"This album is a beautiful mess". That was a perfect way to describe it! It is eclectic, at times weird, to be sure, but it's also got some all-time classics on it! The Beatles were fearless, and they also knew how to poke fun at themselves and everyone else, besides! They wanted to get away, it appears, from the artifice of the "Sgt. Peppers"-mode of production and just strip it all down and do some crazy songs. The White album is not my favorite Beatles album but that doesn't mean it doesn't still have some of the greatest tunes of their catalog!

The “wooo ooo oooos” in Back in the USSR reference bands like The Beach Boys. Who had a California surf sound. (If you look up there song “I Get Around” you’ll see what I mean). But the Beatles added some irony to it and made it about Communist USSR instead of the USA.

Your ears aren’t wrong: It feels disjointed because there was very little collaboration on this album. More double tracking of individual singers’s voices than the Beatles usual three-part harmonies. They were doing their own things in the studio, and booking separate rooms just to get music recorded. They really gave their all to make a good album for Abbey Road, but there are some gems here. And a side note that I’m sure others will tell you: Eric Clapton plays the lead guitar solo in While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

With regard to Bungalo Bill, it was based off a real person they met while they were staying with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in India. They were on a meditation retreat and feeling very connected to the world and nature, and there was this British dude Bill who also happened to be staying there on a meditation retreat. Bill had brought his hunting equipment as he also wanted to combine his meditation trip with a hunting trip, and he ended up killing a tiger. He came back and tried to brag about it to the Yogi and the beatles but they ended up just very disappointed in him. They wrote that song about Bill, who years later after hearing the song about him, rethought his hunting and decided it was not right what he had done. There is a great documentary called Meeting the Beatles in India which I highly recommend for some context about the White Album, which they wrote during and right after their trip to India. The documentary is on one of the streaming services, I forget.

The reason some people say The White Album is trash is because it’s the most disjointed of their albums. With albums like Abbey Road, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper’s the whole thing flows together very well. In the White Album it’s verrrry long and the songs don’t really flow well together. HOWEVER since it is so long, it has the highest quantity of bangers out of any Beatles album imo. I'm glad that 'Julia' touched you as much as it did! It was about John's mom, who was hit by a car and killed when he was just 18. His uncle George Smith and Aunt Mimi raised him after they got custody from John's mom and father. George Smith passed away when John was 15. John's father left him when he was a kid. George Smith taught John how to read, draw and paint, and bought him his first mouth organ. Julia was also into music and played a ukelele. So John had a rough childhood, was a violent youth, and a bully in school. He was able to convert that energy into creative song writing.

And yes, Paul wrote ‘Blackbird’ about civil rights (you sensed that.) Crazy how powerful his voice, guitar and toe tap can be. ‘Martha’ was Paul’s dog (love that song) and ‘Guitar Gently Weeps’ is one of the best songs ever. Period. Part of the beauty (for me) is Paul going from ‘Why Don’t We Do It in the Road’ to ‘I Will’ (back to back.) Legends only! 🫶🏽

Fun fact about the White Album's sessions: About halfway through the recording sessions Ringo quit the Beatles after recieving too many directions from the rest of the group. Ringo and his family flew to Greece for a vacation. While in Greece Ringo was stoned and wrote Octopus's Garden after learing about how octopi will pick up rocks and garbage and make it into their own little garden in the sand. Back in the studio, the rest of the Beatles recorded "Back in the USSR" and "Dear Prudence" without Ringo and had Paul on drums instead. They felt bad and realized they needed Ringo in the band, so they sent Ringo a telegram and convinced him to come back. When Ringo returned, he was greeted with boquets of flowers on his drum set.

Black bird was song of encouragement written by Paul to the American black women. A very British nickname for a woman is a bird. Remember, there were protests on multiple fronts during the sixties. Hippies protesting the Vietnam War, women marching for equal rights in the Women's Liberation movement, and blacks marching for the Civil Rights movement. The leaders of the civil rights were mostly black men and women's liberation were dominated by white women. Paul said he was watching the news and saw all these beautiful blackbirds in the background and wanted to encourage them that it was their time too to be spreading their wings to shine.

@@JJJJJVVVVVLLLLL I like the saying, it means whatever you think it means to you. Sometimes you hear an artist say what a song is about years after you have already decided what it means and you think, that's not right. 😆. Maybe he was inspired by a black woman in the news and decided to write a song, but then the song writing process turned it into what it became. I just don't think he's one that would make it all up to try to appear righteous somehow. Or another idea is that human memory becomes very flawed over time. Some news clip he saw of a civil rights march might have been overdubbed with the song and his mind merged the clip as his original inspiration. Anyway, it's a nice song.

@@JJJJJVVVVVLLLLL Well, now, "he's lying... pure bullshit" you assert, which strikes me as arrogant, abusive, and ignorant. Since you're certain of so much, you can explain to us why, when the song was newborn back in *1968,* Paul told Donovan at Abbey Road that he did mean the blackbird to symbolise a black woman and that he was inspired to write it after reading about American race riots. This is in a taped conversation during the Mary Hopkin 'Postcard' sessions that you can easily find on RU-vid. Note that Paul demo'd Blackbird for the Beatles at Esher on May 29 1968, only a few weeks after Martin Luther King was shot. Does any of that mean it is solely and literally "about" black activism? No, no more than it is literally and solely about the common blackbird (turdus merula). It isn't politics or ornithology. It's a poetical *metaphor*. As Paul said, "it's a bit more symbolic than that", or as you yourself suggest, it is "broad and universal". Yes. A poetic metaphor typically has superposed meanings, but one of the meanings - and a seminal one for the author, as Paul proveably confirmed back in 1968 - was US civil rights abuses.

