The words KTM and reliability should never be used in the same sentence. That SV ever so quietly has been extremely reliable and overlooked for years.

@@PetSounds38I dunno, I've had a lot of dukes (125,200,390,690)and they all had lots of problems , my 690 has been a nightmare but she's my baby and I will love her to the end of time. It's a different machine , you can't even compare it to other bikes it's so different. My bandit , 44k runs like a dream and I love her but she's just not my duke Yaknow 😅

I've been lucky enough to own both long-term... if I had to describe each of them in three words, those words would be "easy, grunty, friendly" and "just fucking bonkers". Guess which one is which. I loved the SV and in comparison to the Duke, it's easier to live with, a fair bit heavier, and a fair bit cheaper. But the Duke - my current steed (a Duke R no less) - makes me feel 30 years younger, and I ride it like the twat I was when I was 17, everywhere, usually with a wide open throttle. I love the fact it weighs as much as an ice cream wafer and getting 70mpg out of it too. It's my antidote to the tedium of everyday humdrum, and I've had a lot of easy, grunty, friendly bikes over the years. The 690 was the big orange reset button I needed to reboot my life. It's impossible not to fall in love with them. Ps. You can sort out the revvy gutless nature of the 690 with an ECU tune and a tweak to the standard gearing.

Hi Caspian...I'm interested in a 2015 Duke 690..It's got an Akrapovic exhaust. Do you think the Akrapovic would turn the Duke into a beast/make it go fucking bonkers? I assume the pipe would be loud as fuck.

If you're going to guess on the MSRP of a bike and state in the video that you think the SV is $1500 less than the KTM but you will throw the actual MSRP up on the screen during final editing, then you should do so! SV ABS MSRP $7499; non-ABS $7049. The SV is $2.5K to $3K less than the KTM. That is a significant $ difference and should be correctly noted in the video or notes section since you gave incorrect information in what you stated.

I don't think it makes much sense to compare these two. The SV is a V twin budget naked bike that's made to do everything decently, but nothing particularly well. The Duke is a single cylinder sumo/naked bike hybrid with top of the line suspension and brakes, extremely light weight and very focused on being a great hooligan bike. The Duke is a lot better in the twisties and a lot more fun, while the SV is cheaper and better at most everyday things you'll use it for.

First, great review of both bikes! Bought a 17' SV650 (non abs ) back in Oct of last year. It is my first bike. Took the MSF course and started riding at 55 yoa. I have nothing to compare it to as I have not ridden any other bike. I can tell you it is a great bike for a beginner and has room to grow into. The bike is a hoot to ride with plenty of low end but will keep up easily on the interstate. Rode it to Macon for a business meeting and turned around and rode back home. 300 miles and it was comfortable the whole time. Keep up the great content!

Second SV I've owned, had an SV1000s with a GSXR1000 front end before and loved that bike dearly although it was a bit of a bull. This bike is just a peach, so easy to ride, pretty comfortable on decent length rides (even with the X model having clip-ons), proven drivetrain that still sings like the SV always has, just a really good bike. When the local shop put it up for $6k I snatched it up the next day.

@mikef9336 5 лет назад
@@BennyZ88 bike is really fun and perfect power for a commuter. If you have a need for speed start or if you are going to be riding with sport bikes get a 600 sport bike because this bike isn't gonna keep up with them. I ride with my friend who has a r1 and we can stay together on the twisties but on the highway or straight s he's gone. But it Depends on what you want to do as a rider. I have done long 7 hour rides with no issue, GPS top speed 126, plenty fast around town. I also say i will probably never sell the sv because it's different than a sports bike you can really ride the crap out of it where a sports bike is very touchy. Its a different feeling.

@@FRJohnny777 I agree that it isn't the best at anything in particular, but it does however do everything well (enough), especially for what it is and the price Suzuki charge. Plus that 650 v-twin engine in particular has loads of character/charm and is what makes it what it is. Such a sweet engine to live with every day and fantastic on fuel. IMHO it's one of the motorcycling world's great engines, period (note the use of 'one of' and not 'the'). Plus it's got a reliability reputation KTM could only dream of, as much as I love KTM. The Duke might be more 'fun', I don't deny that one bit, however the SV would be your partner for longer. It's more the long term girl next door whilst the KTM is the spicy 'fling' that you have on the side! Plus who wouldn't prefer the sound of a V-Twin over a 'thumper'! I will eventually move up to fast 750 parallel 4 or maybe even a v-twin 1000. I'm 6-12 months away from that decision. Where im from its neither legal or illegal to lane split. I've tested the theory several times lane splitting Police cars in heavy traffic and they don't seem to mind unless one is being too fast. The sv650x even with clip ons is so easy to maneuver in 2nd or 3rd.

