N.I.B. is a reference to the drummer, who had a beard at the time that “looked like a pen nib” and it’s an inside joke for the band. As for the lyrics, the song is about the devil falling in love and deciding to change completely and become a good person for the sake of his lover.

People always side-eyed me when I said Black Sabbath was actually a band that stood for love.

Interesting Black Sabbath fact: their first advertisement in the rock magazines was a half page completely black with only one sentence. Didn't say anything about Ozzy, it only read: "Black Sabbath - louder than Led Zeppelin."

Sabbath was NEVER a “satanic” band. Quite the opposite in fact.

That "guitar" lead in to the song is Geezer Butler playing the Bass guitar, it's a lead in called Bassically.

They wrote dark music to stand apart from the pack . When first they got together , their practice spot was near a movie theater . Their name comes from the title of a Boris Karloff horror movie . They liked the vibe and began writing horror songs .

No this is not the kind of thing you would find on a jukebox. This is way too hard for most of the bars back in the day. This was at home on your vinyl! Or at your buddies house, or in your dad’s collection! We would all hang out and get our mind right and listen to Sabbath! They are definitely a jam!

My friend is a vicar/priest and loves Black Sabbath, so don't take their lyrics seriously. In fact, because of their name and lyric content, they used to attract a lot of occult fans. They were asked by some satanists to play at stonehenge, Ozzy told them to f**k off. He told one group who invited the band to black masses that "the only spirits I'm interested in are whiskey and vodka". There are lots of stories about Satan in the bible and no one says "I'm not going to read the bible any more". This song is simply about Satan falling in love and trying to tempt her, much like us humans do. If you really want to know what Black Sabbath were about.....the classic song War Pigs says it all......anti war, anti violence.

In the rock/metal community black Sabbath is considered the top of the top of the mountain and even the blueprint of hard rock and metal. (Ozzy years) 🏆

When he said "Playing guitars already" on a bass solo (the solo is named Bassically) I laughed. Also, in the 70s era Black Sabbath, Ozzy was famous for "riding the guitar" with his vocals, if you want a banger by them where he doesn't do that, might I suggest War Pigs, Black Sabbath (yes, a song named after the band as well as an album), or Children of the Grave.

And most of the industry did just that, sold their souls for Rock and Roll!

There was a line of people waiting to get in to see the Boris Karloff movie, "Black Sabbath" Either Geezer or Tony said, "Isn't it weird how people line up to get the shit scared out of them?" They decided to write horror themed music, and the band Black Sabbath was born. People don't get mad at Halloween or Friday the 13th because you know it's art for entertainment.

‘Juke joint’ is old-fashioned terminology, but it’s got style. Today they’d just call it a pub, a club, or maybe a billiard hall. I still say ‘juke joint’. It’s funny you should say that, though, because 20 + years ago between the ages of 18 and 23 I used to play this and the Doors’ ‘Roadhouse Blues’ all the time on the jukebox in my favourite place to make money and drinks credits playing 9-ball. On bad nights, everyone had to suffer through my listening to the Replacements. (I jest; the Replacements were one of the greatest underground bands of the 80s and early 90s, but they were known to be the alcoholic’s best friends. Their songs ‘Hold My Life’ and ‘If Only You Were Lonely’ were my favourite tunes when I’d had a lousy 12 hours (+) at work, and on top of that I was playing pool very badly, and losing money. I just felt lonely and low, all around, so I’d go up to my favourite bartender, order the smokiest, peatiest single malt Scotch they served, which was my signal to her that I was depressed and self-flagellating. She was a sweetheart, so she’d pull the plug on the jukebox if there were under a certain number of people in the pub and play my favourite Replacements tunes on the bar’s own PA system. Also, about every third drink was on the house, and she would hang round at chat with me till I fel roughly human again. She was an absolute darling. Anyroad…I’m off-topic. Pardon me; I’m crippled, now, and haven’t much of a life, so I love to tell stories from my youth, when I was actually a kind of a micro-celebrity in the circles in which I ran. My unmedicated ADHD makes the problem much worse, but ADHD meds-which are all, basically, crank-make my muscles spasm and twitch, which causes a lot of unpredictable pain against which I can’t guard miself. Again, I’m off track. The point is, I’ve heard it more it billiard halls and juke joints than even on classic rock radio, even when I didn’t play it miself.

The lead singer of Black Sabbath’s nickname is the prince of darkness. So he went really into that aspect. However had one of the best voices for rock music. Also if you don’t know the lead singers name it’s Ozzie Osbourne.

I love Ozzy. Happy to see this here. You should check out Black Sabbath War Pigs. Still a relevant song. But I'm shocked that there is nothing about Chris Cornell on this channel. No solo stuff, no Soundgarden, no Audioslave. He is considered one of the best singers in the history or rock. So much talent in that one dude. I’ve never heard anyone not enjoy him. Cornell has something for everyone in his vast catalog. His voice is one that was legendary and he is so missed.

They decided to call the song 'N.I.B.' and of course, their fans obsessed over the meaning of the letters and came up w/ 'Nativity in Black'... Geezer Butler (bass) said he wrote the lyrics about a fictional scenario about the devil falling in love w/ a woman ... and has to have her. Christian groups freaked out about Black Sabbath's associations w/ 'Lucifer' and 'Satan' on the 1st album in 1970 and blacklisted Black Sabbath ... The band always maintained that the only time satan was mentioned was as a warning about getting involved w/ 'the dark side' 😈 Led Zeppelin also got targeted by religious groups because of guitarist Jimmy Page being fascinated w/ black magic and the works of notorious British satanist Aleister Crowley... but Zeppelin never even mentioned satan in their lyrics.

The song is about the lucifers Tempting Embrace, or if you want to be Hyperbolic, the licentiousness of man. Note how the song is alluring you the entire time. "Some people say my love cannot be true. Please believe me, my love, and I'll show you." It's a sirens call to a life of perverse immorality that as a species we are drawn to. It was also written to piss off the Judgemental Hypocrits that was the Christian population of the time. As a Christian myself it's one of my favorite Black sabbath songs. Ironic right? But, to be fair, these are things that we should be vigilant of: it may sound alluring but it ultimately is the wrong path.
