20:28-20:42 might be the shittest beat drop of all time. Like I legitimately cannot imagine what they were thinking in the studio when they made this. It's baffling. I can't stop laughing at it
yeah that long build up is completely unnecessary, especially when they did better beat switch ups on songs like Imma be, Dirty Bit and Just can't get enough. The worst song by far is play it loud as it's so boring.
I don't know man, Pump It used to show up all the time at college parties a few years ago and, personally, I think Don't Phunk With My Heart is a great addition to any early 00s nostalgia playlist. Their late 00s and early 10s era is absolutely full of dated pseudo-edm puke that made them feel like a joke (and their whole digital raver aesthetic is so tacky and cringe nowadays), but I feel like their earlier stuff is worth being remembered
@@SuperDarq64 I think I get what you mean. I'm not really a fan of them necessarily, but I occasionally enjoy them a bit, but it's kind of like you said, just in the context of the time they were prominent. It's definitely more nostalgia to me than listening because they're good, because they really are average at best, and kind of trash as worst lol
I feel like this era of Black Eyed Peas will be remembered with nostalgia for my generation, but our kids will be like "WTF who would ever enjoy this?" Kind of like a lot of music my parents liked in the 80s.
Some of the widely listened to music from the 80s was good, but much of the music that was highly consumed back then is not really talked about fondly anymore by people who don’t have nostalgia for it.
@@XMirrorJoe Obviously any era has great music. I don't mean all 80s music. But watch one of those 80s music video tv shows and 90% of it is throwaway garbage that nobody remembers except for people who grew up with it. A lot of hair metal and super dated synth pop that sounds like they're all trying to sound exactly the same. That's basically what I'm saying the Black Eyed Peas will be.
I don't get any nostalgia from this whatsoever. I remember seeing will.i.am as an insufferable tool and my view of him remains the same. Such a deeply unlikeable 'musician' that got involved with the odd decent track, a maximum of one of those featured on this album. I won't hold back when I tell my kids about these, they were fucking awful to listen to.
The "Do It Like This" Build and Drop from 20:30 to 20:52 legit is like what would happen if a DJ at a club or festival troll the audience by having a fake build up lmao.
dirty bit is a major guilty pleasure and I still generally like just can't get enough, never bothered to listen to the rest of the album and I think I made the right decision on that front lol
I used to be obsessed with Black Eyed Peas and Dirty Bit when I was 9. I had zero quality control as a kid lmao. Anything with a "cool electronic sound" automatically = good. Thankfully the good electronic music that I listened to such as TCM and Prodigy stuck around, while Black Eyed Peas was mostly left behind. The E.N.D. does have some guilty pleasures in there for nostalgia's sake though.
I haven't finished watching this video yet, but yeah, I wonder how off-put Brad would be by that album's weaker elements. I think that Fergie probably deserved stronger material than what she got. I think her voice could command better crafted lyrics overall, and the production on songs like London Bridge can be very grating, even though I like that song about 60-70% of the time. But I personally enjoy the album overall even though I think it's just okay from a critical perspective. I still listen to Pedestal pretty often tbh.
The first time I heard the entirety of The Time (Dirty Bit) was on the way to prom. I was so distracted! It was shocking. I didn’t realize how twisted up my face was until my date asked me if I was ok. It legit put me in a bad mood and as a bonus it absolutely refused to end. Just kept going to make sure it out stayed its welcome. I Got A Feeling, for all it’s flaws, was the solid soundtrack to so many good moments and I think that’s a huge part of why it’s so fondly remembered. I also think The Time was aiming to be the same type of hit, but it’s a record scratch that disrupts fun moments instead of underscoring them.
This was the first album I remember people hating. Hearing the older kids at school laughing at it, my parents turning the station every-time a song came on, even my younger “cooler” teachers talking about how terrible it was. As stupid as it sounds I didn’t know music could be bad until this album, but then again I was like 9.