They never stopped making the sv650 in the us, just the 1000. They changed the name to the gladius and targeted it for women. It sold poorly hence why the named it the sv650 again.

Correct. But did Gladius actually continue through each year?

I used to own Duke 690R for 4 years. Removed the catalytic converter and put on power bomb. Complaints from the neighbours everyday when I ramped up the throttle. I rode it like a hooligan (or idiot you may say). Playing cat & mouse with the police. Loved the bike so much, it made me feel 17 again when this old man was early 40s at that time. 😂 I'm planning to buy SV650 next. A perfect bike for almost 50 yo uncle like me 🤣

@@snoopythedog3266 i didn't say the sv wouldn't be fun. What i mean is that if i was to make a choice comparison I would buy each of these bikes with these reasons. I wouldn't want to do distance on the ktm, it would be a toy mostly. I could do distance on an sv.

Sold to sv650.. can't spend more than what sv cost. I prefer the timeless looks of the sv than that of a one hit wonder ktm690. I have to admit ktm690 looks good.. but it's beauty seems kind if a trend only. 3k difference means alot. Brembo stops the same as with other brands. And I'm done with single cylinder engine.

I have a 2016 690 Duke and it’s worth the extra money to me, but I’ve been riding over 40 years and own several bikes. I wanted better suspension and brakes than my old bikes had for blasting back roads.. if it was my first street bike I’d pick the SV 650. It’s a lot of bang for the buck and cheaper to maintain.. It also depends on where you ride most. If you ride hilly twisty back roads the Duke is worth it in my opinion. But if you ride mostly flat straight roads, then not so much.

I think it is difficult to compare motor cycle engine with accuracy with Suzuki. Suzuki has a lots of factories in the world. But regarding motor cycle engine, they are assembling at one factory next to their main office. and They are mostly hand made. one by one They are still keeping family business style.

No one truly believes how good the SV is until a track coach absolutely smokes you from pit lane to the finish line on one. The Duke is cool too. Good comparison.

I like the Suzuki sv650, the smoothness will make my ride softer since I did broke my neck, back and many more bones and I’m also a beginner rider. The sv could be modify to bring it to a track when I finally get good. Great review also and ya go a new sub here, look forward to more great vids

I´ve had a ´09 SV 650, it did, what it should do, but since I´ve had more bikes before (I´ve hopped on SV from a Ducati 999), I´ve found the suspension little bit too soft, brakes little weak...etc, but service costs were nothing except an oil/filter change and reliability was superb. But really lack of "emotions". I´ve sold it after nearly a year of ownership and bought a ´14 KTM Duke 690 and I´m smiling during and after every ride. It´s nearly 20kgs lighter than the SV, has 5HP less of power, MUCH better brakes (even the single disc in front works much better than the twin disc on SV) and superb suspension, even if it´s non-adjustable. It´s my least powerful bike, but since its torque and lightness I´m having more fun than ever before.

Can they ship one to CA? Oh wait no they can’t hahahaha I had an SV650 as my first bike and that thing was scary. The low end grunt that just shot the front end up ALLL the time even when you weren’t expecting it was really an eye opening first bike. It almost ruined 4 cylinder bikes for me because I fell in love with the low end torque of the 90 degree V-twin. Like the RC51 I will always love the SV650 and any V-twin for that matter. I’m on a VTX1800 right now and I would definitely add a new SV to my lineup. Not so much the Duke but I know they have their following just as hardcore as the SV.

It is almost impossible to compare bikes even if they are identical as there are many different skill levels even amongst professionals. Lot's of variables. I could say that the Yamaha is probably more forgiving for beginners.

I bought my 2000 reg SV650N in 2001 with 2600 miles on it and in showroom condition with just some rear tyre wear. I still own it today as I love it and sometimes get non bikers coming over and having a look at it when I'm refueling. They usually comment that they thought it was a nearly new bike because it's in such good condition. Lately I've been thinking of getting a Honda CB1000R but if I do, it will be keeping the sv company in the garage as I don't think I'll ever sell it.
