There's this video on RU-vid where Courtney does a live 'one shot' vocal take of Rule Of Nines and it completely blew me away how talented she was, specially when it comes to the screaming, goosebumps for days. Love this band.
I am so beyond pleased that you came across this band. I am already a huge fan of your content for its "mariana trench-level" depth, and rule of nines didn't just awaken my love for music but also made me pick up a guitar and start writing again which has been just priceless to me. I can't wait for you to be able to break down that track like no one else does on here and I can finally see someone do it justice. Thanks for the content, my dude!
Would love for you to react to Courtney doing the live "one take" performance of Rule of Nines. Really impressive how much range she has. I also highly recommend the song Blessed Be, its quite possibly one of the catchiest songs I've heard
Yeah, all of those vocals are Courtneys vocals. I saw them just before the shutdown in March, in Berlin. She is absolutely able to reproduce that vocal range on stage (the clean vocals, the screams, the brutal growls). The sickest thing was when she put her mic down while the breakdown of this song and yelled/growled at the crowd and you could hear everything. The whole band is incredibly talented.
I've never heard of this band before now, so glad I decided to watch them, 'cause now I'm obsessed with spirit box. Cannot WAIT until you hear 'Rule of Nines'. It's my favorite so far.
I love how insightful your reactions/reviews are, great depiction of how change, tempo, effects, melody etc affect listener perspective without spending ages paused talking a load of nonsense. You should definitely check spiritbox out more, blessed be is great if you want a shorter song, but the mara effect live at silverside sound would be awesome to see u dissect if you had the time.
Arcade sounds in this song are made by the higher 5 strings (from a 7 string guitar) on the second fret by resting your finger there. It’s actually pretty tough cuz you have to play those palm mutes in between
Your commentary on breakdowns is amazing. "It marks a change of tempo" is something I have never considered, having listened to music like this for 15 years. It's not always a slow down. It can speed up too. There's not ALWAYS a build up but usually there is, then tempo change. Callout too sometimes. Then back to normal. Love this shit.
Don't know if anyone commented yet but the second verse is tuned lower. That's why it sounds heavier. Kemper and MIDI I believe. He has a playthrough video. Great work!!
Well, I know the playlist for the next several days. :D Whoever nagged Chase to do it, thank you, and of course thanks to Chase for his outstanding analysis.
I was late to the game too but the "Blessed Be" video got me hooked and I'm in anticipation of more solid pieces from them. I'm so glad you did a video of them because I'd like to see you react to them again!
I am so glad you found Spiritbox. Do yourself a huge favor and listen to The Mara Effect Part 1-3 live at the studio. It truly shows every single person's range as a musician. It's so, so, so, so good.
Had never heard of Spiritbox before; you keep introducing me to amazing bands - thanks! This song is an absolute belter. You know when you hear the first two seconds of a song and it's already clear that you're going to love it? That's what happened here. I've been listening to it on a loop for days.
Thank you for checking out Spiritbox! They are pretty amazing. All of their music videos are worth checking out... they put a lot of thought into the design and usually add some details that are easy to miss if you get too lost in the music.
Bro, what a way to first encounter Spiritbox! DEFINITELY listen to more, they literally have not yet released a bad song. EDIT: And absolutely yes that is Courtney singing. If you ever listened to Iwrestledabearonce it's the same vocalist (and guitarist, her husband Michael Stringer) EDIT 2: Another super great metal band with a badass female vocalist for you to check out is Rolo Tomassi, their last record is superb
It’s so amazing how you’re dissecting this song so thoroughly on the fly. I’ve heard this song so many times and didn’t even notice some of the layers of sound that you picked out. 👍👍
@@ChaseCarneson ofcourse man, just nice to hear someone actually listening to the songs and breaking them down a bit. Good stuff! btw, really interested in hearing your opinions on Rolo Tomassi, amazing band with a female vocalist aswell. Their song Rituals is a good one to start with.
Just stumbled upon your channel by a YT recommendation and I gotta say that I wish I’d found your channel WAY SOONER! I’m loving your channel and the way you dissect each song you react to! I’m gonna look through some back videos and just see what other songs you’ve reacted to! Keep up the amazing work!
Ok, so I just watched an interview with Mike the guitaris and I SWEAR HE SAID they came up with this song EXACTLY HOW YOU JUST SAID!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 They had written a bunch of melodic material and needed something heavy. They were screwing around with samples and as a goof, used it as the start of this this song.....AWEEOME! YOU CALLED IT AGAIN. 👍
Can't wait to hear your reaction to Rule of Nines, and I'd recommend Blessed Be as well if you want to hear more of Courtney's beautiful singing voice.
Yes! It's all her. Why did you think the chicken cross the road? Because they saw Courtney with machete. Love the Midsommar vibe here. Thanks for this 😁 Btw congrats on 15k 😎 Anything special for subs?
Great reaction to a masterpiece, glad you enjoyed it! Courtney is amazing, and it's great to see them getting the recognition they deserve. Personally Rule of Nine's (based on the system they use to assess burns victims) is my other favourite song of theirs, recommend reacting to that one too.