The amount of torture you’re willing to put yourself through for our entertainment is amazing. Love you Chad Taste in Music. I’m wanted in 18 states for stomping on kittens.
worst buildup ever in any song ever, the song gives you nothing to expect before it, the drop is terrible, other than the kick drum (which sounds awful) there's just one little horrible-sounding rising synth and it goes on for way too long. even i could make something better and that's saying something because i too suck at buildups but jesus christ
Just seen them in Galway Ireland in June 2022 and the trio were great and Don't Stop the Party was a magical moment everyone went crazy for it , they are good live songs to just dance and the beat switch ''baby don't you stop it'' with the lights was epic.
I fondly remember when i went to the "The E.N.D." Tour waaaay back in 2010, and enjoyed that album even though I was like 9 yo and then when The Beginning came out I begged to my mom for me to buy the CD and I believe that we only played like no more than 5 times skipping most of the tracks. That was my first time being disappointed with an album.
You know, your talk about the mixing really reminds how in the late 2000s and early 2010s, there was so much improper mixing when it comes to digital equipment, or DAWs, prob was a rough transition. Will.I.Am cites using a laptop for creating music once, and you know it's fine for on the go, but just that if you're gonna release? That's probably what settled the mixing of this album in occasions. I will say prob an interesting time capsule with production, ever since beats this time hit better right now.
I listened to this when I was younger and even had the CD. Watching this video It feels like I have never touched this album in my entire life. Nothing feels familiar in the slightest and whatever nostalgia I had deep down somewhere has been crushed.
Is anybody else gonna talk about how SNL did a Black Eyed Peas sketch like 10 days after Brad dropped his review of The E.N.D.? Definitely not suspicious.....total coincidence 😀
To say this is a product of its time is already giving it too much credit, because what everyone knows from it is Dirty Bit and I Just Cant Get Enough, and even then they're still mixed. Critics called Dirty Bit the worst song of the year when it came out, and this album is credited to killing the pop stardom of the Black Eyes Peas. The E.N.D. was a product of its time, The Beggining was rejected months after it was launched. It sucks.
Just cant get enough is for sure the best song on the album. I wish that song was put on their previous record, that would've been the right choice. It doesn't deserve to be on such a bad album.
Imo i think the key of awesome's parody of the black eyed peas (that is deleted because of them using don't stop believing) explained this era (and the E.N.D) of their music very well.
17:36 it is amazing that black eyed peas played one of the most basic, standard club beats possible, and EVERYONE instantly knows they're trying to copy party rock anthem lmao
Why did the 'pretentious impotent male who compensates for his lack of perceived masculinity by atacking things with his pretentious words on the internet like your stereotypical nerd' youtuber deleted my comment? He can criticize but not his viewers? He feels so powerful with his criticism yet is all so empty of value. And the cherry on top is the fact that he never made anything praiseworthy in the area he's so opinionated about. You can complain about video games and other things because you could never make one yourself, but what's stopping our music critic from producing a popular or acclaimed song?
I love how apl.de.ap said “Mirror, Mirror on the wall, who’s the baddest of them all??” Like it was the hardest shit ever and not paraphrasing a quote from a Disney villain
I loved Dirty Bit as a kid lmao. But yea it aged like shit. Sounds nowhere near as good as it did when I was 9. Love You Long Time gives me heavy Hopsin vibes and that's not a good thing. Just Can't Get Enough really surprised me by making me remember its existence, and bringing back memories as a kid hearing this on the radio. But I never realized it was a Black Eyed Peas song until watching this video. Weird. Overall the shit beats and out of nowhere gross lyrics are what truly ruin this album. At least The E.N.D. had some guilty pleasure bangers and one actually good song (I Got A Feeling), even if most of them aged like milk. This is a big yikes.