just some lore n stuff incase you didn't know 👍👍👍 Bungalow Bill was about an actual guy they knew in India who would go out hunting n stuff, the song was made to make fun of him, I forget the exact terminology but for that tracks chorus they got everyone in the room to do a group vocal too which is kinda fun Martha My Dear is about Paul's dog whose name is Martha Blackbird IS about the Civil Rights Movements, during the Beatlemania era they also refused to play to segregated crowds which was pretty progressive for the time Don't Pass Me By was the first song Ringo ever wrote so even though it's not one of the best it has a novelty I can respect Why Don't We Do It In The Road was inspired by Paul seeing two monkeys have sex in India and being "inspired" by how free they were Julia is about John's dead mother, when he says "ocean child" in the song it's referencing Yoko, her name translates to 'ocean child'

I grew up on the Beatles - saw them on Ed Sullivan at age 4. My 7 older sibs brought in all the music of the 60’s. Can’t tell you how fortunate I was. I always loved White Album because it’s the first time you really heard the guys as individuals and each one was badass. George was always around but I got to know him with this album. Glorious experience.

I don't know how to express my joy over this reaction of yours! It's so damn honest and heartfelt and spontaneous that I get all warm inside. Here I am, a guy from Sweden, probably twice as old as you, who first listened to this album back in 1975 (it was the first Beatles album that i bought, recommended by my music teacher) and I had close to exact the same reaction to it, as you, nearly 50 years later!!! Amazing!! But Beatles are amazing!! Peace and love, man!!

Eric Clapton played the lead on while my guitar gently weeps. One thing about this album, is that the Beatles were obligated to produce a certain number of songs over a certain number of months. They put this album together to fulfill that, even though it was mostly a bunch of individual projects. This was the first album that showed that the Beatles were splitting up. even the Abbey Road medley helped to fulfill that. After that, they were more or less free of their contract. By the way, Blackbird was written for the civil rights movement at the time. A bird is a woman in English vernacular. Paul was thinking about a black woman finally being free.

George has one of the hardest Beatles songs of all time with ITS ALL TOO MUCH from Yellow Submarine. Yeah George had A+ songs for the most part and he has the best solo album. All Things Must Pass is a masterpiece. A backlog of songs played by his friends who happen to be world class musicians and produced by a guy addicted to everything and a wall of sound. The jam side may be a gateway drug to phish or king gizzard and the lizard wizard.

Ringo very briefly quit the band and the drumming on Back in the USSR is Paul. The song is a play on the Beach Boys California Girls, continuing Paul's playful back and forth with Brian Wilson. Martha My Dear haunts me in a deep way even though I know full well it is about Paul's sheepdog Martha. (I'm guessing the "look what you've done" part is about her peeing on the rug)

Oh, that was classic! Your interspliced video of the "Her Majesty" reaction was so funny! Thank you for covering that and you gotta love that the Beatles threw that in after the "glory" of "The End" because it just shows their sense of humor and that they never, ever take themselves too seriously. I really enjoyed that, Darius! Bravo, lad!

To my ears, the “Woo-woo-wooing” part on Back In The U.S.S.R” was the just band tipping their hat to Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys…and the lyric structure itself behind the “woo-woo’s” references The Beach Boys’ “California Girls” as well. On the whole, I’ve always felt that hidden within the four vinyl sides of The White Album, is a truly epic single disc. With the rest of the tracks being just curious outtakes and studio joking around.

About "Gideon's Bible" in "Rocky Raccoon": In many hotel-rooms around the world, including a great many in the United States, the Bibles that you find in night-stand drawers were placed there by an organization called "the Gideons". The Gideons gave themselves the mission to distribute Bibles. You may also encounter the Gideons in person, handing out smaller, pocket-sized books, which combine the New Testament with the Book of Psalms. So, anyway, Rocky Raccoon was in rented lodging, and there he found a Bible placed by the Gideons.

You are so right to have a difficult time reacting to this album the first time out. It takes some digesting. I’m the youngest of seven and I was seven when this arrived under the Christmas tree in ‘68. It basically lands at the intersection of Aesop’s Fables and Grimms’ Fairy Tales.

Really enjoy watching your reactions to Beatles' songs. I'm 69 years old, a Beatles fan and musician. A few additions/corrections: (1) "Back in the USSR" is the Beatles paying homage to the style of beach boys songs; (2)In "while my guitar gently weeps" (agree, great song) the guitar solo is played by Eric Clapton; (3) "Blackbird" , confirmed by Paul, is a song offering encouragement to a black woman during the time of racial strife in 1960s America. Paul reaffirmed a few years ago: "This was really a song from me to a black woman, experiencing these problems in the States: 'Let me encourage you to keep trying, to keep your faith; there is hope. '" Take another look at some of the lyrics "you are only waiting for this moment to be free" and "take these broken wings and learn to fly." Also in England, the word "bird" is slang for a girl or woman.

But you're lucky you got to MISS Her Majesty. It was designed to be a surprise track that fans might miss the first few times they listened to the album, because it was not listed on the album cover and had sizeable silence after The End so you would think the album was over. That's how it should have been on the CDs too.

Darius, my hat is off to you for doing a reaction video to the White Album. Musically, this album is all over the road and is totally disjointed. But that’s what makes it stand apart from most Beatles albums that were the epitome of cohesion. The White Album has some classic music that gets lost in the confusion of the album. And for many of us that’s the special appeal of this album. I will say it’s tough listening through all the edits of these songs when I’m used to hearing them all the way through