As I understand it... Spiritbox were due to make an album this year but covid has got in the way. But they wanted to put something out for the fans. They had been performing a version of this song live but it was never intended to be a single but to give something to their fans (they really do appreciate their fans) they fleshed the song out into what you've just watched.
This is like Midsommar meets Meshuggah. Yes, Chase. That's all her screaming. Courtney made me forget about Alissa White-Gluz. My only complain is that the song is short. Check out Belcarra next. Edit: Oh ok, you decided to check out Rule of Nines. I suggest the live version then 😁
The only Spiritbox songs I really like are Belcarra and this one. It was a pleasant surprise when Holy Roller came out. I hope they continue into that heavy experimentations
@@2abug Belcarra was my intro song to this band. I thought Court was so badass and even listened to her old stuff from iwabo. While I enjoyed Blessed Be, Rule of 9s, etc., this song slaps hard. Holy Roller is my very fav of them so far.
Why the live version? Sure it’s awesome and proves she can do all the vocals you’re hearing in the music videos but it’s focused on her voice over the full band sound and their production choices.
The background sound is from a spiritbox. The tool paranormal investigators use to attempt talking to spirits, a common theme (as well as a horror theme) to their songs, hence the name "Spiritbox ". Cheers!
Random interesting note (which may help explain some of the music video and the style they're going for). A 'spiritbox' is a device that randomly cycles between radio stations in such a way that you get little bits and pieces of voices. Allegedly ghosts are able to manipulate this in such a way that they can 'speak' through those voices. Ghost hunters will ask questions and listen to the spiritbox for answers.

Cool reaction! Besides Rule of Nine and Blessed Be, they have The Mara Effect, a a beautiful and brutal 3 parts song journey (they have a live session with all 3 parts on YT), I really recommend it.
Electronic and metal seems to be the July 2020 theme with this, Hypa Hypa, and Parasite Eve. Love it. Here's a song for you to check out from one of my favourite Prog/Post Metal bands, The Ocean - Jurassic | Cretaceous.. amazing song that just released last week
Ah you know I'm geeked 🤓 You have some fun ahead of you with this band. This song adds a lot new to their sound, but it's somewhat only one side of them, as Courtney sings clean really well too!
Great reaction as always dude! Quick suggestion, Your Colors Your Feelings by Story Of Hope, really underrated Metalcore band that sadly broke up some years ago, but they are amazing, hopefully you'll like them!
It is awesome seeing you react to lots of bands with female singers. Blessed Be is the song that got me into SpiritBox. You highlighted that you liked SpiritBox's style of screaming, so I would love to hear your thoughts on Lauren Babic from Red Handed Denial. Their song Trespasser does a great job showing off her clean vocals and how they mix with sporadic use of various types of growls/screams. Alternatively, the more recent song Empire shows off her dirty vocals much better. Both videos are also worth reacting to in their own right. Other female-fronted bands that I think are worth your attention are RedHook and New Years Day. RedHook - Turn Up The Stereotype was my song of the year for 2018. A great mix of genres and I think you'd really enjoy it (whether you react to it on your channel, or just listen for your own enjoyment) New Years Day - Skeletons is also a great look into their mix of metal and pop.
Love this video!!! Great band and I'm really excited for the Rule of Nines video!! I definitely think you should check out Silent Planet!!! They are a really good progressive metalcore band! I would recommend Depths II or Panic Room!!
Random comment about the guitar work- I’m pretty sure the guitar/bass stuff gets progressively tuned down, (yay for pitch shifting live lol,) in half steps as the song goes leading to the breakdown which I think is in drop Eb and it returns to the original tuning for the final “chorus” or whatever you want to call it.
Hooo finally Courtney is getting some love! They are amazing, and they have a few studio videos of just Courtney singing some musics, you gotta check those out if you wanna see her belting in all her splendor and look in detail at her technique. The Beauty Of Suffering - Spiritbox (Courtney LaPlante Live Performance) and Spiritbox - Belcarra (Courtney LaPlante Live Performance) are TOTALLY worth it!
thx for introducing me to Spiritbox. I can return the favor - try Sybreed - Doomsday Party. I'll bet it will be a long relationship, there is a lot to digest in their catalog.
I would absolutely love it if you could react to Make Them Suffer!! They just released a new album and I'd say either Bones or Erase Me would be a perfect start! And yep, she does all the vocals! She actually used to be the more recent vocalist for iwrestledabearonce! This band has been consistently putting out incredible music and you'll love them
The band "the ocean" released the first song of their upcoming album a week ago. The song is called "Jurassic | Crataceous". I would really love to hear your opinion on it since I love your analyzes and this band has some really cool things going on but is relativly unknown unfortunatly.
Man I like your videos a lot and I'd be much pleased to see you reacting to "Polyphia - O.D." or "Nasty" Or maybe "Abandoned" from "Unprocessed" Maybe all of them, why not haha Good work man!
You should check out her single take live shoot/recording of "Rule Of Nines". She moves seamlessly between cleans and gutterals perfectly. Tatiana of Jinjer is another who is amazing.
Another band whose name I've been seeing around for ages but always thought "later" for...I will now proceed with the self-flagellation. Really cool, and I'm a sucker for pretty redheads. Bonus!
