The lead singer of this incredible English music group was Freddie Mercury. His real name was Farrokh Bulsara, and he was born in Zanzibar in 1946...he and his Parsi-Indian parents fled the Zanzibar Revolution to England in 1964. Just thought you folks might be interested to know that.✌✌💯💯

A few fun facts about Queen: * Guitarist Brian May has a Ph.D. in Astrophysics and built his electric guitar (Red Special) when he was 17 (with his dad). * Bassist John Deacon has a degree in electronics. He designed and built the amp that Brian sometimes uses to create unique sounds on Red Special. John was also involved in the band’s financial management. * Drummer Roger Taylor has a degree in biology (pre-med). His vocal range is better than most lead singers of other groups. * Lead singer Freddie Mercury has a degree in graphic design. It goes without saying that his vocal range was amazing and he was the best front man of any band. * All four have written #1 hits, and all are members of the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

The Science is undeniable. By 1976, many countries were freed from British rule. I grew up around the Beltway when it came out and it was probably Casey Kasum (Shaggy) who told us on Amercian Top 40, how "Night at the Opera" almost didn't happen. David Bowie was also an amazing tour de force.

If you ever get headphones or earbuds, you need to listen to this song again, it is so musically and vocally complex. It is an iconic song by an iconic band. Queen never stuck to a single genre' so if you investigate their catalog, you will find everything from speed metal to songs of blues, jazz, vaudeville, and even songs that sound like lullabies. Their harmonies are unlike any other, Freddie Mercury's voice is considered to be the best in rock and among the best voices of all time. Both Roger (drums) and Brian (guitar) have outstanding voices as well and are also lead vocalists, but with Queen, they left most of it to Freddie. This band was together for 20 years until Freddie passed away in 1991 and have a catalog of 200 plus songs. All four members wrote songs and each of them had at least 3 number 1 hits and all have been inducted into the songwriter's hall of fame. The band has also been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame. All four members are college grads, Freddie with a degree in Design/Fashion/Advertising (he designed the Queen logo which still appears today on everything officially Queen), John (bass) an advanced degree in electronics (he built a special amplifier "The Deacy Amp" from junk he found in a dumpster. Brian still uses that amplifier to create alternative sounds from his guitar like strings, cello, horns and a few random other sounds. As of today, nobody has been able to recreate that amplifier though people have been trying to do so for 50 years. From what I understand, one company has nearly reproduced it), Roger (drums) a degree in Biology (he was in dental school when he had to quit because the band had become very popular and had an extensive tour schedule), and Brian (guitar) has a PhD in Astrophysics and currently does some work with NASA as well as continuing to tour with Roger as Queen + Adam Lambert. Brian built his own guitar with his dad when he was a teen, from junk they had laying around the house. He still uses that same guitar today, it is know as "The Red Special" sometimes fondly referred to as "The Old Lady" and also as "the Fireplace" because the body of the guitar was made from the wood of an old fireplace. Both Roger and Brian are in their 70s now and each have had/have successful solo music careers. Brian May was recently awarded the honor of the best rock guitarist and Queen was recently awarded the title of the best rock band of all time. Thank you for your reactions.

