The SWM RE500 is a brand new model-sort of. It’s a new name for a bike that we find very familiar. When we last tested it in 2020, it was called the SWM RS500 and it was a fully certified dual-sport bike. Now, the 2023 version is back as a dirt-only model, simply because it’s awaiting recertification. If you know how the federal government works, you know that could take a while. Rather than wait for that to happen, the U.S. importer made a few changes and is offering it as a trail bike. Those changes include richer mapping and a more aggressive WRP exhaust system. In many states, this model is fully acceptable as a dual-sport bike as is.We will forgive you if you don’t know what an SWM is in the first place, but you might know more about it than you think. The motor and frame were once sold under the Husqvarna name. Back in 2006 Husqvarna was the first company to offer a truly dirt worthy dual-sport bike. A few years later, BMW purchased Husqvarna and discontinued this particular model because the Germans had just designed their own dual-sport 450. In that time period, BMW financed and built a whole new Husqvarna factory near Varese, Italy, then promptly lost interest in the whole project. They sold the Husky brand to KTM and abandoned the new factory.That’s when SWM came into the picture. An investment company got the factory going again and acquired all the tooling to make the old Huskys under the SWM name. They were street-legal in 2020, but then changed U.S. importers and now the bike must go through the certification process all over again. Got it? There might be a test later. Of course, the new SWM isn’t exactly the same as an old Husky. It has much more sophisticated Mikuni fuel injection, new body work, Brembo brakes and KYB suspension. Even with all that stuff, the price is $8299.he RE500 isn’t quite like any other bike currently sold in the U.S. The closest might be a Yamaha WR450F or a Honda CRF450R, but even those bikes are imported as off-road motorcycles and meet federal noise and emission standards, whereas the SWM is is a more aggressive state of tune. The power out put isn’t bad at all. It’s no race bike, but it’s great for trail riding in wide-open spaces and can go hill-climbing with the best of them. Its weakest point is its weight. It weighs 274 pounds on our scale without fuel. It’s also a very big motorcycle with a seat height that is intimidating to riders of medium stature.

it's funny I have a wr426 and since I'm in the country and don't care about johnny law I only ride secondary roads or dirt roads to get to trails. I think most people who ride duel sports are mainly wanting a dirt bike but don't want to get pulled over by a super trooper.

I would love to have one of those bikes like yours, but I'd like for it to have foot pegs on the back to take a passenger through light trail riding. At the moment, I've got my eye on a Tenere 700 but I'd much rather have something smaller and more nimble to be able to do some good solo riding through rough terrain. The 700 seems too big for that but on the other hand perfect for 2 person trail riding. I used to have a 500 class 2 stroke and I'm seriously missing the ability to climb just about anything that presents itself and there is no way the 700 would work. Just asking since you've owned one for a long time and I'd like your input. Thank you.

If you’re not a racer and don’t have the budget for a ktm etc, buy an SWM. They do everything almost as well as the others for about half the price (in OZ anyway) Good service intervals, with 1.8L oil capacity. My 300 came with a single Arrow exhaust and weighs in at 107kg which, like my brother, isn’t heavy. Could do with a couple more litres of fuel and a slightly higher 6th gear, but otherwise they are a perfect trail bike in my humble opinion.

It looks like a polished up KTM RFS, which are some of the most dependable, long lasting high performance four strokes ever made. Rocker actuated valves that can be wrench adjusted vs. bucket and shim which many times require camshaft removal for adjustment. Wouldn't even bother with a rebuild on those bikes until 10k offroad miles at least. The platform that this bike is based off of is still a reliable offroad machine to this day. A buddy of mine has an '04 KTM 450EXC and he's never done anything other than change the oil and adjust the valves.

Great vid and great timing. Spent yesterday exploring some of our Utah mountain trails and "roads" on my 08 990. Some of the smaller, rocky trails were just too tight or steep for turning around 500+ lbs when things shut down. (I'm not getting any younger) so I made the decision to seriously look into adding a 500 to the stable. Big enough to ride on the road and open desert blasting and small enough to get turned around when a rocky climb goes bad. The EXC was my likely choice, but I'm not thrilled with KTM's digital direction (as in their "Demo" mode in the new 890R) or their prices. Some of your descriptions of the SWM sound like what I'm looking for, in a smaller package...grunt, plush, proven....cheap.

@chrigul1
@chrigul1 Год назад
@@andreasbronwaller567 Yes I am. Early Husqvarna 4 strokers came in the early 80`s. They had a self constructed and fabricated motor. Then, in 1986, Electrolux (the mother company of Husqvarna) sold the bike - sector of Husqvarna to Cagiva (Castiglioni Brothers) and the manufactury also went to italy. Some guys from Husqvarna nevertheless didn`t want to go to Italy and formed a new brand, Husaberg. At the beginning, they used basically the same 4 stroke motor as was used before in the Husqvarna. Meanwhile, Husqvarna (Italy) stayed a short time on the original swedish motor (wich was strong, but very unreiable because of weak lubricating of the head and bearings), but then made an own construction. This motor was enginneered and built by MV Agusta. One can see the brand on the casting of those Huskys. Later, BMW bought Husqvarna for a short time, and finally KTM was taking the name of Husaberg and Husqvarna as well, but that`s another story. Heja from Switzerland :-)

No supermotard for that kawi like I had planned. This bike will be the perfect supermotard platform that won't break the bank converting it over! It looks great and I love the engine! As for the tank, you can wait for the aftermarket or just commission your own! If I felt I needed far more fuel and I was impatient; I would simply buy some aluminum sheet and TIG weld a larger tank. Then bring it to the planishing hammer to work the harder angles/edges into a smooth contact area for my legs. I may well buy this one!

The Gallon and a Half tank, That's got to be replaced B. The squared off exhaust tubing concerns me, as it very much seems to be a double edged bottle neck. Look at how many 90 degree bends are at the front of the engine. Wow that can't be good on scavenging. Other than those negatives I do like this awesome bike Price, performance, and looks.

@@rideyourbike This review is about the SWM. If you'd like to review those others models, I'd love to see them. Their being superior in your opinion doesn't really matter to those that can't afford them. Main thing the SWM has going for it is price and it's based on a proven design. For myself, I'd also prefer the KYB suspension.

@@kugangles9860 I have owned a DRZ400SM and a DRZ400E and they were great bikes. Easy and cheap maintenance and long service intervals. The SWM has shorter service intervals and has additional oil screens that have to be cleaned with each service. Not a major job but adds to the maintenance. The SWM has 6 gears, fuel injection, better suspension, better brakes, hydraulic clutch and feels much lighter. Even though it is an older design it feels lightyears ahead of the DRZ as a dirt bike. I have an SWM RS 300 R which I love but the DRZ is much better on the road. The RS 300/500 is really just a dirt bike with indicators and lights. The DRZ is more versatile and can do longer distances quite comfortably.

An xr650L wet weight with full tank of fuel is 349lbs. The fluids cannot weigh 75+lbs The wet weight of the SWM RS500R with a fuel tank of fuel (yes the fuel tank is small) is just under 300lbs. Having ridden both the RS500R and the XR650L I can tell you the SWM is significantly lighter.
