So I was a kid in the '70s and my mother used to put Wonder bread bags on my feet before I put on my boots growing up in the Buffalo suburbs in the winter. I noticed you were struggling to get your boot on and saying you needed some lube. You had the bag under the sock. It's supposed to go over the sock. It would have slid right in. 😁
Hey shug. A few years ago I went through an emotionally difficult time. Your videos made me smile and encouraged me to get outside. Now I’m in a different career with lots of joy and only a few hard moments here and there but your videos still make me smile and remind me that the hardest hikes often end at the most peaceful campsites.
21:00 "I'm boring you now though [with] that technical talk-I'll talk to you later-buh-bye." Maybe I'm boring, but personally, I love the technical talk. I'm more of an ultralight guy in the summer (within reason), but I find myself feeling a bit under-packed in the winter, having had limited experience, so I'm always fascinated to see what new gear ideas Shug brings to the sport. It's interesting to see how the other half lives! The other half meaning the half of the community who have extra clothes to put on in the morning lmao, unlike use gram weenies. I've seen something like that metal table before on Hammock Gear, but never would I have imagined that you could light an alcohol stove on it and make coffee & breakfast from arms-reach without getting out of the hammock. Genius.
Nice 3 night " early " winter trip on the SHT. I liked the Lake Agnes campsite when I hiked the trail. I only had two others camping there and one person knew who I was from my videos. I live next to a Lake and we hear the ice cracking a lot. It's cool!
Been a crazy busy couple years for me and haven't been able to get out at all. Thanks for these videos, lets me be out there in spirit! You don't have the mountains up there but those lakes look special in their own right. Would love to make the trip up there one day. Hope everything is clear in sector 7. Happy new year's to ya👍
WOOO BUDDY!!!!!!! Man its always so unbelievably beautiful up there in the winter. I Can't wait for the day I can sell my house and hopefully find something up around Minnesota.
I had to bail on my 1st winter hang with the club after one night. Sore throat and fever made it a bad idea to tough it out to the next morning and pack up in rain. Here's hoping I make it to Hang Con.
The company is Devold and they are world wide known for the quality of their shirts, sweaters, etc. quite expansive also but made of merino wool can't beat that!
This is the channel I drop everything to watch when a new video comes out. Thanks for letting me live vicariously through you when work keeps me out of the woods!
Love watching you enjoy that morning coffee in your hammock. Looking forward to my first snow camp this winter in my hammock. Thanks for being an inspiration!
It is a Sam Bush tune called "Brilliancy"....been working on it a long time. A tough one. Still trying to nail that tune. Finger-Buster it is. Thankee.
I just listened to that Sam Bush tune. It’s fantastic Shug! You did a great rendition my friend. Thanks again for the wonderful video! I haven’t had a chance to get to woods much this past year..so it’s nice to at least go there in my mind while watching your escapades.
Wish we had weather like this in central North Carolina much more often than we do. My ultimate hammock camping trip would definitely be a snow adventure. Hopefully I get to do that this year. Fingers crossed. Thanks for another fun adventure!
It is a Sam Bush tune called "Brilliancy"....been working on it a long time. A tough one. Thankee. I'm in a big Winter practice phase just to improve for myself.
I've been trying for years to sell the vapor barrier against the skin. Not many takers. I found that plastic bags they use to keep your newspaper dry work good. (Guess that is something from the past - newspapers). Thin disposable plastic food prep gloves work the same way for your hands. My hands and feet sweat a lot and these barriers keep the insulation dry and the extremities warm. Keep up the great adventures.
Much abliged for the beautiful tag along Mr. Emery, and next time you're down in Loozerville look me up at Dinkleberry Lane. It'll be on the left 'cause I ain't never been right. WHOO BUD-DAY!
Shug in the past on cold camp ice climbing trips in northern Ontario I have used soft 1 litre water bottles filled with hot water to warm my climbing boots. If you try it make sure to have good quality water bottle so that they won’t spring a leak on you. And don’t fill the water bottles too full just enough so you can easily slip them down inside toward the toe of the boot
Nice to see some snow. Down here is Louisiana we have been in the mid 80's. Wish I could enjoy some of that cool crisp air you have up there. Nothing like a snack of Special Processed Animal Matter (SPAM), great fried up in the pan.
Great vid shug. I liked the new camera angle on your boil from the hammock shot. Also, I get a huge giggle out of these young “boys” doing all the fire work. Unfortunately I’m usually that guy. But I love it.
It is a real tough tune. Been working on it for a while. I plan to practice a lot this Winter. It is my retirement goal. Just 'cause. For self satisfaction.
Hey Cousin! Love you ~ I’m recovering from long haul Covid Doing well, however! Still on oxygen, but happy to be alive✨ Binged on your videos while bedridden Got me through my days and nights ♥️ Been almost a year in recovery ❤️🩹 Later my redheaded baby cousin ( hope I’m not embarrassing you) but I’m convinced our side of the family/ Emerys are impossible to embarrass 😂
Well my Dear Cousin...keep sucking on that oxygen and get up and at 'em. We were watching "Bye Bye Birdie" on tv and it always makes me think of that time we stayed with ya'll at Aunt Hon's house. Ya'll had gone to see it in Woodruff and I remember everyone singing that song. We went to the beach last month and finally got to spread Kathleen's ashes. Then we had cake and fried oysters. She would have liked that. Loe you too and I think of those times in Enoree often.
