We just wanted to take a moment to express our gratitude to everyone who supports our channel and our business. It is cool to think, that as folks are watching us fish , the same halibut in this video are on FedEx delivery trucks and headed to families across the US, just days after being harvested. It is because of you, our customers, viewers and Patreons that we can continue pursuing our dreams and doing what we love. We are humbled by your generosity and support. Thank you and best wishes to All!

I fished halibut in the old days before quotas. We used tubs (fishermen know what that is) and it was crazy and dangerous. I'd like to go out just to watch a boat using snap gear. Since we were pressed for time we were not so gentle with bycatch and I've always felt bad about that.

Looks like a fair start of your fall halibut season. A few problems with catching bait and now the reel. Hopefully after this weather passes the catch picks up and the equipment behaves. Hey Sandy. If you look closely you will see a single spoke from the manual helm. This vessel is so easy to steer that is all that is needed and a large wheel just takes up a bunch of space.

I do a lot of fishing in New England for fun for cod, haddock, pollock, etc. When you use the straight eye circle hooks, do you find you get better hookups going through the front of the hook vs through the back when you attach it to the line?
@EISAlaska
@EISAlaska 2 года назад
Not sure about hookups, but for baiting its much easier when the loop is through the front.
@johnkenure4188

Hi great vid ,just wondering why the dog fish are not kept for bait as the tough skin are good for retention on hook? cheers from New Zealand
@EISAlaska
@EISAlaska 2 года назад
Hi John. They are good bait and we will use it if we are low on bait during a trip. If they come up dead we utilize them, otherwise we prefer to release them alive. That goes for everything really. No use killing them unless necessary. Cheers!

Just found the site a few ago, subscribed, trying to catch up. What's the largest Halibut you guys caught on the long line?
@B-kl8vj
@B-kl8vj 2 года назад
Nice work as usual. Do you get a lower price for the giant halibut? I assume that fillets are so thick and may be tougher?
@EISAlaska
@EISAlaska 2 года назад
Price splits are common when delivering to fish buyers and processing plants. The halibut are graded by weight (in pounds) and are 10-20, 20-40, 40-60 and 60-Up. Surprisingly the larger fish fetch the premium price. They keep well frozen and have a better recovery, especially when they are steaked. The difference between small and large fish can be upwards of 50-60 cents a pound. As we direct market our own fish the price split does not affect us and we tend to target fish in the 20 pound range which nets good recovery rates and nice fillets. You are correct when it comes to quality. The giants tend to be dry and have grainier flesh.

When you're leaving there is a giant landslide mark on the hill I was wondering if you could tell the story behind that one
@EISAlaska
@EISAlaska 2 года назад
Hi redfish fun. That is named the Pillar Mountain Landslide. Google it and it pulls up some interesting information. It is actually an ancient landslide that has seen some movement in the last 50 years, particularly in the early 70's when renewed movement was noted as the toe of the slope was removed for fill for the new city dock. It became of concern to the surrounding city and harbor and a preliminary study was conducted to asses the potential hazard. If one looks carefully you can see the original highway on each side of the slide (about 140 feet up the slide). There is a lot of info in this Pub from the USGS. pubs.er.usgs.gov/publication/ofr78217
@EISAlaska
@EISAlaska 2 года назад
This is a really good report prepared in 2013 for the City. It has some really good background info and also very good figures and photos of the slope. The gabion wall in those photos was replaced 5 or 6 years ago. www.city.kodiak.ak.us/sites/default/files/fileattachments/engineer/page/313/final_report_pillar_mtn_1300823.pdf