Queen is a British rock band that was formed in 1970 and was comprised of: Freddie Mercury - Lead vocals and piano Roger Taylor - Drummer and vocals Brian May - Lead guitar and vocals John Deacon - Bass guitar "Bohemian Rhapsody" released originally in 1975 is the creation of Freddie Mercury but he never told anyone what he was thinking when he wrote the lyrics. Freddie tended to write in metaphors so I would not suggest taking any of his songs literally. He wanted listeners to be able to apply to the song whatever meaning it had to them personally. Not what it meant to him. BTW - Freddie did admit that it was composed of three separate songs that he had been working on but could not seem to finish. So he decided to mash them together, adding some transitions and bridges, and created "Bohemian Rhapsody". "Bohemian Rhapsody" can be broken down into 6 parts: Part I is the "Into". The video image shows the four members of Queen singing and harmonizing the lyrics of the "Intro" in acapella. In reality, it is only Freddie's voice you hear on the recording. Freddie laid down 5 separate tracks of himself singing and harmonizing with himself. (FYI - multi-tracking and overdubbing runs rampant in Bohemian Rhapsody.) Next is the "Ballad" portion of the song ('Mama, just killed a man'). Freddie had worked on it for years but the song never had a name. The other members of Queen tentatively titled it "Freddie's Cowboy Song". The lyrist Tim Rice (who wrote the lyrics for "Jesus Christ, Superstar", "Evita", "Alladin", "The Lion King", ...) who was a close friend of Freddie's believes this portion of the song’s lyrics were about Mercury confessing to his fans that he was gay. The third section is the guitar solo. This is the only part of Bohemian Rhapsody not written by Freddie. Freddie told Brian that he wanted a guitar solo in the song and where he wanted it to fit into the song but left it to Brian to create. Brian wanted to have his guitar effectively sing a verse that would inject a different melody. He heard something in his head. He said that he could hear this melody and had no idea where it came from. That melody isn’t anywhere else in the song, but it’s on a familiar chord sequence, so it dovetails in quite nicely. The guitar solo leads to the fourth section is the "Operatic" section. Freddie not only loved Rock but he loved Opera. He was always fascinated with the idea of combining rock and opera. It took 3 weeks to record "Bohemian Rhapsody" and the "Operatic" section was much smaller when they began recording but Freddie kept adding on to it. There are various lyrics in the "Operatic" section that seems to refer to the band. Freddie casts himself as Scaramouche, a stock clown of 16th-century Italian literature. Galileo who was an Italian astrometer, physicist, and engineer definitely refers to Brian (Queen's lead guitarist) who in real life is Dr. Brian May,, who has a Ph.D.in Astrophysics. Figaro refers to the Mozart opera, "The Marriage of Figaro" and it is a subtle way to reference Roger Taylor (Queen's drummer) who has a four-range vocal span (E2-E6) and was even frequently cited as hitting E5 in live performances. Freddie compared Roger's voice to a dog whistle. The final reference of Magnifico is John Deacon, who has a degree in Electrical Engineering. John is the creator of the "Deacy Amp" which when connected to Brian May's guitar through a treble-booster could produce sounds reminiscent of various orchestral instruments, such as violin, cello, trombone, clarinet, or even vocals. It is hard to realize that it is only Freddie, Brian, and Roger singing in the "Operatic" section (John never sang on the records). This was 1975, well before digital recordings and they were using 24-track analog tape. This made it necessary for the three to overdub themselves many times and "bounce" these down to successive sub-mixes. Some sections feature 180 separate overdubs! The fifth section is the "Hard Rock" portion. In this section, Freddie sings angry lyrics addressed to an unspecified "you", accusing them of betrayal and abuse and insisting "can't do this to me, baby", before the final lines conclude with him singing, "just gotta get right outta here". (FYI - the "Operatic" and the "Hard Rock" sections of BoRap were featured in a scene in the 1992 film Wayne's World, in which the main character and his friends headbang in a car to the rock part.) In the sixth and final section, the "Outro" returns back to the "Ballad" to close the circle of the song and ends with the sound of a Chinese gong. Welcome to the world of Queen.

As another poster has mentioned, the lead singer is originally from Zanzibar and originally from your neck of the woods. I don't think there is a bad song, or even a mediocre song in Queen's catalogue. Lots of people will list the classics but there are some more rare but equally fun songs like "Who want to live forever" and "Flash Gordan" They are all good, but this song...is perfection.

Hi, I was a sad, 14 yo when this song was released. I thought it was so beautiful and I was always excited to hear it on the radio. But years later, when Freddie Mercury passed, I couldn’t listen to their music. He was so talented and beautiful.

This song is a metaphor. Freddie was coming out at this time of his life and he was struggling to cope with his sexuality. He refers to killing a man, and apologizing to his mother, but what this really means is that he feels like he's killed his old self and he's trying to explain that to his mother and apologize for that. He's trying to "leave you all behind and face the truth", which is his way of saying, I'm not the man everyone thinks I am and I'm not the man I used to be, I'm coming out and going to face the truth. The song gets more complicated in the operatic verse where he talks about the devil and Beelzebub (another name for Satan and one of seven demons of hell, who represents gluttony and envy) and asking them to "let me go" "NO!! We will not let you go". Again, Freddie's way of realizing and expressing in a song that his sexuality (as it was seen in those days) was going to send him to hell. The music, the theatricality, the technical genius and the production is second to none. The other significant element of this song, is the video. This was the first video of it's kind - no other band had ever made a single "movie" to promote a song or an album before this. This was ground breaking and led to every other band on the planet attempting to replicate this process and reap the rewards. This video and others that followed led to the creation of MTV and VH-1 and an entire industry to promote music, beyond just the albums themselves.

One of my life regrets is that entirely because I was born too late, I would have loved to be in the audience the first time this was ever done live for a crowd. To see that moment in history and to feel the electricity of such a pivotal piece of music hitting people for the first time, oh that's something I would've loved to see.
