovereignty to the First Nations. As a sovereign Nation, the private sector in every FN will have to pay taxes to the Feds, but don't pay taxes to the Providences because both the providences and Reserves are sovereign entities free from Federal dictatorships. The Reserves will have to follow Federal Laws and International Laws just like the Providences do.
@Thomas_Oklahoma
@Thomas_Oklahoma 11 лет назад
FN don't have sovereignty like the tribal nations in the USA and government policies has destroyed communities that’s the major reason that 50% of the Natives in Canada are struggling. In the USA the Native economy is growing faster than anyone else because we have sovereignty...Why is it so difficult for you to understand that? You want the Natives in Canada to be individuals in a Eurocentric society and want their tribal societies destroyed.
@Thomas_Oklahoma
@Thomas_Oklahoma 11 лет назад
In 1876, the Indian Act gave the government control of Indian economic and resource development and land use. They became what Calla calls “wards of Canada,” which didn't allow them to engage in economic development. That’s why the FN is demanding action for sovereignty. For well over 100 years the Canadian Government has oppressed and mismanaged Native, treaty money and resources…Natives need sovereignty, but you only see the Natives has “Welfare recipients”

I use “Ancient Native American Farming Techniques” - I plant crops (that are condensed together) on rolls of mounds with small ditches dug between every other roll of mound. I use an ancient soil rotation (preserving soil and space) I built an irrigation system bringing in water from a near by river. I move my farm and ranch around every few years to save soil and protect against erosion.

I know hard work and self-sufficiency...It's obvious that you haven’t been paying attention to Native American issues with the Federal Government, rather they be in the United States or Canada, most tribes have always fight for sovereignty and do not want the Feds controlling their money, taxes, resources, local laws, regulation on businesses etc…What do you think all those riots and civil-rights movements where all about, welfare? Nope, it was about sovereignty.

The Indian Act First Nations tax exemption is very narrow and applies only to personal property and income located on a reserve. Natives pay all other taxes not covered by the narrow exemption. The tax exemption only involves about 272,000 Native people when you subtract the number of children aged 0-14 from the potential tax paying base. That number is actually even lower because a number of Natives have exchanged tax exemption for other benefits in self-governing Final Agreements.

Here in the States, most of the Tribal Nations have a growing GDP because the Tribe and People manage their own lands and resources while developing businesses and products...The Natives in the States have the fasting growing population and economy in the United States and are now the second wealthiest Minority behind Asians...Native American Net Worth is well over 70 billion and Natives pay tens of millions in taxes...Natives here donate at a higher rate than any other people in America.

We? You are most likely a small tax payer just like me..I operate a small organic farm and hire day labors for harvest...I also operate vendors selling Native American art and crops...You need get over yourself. You are misunderstanding me, I do not want the Canadian Government controlling and dictating the resources, taxes collected from businesses and treaty money...Tribes can manage their own lives and this will lead to better communities...Central Governments cannot manage people.

Recalling the views of the Supreme Court, if First Nations land can be eroded through tax policy, it is an efficient way to end communal land ownership in Canada. Once that is accomplished, First Nations can be fully assimilated into the mainstream and any resources on or near their lands can be exploited without the inconvenience of consultation or compensation. Complaining about tax policy is only one of many ways in which the right wing in Canada is seeking to achieve that goal.

Taxes pay for public services like roads and water, and First Nations communities are notoriously under-serviced. A 2005 study by the Assembly of First Nations found that, per capita federal funding for First Nations citizens is $7,200. That’s far lower than the amount that the government spends on the population in general. In Ottawa, for instance, the combined per capita spending by all three levels of government totalled $14,900, more than double the amount being spent on-reserve.

More to the point, the tax exemption in no way compensates for shortfalls in funding to First Nations. The provinces spend more than 20 percent more on children than the federal government does on First Nations children, whether those kids are in school or under child welfare services care. The disadvantage to First Nations children from these two policies alone amounts to far more than the foregone tax revenues, and there are dozens of other examples.

