Farsi is such a visceral and utterly romantic language. Until i fell in love with an iranian i could not comprehend the vast world of art that i was missing entirely through this language and culture. Farsi is the most romantic and beautiful language in the world.

Rumi is a Persian poet who lived during 1207-1273AD The singer is Shajarian (junior). Rumi's poetry is universal and I know Madonna loves it, just like millions of others across the planet. Rumi's poetry is so universal that it crosses time, cultures, languages ... It does not matter what is your language, culture, as long as you are a human being Rumi's pottery will speak to your soul. Try it and you might be surprised :) BTW, this poem was Rumi's poem about his love of God and he speaks to God. The double meaning is that this could be a poem between two human beings. So, when God asked him to leave all friends and loved one , it was so Rumi could devote all of his attention to God. This was not meant as one lover asks another person to leave all friends and family for another person, it is about a much higher level of love. This also, could be the type of love that a person (let's say a scientist) may find in science that requires that person to devote all attention so he/she can find a scientific cure for something that pains mankind. There are all kinds of love. Think of love in this example as the universal love.

As a proud Iranian Armenian, I’m eternally blessed for being fluent in Farsi. I often wish for my American Armenian husband to understand the sublime elements of this endlessly poetic language. Luckily, I can translate the poem to him in Armenian. Otherwise, if I had to rely on the English language, the entire attempt with be hollowed out. At the very least, in Armenian, I can convey the depths of the words to him. Furthermore, in the section where Rumi claims that he would abandon his family & friends, both my husband and I immediately recognized that Rumi is speaking to God. It's inconceivable in both of our cultures to exist without our parental units or without our community and friends. This is a declaration of a divine love. After the Armenian Genocide, several hundred thousand Armenians took refuge in Iran and each one of us was welcomed with great admiration for one another. This act of humanity from the Iranian people, allowed our families to not only find a safe haven, but to live amongst the most generous and loving people on earth. Sincere love for my HAMVATANS & a low bow 🇦🇲❤️🇮🇷🙏

You should be my friend. We Persians have contributed so much to society for thousands of years. Our language and poetry is beyond explanation. We are loving people who cherish our guests . When I come to iran , people treat me with suck kindness . No one bothers me a lot my clothes , I walk around with no scarf and no one says a word not even the police . My cousin was driving my car and speeding . We got stopped . My cousin hasn’t brought his drivers license with him !!!! I was laughing so hard … I showed the gentleman my California license and he said “ oh my god you live in California “!! As if he wished I could take him with me. My eyes were full of tears !!! I jokingly said “ do you want to come with me “! He looked so sad .. he said : I wish , but I still have to serve another year ! He let us go without a ticket . My other cousin and I were driving from Tabriz to Tehran . I asked her to stop and buy a melon from a man who was obviously very poor. I never bought things from stores . Always from street sellers . We found a place with water and was about to eat our melon when an entire Turkish speaking family stopped . They brought the most gorgeous food and offered all of it to us . I still have a video of them . I love my homeland . I wouldn’t give a single drop of its soul for the whole world!

Great reaction and comments Matt. The Persian language has evolved over thousands of years to serve as the backbone of Persian music and philosophy. It has the means to deliver melodies and convey complex metaphors at the same time. Rumi used both features in the best way possible. I don't mean to nag nor brag, but most Persian poems lose much of meaning and taste when translated to other languages, especially English.

Love in Iranian and Islamic 'Hekmat' and 'Erfan' is a vast term consists of different levels and kinds. Molavi in his books especially 'Masnavi' talks about all different levels and different kinds of love. From earthly love (Man & Women) to Heavenly love. And Eventually the love for God. Sometimes the levels are so wonderfully mixed in his books that you can not tell the difference. That is the superb characteristic of Erfan.

@@sarf7195 very true . do you read them in Farsi? because when one gets to read and know him and his thoughts and words ,if it connects with him , it is as if this person finds himself in a totally different world . if you can read in Farsi then you know that the language used in poetry from Hafez or Attar or Omar khayyam are very much different from that of Molavi , they are very different from the everyday used Farsi , but Molavis Peoms are most as if he is merely speaking without meaning to write poems . you can speak them and they will still make sense .of course he has his own kind of very complicated use of language which you can NOT understand without a knowledge of it ,having read a book on the subbjet even as a native speaker . what you pointed at is because of his very simple style and choose of words ,sometimes it makes you wonder is he still talking about GOD? and this is one of many aspects that makes him such a beautiful Person . i dont think one out of millions who dive deeply into his world and claim to know it have really grasped it all .

The word "Love "in Rumi's poems has a different meaning with what we consider love ,these days. It was part of their worship to God. Also being drunk was metaphor of being obsessed or possessed by God. The partner itself is not a physical partner or spouse, its the attention Rumi got from God. He had to create metaphors to make his deep concepts understanding .

Rumi’s poems reflect love to God. But then this human emotion can be to our kids, our parents, a friend, a lover, our partner, our pet. Love is love and Rumi is interpreting the meaning of it even though he meant love of God. Rumi’s poems just pierce into your heart and as he wished his poems to be put into music and dance it just takes you into another realm.

A lot of times the love expressed in such Persian/Iranian poetry is not directed at a human beloved but rather to a realization of the Source, the Spirit, the Creator. hence the intensity of expression of that love and the seemingly “unfair” Renunciation of family and friends after such realization or growth. Its actually simbolic. This song is not about love between humans. Its about love between human and god. Basically that part was talking about cutting ties with attachments of materialistic life and stop being controlled by it. Instead devote ourselves to understanding god, loving his creations and improving ourselves. Because if our character dont grow then we can not wistand love of god

There is a difference between eastern and western music in the way we treat the category of "love". In the East, especially when it comes to mysticism and love in this situation, the beloved is always in the utmost development and perfection. Oftentimes it is God Himself and sometimes humans have attained the utmost perfection as human beings. They have given up their positions, their seats, their possessions, their names and their slogans and they want everything for others and for their people. This Rumi poem is the translation of such love. This point should be noted. I think you came very close to that understanding. Thank you for your review and your charm of this music.

Yes unfortunately pain and years and years of censorship! We are talking of centuries of censorship. And I think the “partner “ here is not in human form, its more like a higher power and you have to seek it within you and if necessary to go on a journey alone to find yourself! Like other mystic and Sufi poets of Persian literature, Rumi's poetry speaks of love which infuses the world. It would be very difficult to explain the concept to Americans lol!