@@shugemery awww ~ She would’ve loved that! I’m sure ate an oyster or two right along with y’all ! Lil spitfire Kathleen! Miss lydi mill Give Colleen all my love!
@@shugemery Me too, honoring her! Always herself ♥️ The first I heard her called “Lydi Mill” was your Dad ( you know ) my Uncle Charles😂 I think often on the days y’all were in Enoree! Good days🎵 Happy New Year, to you and yours ~ WITH LOVE
Thanks. Glad Ya'll got out. Shoehorn comes to mind to lessen that struggle with the boot. Well done on the DIY Pop-Tart. Field expedient rations. Spam angels in the snow. Happy Holidays to you and yours. My best to Hickory and the M/K.
Great video Shug! Check out some vapor barrier liner socks from a company called Stephensons WarmLite. Heard about them from a few people at this years Winter Camping Symposium. I've taken them on a couple of jogs on some cold Duluth days and they've done great. Your feet get clammy but never soaked and they keep your outer socks and shoes from getting soaked from perspiration. I've been really pleased with mine so far.
I've looked at that site a lot over the years. The baggies did the trick. It was wet snow so no way to keep the boots dry. Looking forward to colder and dry for mukluks.
You really got good on that mandolin, loved that fly eagle fly song, had to learn that on the Geetar , tried that espresso and took off like a rocket 🚀 nice camp out 🌲
I set a goal for myself to start practicing a lot this Winter to become a better player. Just 'cause. It is a Sam Bush tune called "Brilliancy"....been working on it a long time. A tough one. Thankee.
Good season. Was sorta ready for a break. Gotta put in a lot of time being an F1 fan....FP 1,2 and 3. Quali. Race. Pre-race and post race shows. Love it. Like watching at 6am.
I wonder if the ol' constitutional trowel could double as a shoehorn when boots are frozen? And what a perfect day to use Frosty Morning as a soundtrack! I dub your close-up of the pastry package a Kolonada-scopy. Thank you, as always, for posting!
Shug really enjoyed your video. Mmmm homemade pop tart 👍 Heading into the Mohave Preserve for a day of exploring Thursday looking forward to camping soon. Thanks Shug, hope u sell some cold weather beanies , Shute would like one of those!
The Superior Gear site isn't real clear. My question is: Are you buying a hammock good to 40F and then adding an upgraded underquilt to take the rating down to (say) 0F? Or are you buying a winter only use hammock good to 0F and need another hammock for summer time use? Good trip. Nice to see you getting out and getting some hang time.
We offer the Superior Hammock in 6 temp ratings: 45F, 30F, 15F, 0F, -20F, -40F. Same temp options for our 'Comforter' multi-quilt. In addition, the Comforter can easily snap under the hammock to make it a deep sub-zero setup. Hope that helps!
It is a dedicated 0º hammock as we like to Winter camp. He can add another UQ to it to go colder. He has a 40º Superior Gear Comforter/Underquilt that will snap on to boost it.
We could add up all of the snow we get through winter here in SE Missouri and it might match that. Maybe! Gotta learn to love cold rain down here. Lol. Winter camping is still where it's at though.
Hi shug I watch your video and they expiring me to get out and hammock camping when I go winter camping I use the hand warmer in my boots and I put my socks that I worn in inside my boots to dry them out have a fun time thxs
They get so wet in the snow hiking and we both dry them at the fire as much as we can and spread them open wide but freezing is just a by-product of the winter shoulder wet season that I accept. Soon...mukluk time with day snow and lower temps.
Hey Shugemery why don't you bring with you a plastic cheap shoehorn wouldn't destroy the heel of your boots and would be easier to put on...don't you think? Nice to see you out and about missed your videos since the pandemic, happy trails buddy!
I am also a 64 yr old man that loves to get out in t he woods.I underwent a valve replacement in 2019,so i am working my way back. Thanks for your inspiration!
Nice one Shug. Good to see one of these "first of the season" vids, as the seasons changing are a very different time than in mid-winter. A nice variation. Also I can see how the strategy of hiking with a younger, more energetic buddy can make for a fun trip, especially when setting up camp, fire, etc 😉 I'm going to have a look at those Aclima WookNet tops as I "burn high" on the trail as well & this could be a good regulating option for me. How did you find it all the way through your trip? I'm interested to hear how it worked for you. Cheers 👍
@@shugemery Thanks. Good to know. Think I'll invest in one in the morning. Very much appreciate the feedback, especially as we can relate to the amount of effort & the conditions you;re working in. Gives us a bit of an idea of what might/might not work for us. Cheers, D
This was just what I needed tonight after a “day”. Thanks for the humour & great music to un-wind & de-stress to. Cheers to the Coffee Crisp cocoa! 🥾🏔🇨🇦❤️
Merry Christmas, Shug! Will a Couronne be on the menu this year? I'm thinking of making one again after following your example a couple years ago. It was so good!
I appreciate it. I have been practicing. Wayne Benson's You Tube mando videos have inspired me. Want to get to a better level this Winter. It'll be my focus. Just cause.
