Thanks, Jason. I had my first activation and I agree that it’s quite a rush. Mine started with uncertainty, as I had a cobbled antenna solution. Getting the first ten was a huge relief. It turns out my antenna was pretty decent, I worked Alaska on 20W phone. Wrapped up with 35 contacts. I’m hooked!

As usual, great video. Thanks for the activation. A couple suggestions. Print off a set of POTA logsheets from the Files section on the Facebook POTA page and use a clipboard. Much easier to write on. Personally, I do all my POTA logging on paper and enter it into the computer afterwards. Then I file the paper in case something blows up. Get a headset, the Yamaha CM-500 is inexpensive and works great with most radios. Also, get a footswitch. Those two will keep your hands free for logging. You can use a 'Y' cable to feed both the headset and an external speaker. I know these add items to your kit, but the improved experience is well worth it. I learn something new and make changes with every activation. Keep it up, hope to see you on the bands. 73, Michael WA7SKG

Jason, now your hooked!!! I hope to work you sometime on POTA!!! I have only activated one park here in WV, but I plan to activate others. I made 13 contacts in about 35 minutes on my first activation in September 2019, only using a random wire antenna and my uBitx on a 12v 7amp/h SLA battery. I started out using the FT-817ND but was having a rough time being heard, that is when I moved up to the uBitx. One day I hope to get a FT-891 that way if I wanted I would have the 100 watt capability, but I do like running QRP, more challenging. I am hoping to get out real soon so I can try my homemade WRC clone antenna that I built. I have already tested it, videos on my channel and it seems to work as it should. But, mostly I am the hunter looking for parks and I hope to hear you sometime!! POTA is a lot of fun. Juddie WD8WV

Nice work! I started POTA at the beginning of the year thanks to K8MDR & KB9VBR. I love doing POTA! I’ve been going out every weekend since the beginning of the year and haven’t stopped yet (good thing I’ve been able to). KM4ACK - Thank you for the reply. My problems are really more basic. I can’t figure out how to connect the 857D to the SIGNALINK and PI4. I know the SIGNALINK connects to the PI4 with USB and to the 857D data port... but don’t I need to connect to the CAT port on the 857D as well? I’ve searched high and low and cannot find a definitive answer.
@KM4ACK
@KM4ACK 4 года назад
Yes. You need a cable between the 857 & Signalink. Then Signalink to Pi. You also need a CAT cable between the 857 & the Pi. There are 2 round 6 pin mini Din connectors on the back of the radio. The one marked data goes to the signalink and the one marked CAT goes direct to the pi. Look at the sticker on the bottom of the radio to figure out which port is which. 73, de KM4ACK

I recently returned to ham radio after a 20-year break and find that nothing bugs me more than hearing "QSL" used on phone. This seems to be a recent innovation which never used to happen. We were always taught that using Q-signals on phone is bad form because they were created as CW shortcuts important in CW message handling where ops did not speak the same language. The standard handoff on phone is supposed to be "over." The standard acknowledgment "roger." You may also hand off by asking "copy?" with the reply again being "roger" if you were received. Not sure when all this changed, but the old ham in me finds it irritating. Don't get me started on useless signal reports where everybody is 5-9 regardless.