Hey brad, have you ever listened to “electric ladyland” by the Jimi Hendrix experience, it’s one of the most mine blowing albums of the 60’s and all time
As someone who enjoys most of this group’s discography in spite of its reception, I’m still scratching my head as to how they thought Love You Long Time was a good idea, especially since it’s not the first time one of their songs was criticized for being offensive. Fun fact: on the Xbox 360 dance game The Black Eyed Peas Experience, Love You Long Time is used as the character creation menu music. Out of all the songs featured in that game including their actual biggest hits, they go with THAT song for menu music.
off topic but now that you mentioned hyperpop in this, are there any starter/gateway hyperpop artists who could get a beginner like me into the genre? i don't know where to start, don't know quite what i'm looking for. i like 100gecs i guess, but my exposure to hyperpop were just youtube playlists and i'm pretty sure half of those were closer to glitchcore, which i'm not very into.
These are obvious suggestions, but SOPHIE's Oil of Every Pearl's Un-insides and Charli XCX's Pop 2 are great starting points. They're pretty much the album templates for the genre.
fullstop would recommend SOPHIE and any deconstructed club artist. hyperpop now is so broadly described that trap with pitched-up vocals can be considered “hyperpop” now.
Seconding SOPHIE, one of my favorite artists of all time. Kim Petras, Shygirl, Hannah Diamond, Dorian Electra (watch the music videos when you explore their stuff).
I remember listening to this album while playing minecraft back in the day. Gotta say I still have bad taste in music, but back then I don't think I had any taste lmao. Edit: Wtf I didn't remember this being THIS bad lmfaooooo.
I been a huge bep fan since their very start (dont know what that tells about me lol..) but this is the one record i cant really defend.. All their other projects have interesting and nice moments even though their albums differ greatly in quality.. For their best, listen to Masters of the Sun, behind the front or the END..
I listened to the Peas a TON in elementary school so I'm a pretty big Black Eyed Peas apologist due to nostalgia. I will defend Monkey Business and The END even tho they're corny and have bad lyrics. But this album is undefendable. Even eight year old me didn't care for most of the tracks and found it boring when it came out, and that's saying something considering I had zero taste back then.
Yeah, I remember having the exact same reaction to this as Brad is having here when I was 12. If you can’t even get your 12 year old hardcore fans on board then you’re doing something terribly wrong
That second last song was so good at least sonically (until the beat switch). I wonder what other albums/artists have that similar kind of sound (other than Ye's 808s and Heartbreak lol)
Hey Brad, I would absolutely love it if you were to react to the first album by Royal Blood (self titled). I love the band and I feel like you’d enjoy the music too
Ah that reminds me of high school dances and parties, I was a teen when that cd came out, it sucked back then and still sucks now, but it does still give me a bit of nostalgia
OMG THEIR OBSESSION WITH THAT LOVE YOU LONG TIME CLIP HAS BEEN DRIVING ME INSANE FOR YEARS!!! It's literally everywhere you look in the black eyed peas discography and it's so stupidddddddd!!!!
Hey Brad, This band called Shadow Academy just came out with their first album. It’s a decent album and it’s mostly rock focused and hey, one of the members is from Game Grumps, so that’s pretty weird lol. But, it would be pretty cool if you checked it out and I would love to see your thoughts on it, thanks!
if this album had production as good as just can't get enough it would be a decent trashy pop album that knows what it is, adjacent to early kesha with that level of nostaglia, where I never was really into it but it was omnispresent on the radio.
I hope you react to Masters Of The Sun, released like 10 years after this, bringing back to the Hip Hop they used to do after Fergie. It has many collaborations with good artist I consider it a decent album, I hope you give it a check
dumb request but i would really like it if you reviewed some of david bowie's albums. I feel like you've enjoyed almost everything you've heard from him, and i'd really like to hear your opinion on some of his most experimental albums (at the time), like Diamond Dogs, Station to Station, Low & Heroes. ty bradley
Brad, I just found your channel and am so glad this video exists. I'm ashamed to say that this was my favorite album for a period of time in middle school. I heard The Time (Dirty Bit) in a Kinect commercial or something and went to Best Buy to buy the cd. I unironically loved The Time (Dirty Bit), Love You Long Time, Together... and Xoxoxo was my favorite song on the album 😶 I havent listened to a single one of these songs in over a decade so excited to revisit them with someone who will give them the review they really deserve hahaha