For example if First Nation students attend “public schools” they have to pay “tuition”. First Nations pay for all their programs and services out of their allocated budgets and at a higher cost than other Canadians. (most programs are subsidized and First Nations do not qualify for those subsidies) Yet First Nations are funded at a far lower level than other Canadians for those same services.
@Thomas_Oklahoma

First Nations pay for ALL their own programs and services from the money “Held In Trust” by Canada. TAXES pay for Canadian programs and services. First Nations don't pay those taxes that provide programs and services to other Canadians. If a First Nations member lives or works off the First Nation they are taxed in the same manner as every other Canadian resident. None of those taxes benefit the First Nations communities even if the worker lives on a First Nation.
@Thomas_Oklahoma
@Thomas_Oklahoma 11 лет назад
First Nations, don't receive any kind of compensation from Canada. First Nation signed treaties with Canada. The treaties define the PAYMENT for acquiring lands by Canada. MONETARY SETTLEMENTS were made, and that money is “Held In Trust” by Canada. Canada holds First Nations LANDS “In Trust” and collects royalties from RESOURCES on First Nations lands which Canada also holds “In Trust”.
@Thomas_Oklahoma
@Thomas_Oklahoma 11 лет назад
I think you meant to say "Northern Development Canada” manages the resources and lands of First Nations, including land and subsurface leases and resource royalties and puts funds in a account for First Nations for funding for the Reserves", but yeah, the Canadian Government mismanages the revenue created on the Reserves of First Nation's resources.

Canada needs equal representation of all, Canadian voters generally vote in a party to be in power. The party with the most reps voted in the parliament is given government authority. It will always be a one-sided Political bias in the Government with only one party. What Canada needs is a multiple 3rd parties in the Canadian Parliament.

Stone Age means lack of metal usage...Natives in North America were in the copper age for over 6,000 years and in the iron age for over thousand years…In Mesoamerica was in the bronze and alloy age for over a thousand years…In South America, the Natives were in the bronze, iron and alloy age for over 3,000 years.
@Thomas_Oklahoma

In addition some First Nations have "Band Moneys" (from royalties derived from reserve lands) and some First Nations have "Taxation" dollars that Canada "Holds in Trust". Canada dictates the expenditures of that money on a per-capita and formula basis and provides the First Nations with the guidelines and the audit procedures on how they can spend their own money.

Many First Nations citizens see their tax-exempt status as a function of the treaties and other legal arrangements with the Crown, or as partial compensation for the resources taken from the lands. They believe that imposing an income tax would be not only unfair, but unconstitutional.

The balance of advantage is clear when the tax exemption is compared to the lack of services on-reserve. To whom is the system unfair when the numbers are so grossly tilted the other way?
@Thomas_Oklahoma

Since First Nations don't pay for Non-Native programs and services, if First Nations use any "Public Service" that service must be contracted as a PURCHASE OF SERVICE.

When did this become your land? When and from whom did you get it? I was under the understanding that the land was to be shared with all, was this done 100 years ago? Do we know where this started? It was not so peacefull back 200 or 300 years ago, we cannot say land was not fought over back then as well. I am not saying it was right in what was done, but for how many generations do people pay for things done in the past when it was not done to the current group.

Further to that. a Canadian can be of any background, Chinese, Japanese, African, Arab. etc. etc. Those groups melded into Canadian society and contributed. I rest my case.

Whether the content of this video is true or not, monies should have a clear trace because they are tax dollars. If the gov is fulfilling financial obligations, Canadian are entitled to see evidence of it in the fulfillment of the needs they are intended to support. People who have nothing to hide will hide nothing. Why not show where monies are distributed to ALL Canadians. I not surprised and accusations re misappropriation of funds but I am surprised that financial matters are not kept above board even if it is only to avoid these accusations in the first place.
