Ray has done that in a previous video so it would not bother him. In the old days when smoking was allowed in the plant a technician was checking out a 9 track computer tape drive and another tech kept blowing smoke into the cabinet.

Being fwd def longer than a truck. In my truck with a seized engine we had the engine out in 4 hrs and the other in 2 hours, thats with a new torque converter and front transmission seal. With 3 people

Well done everyone. I worked in a shop much like yours when I was a student in the UK in the 1970s, at weekends and during holidays, to pay the bills, and it was always a massive relief when, after a rebuild like this one, in those days mostly 3.4 and 3.8 straight six jaguar engines, when you first started it and a) the oil pressure was in the normal range and b) no nasty knocks!

Nice, for loading up the piston rings is good to use a low gear for the first decelerations at low speed and increase the gears with the speed and repeat. If you use the transmission in drive it'll go to coasting as soon as you let off the throttle and the engine will not have the proper rotational speed for good expansion of the rings. What you want is to think that you're driving a big rig downhill and using the Jake brake, that will get you the best results.

I've heard of people using an old garden sprayer - or a new one - to pressurize the engine. The LS 's have a plug that can be used for that purpose. You can also buy a tool for that purpose.

Yep.. like arturos571 said... plug is on driver side if engine is in normal front to rear install. It's near oil pump... Pressurise with the weed sprayer till oil comes out of all the rocker arm oil holes. Turn engine over by hand about 2 times... 45 degrees at a time.... I do it this way. .. works great ! Oil gets everywhere it needs to be...no worries on start up ! No need for a $200 or $300 special pressurizer... good quality ,clean, weed sprayer is great !

One thing I'll note with all the video's I've watched over the years / months of yours and that is your detail you go into with your repair work. Discussions on possible problems if you do things wrong and so forth. I'll be honest and say that I came across these vids when you worked at "That Other Place" and was concerned when you lost your job there. But glad now your on your own and able to do decent repairs (Customers allowing of course) and you explaining everything. I'm glad that all is going so well for you and hopefully you have many MANY years of content to come. Keep up the great work mate !! (Yeah ok so I'm an Ozzie (Australian))

It amazes me the amount of negative comments on Ray's videos. If you dont like what he does go elsewhere, he has stated multiple times he is not an engine builder!! As he is not an engine builder he did a fine job of rebuilding this engine, it runs it drives it has smooth power delivery and doesnt leak. What more do you SUPER PROFESSIONAL ENGINE BUILDERS AND ALL AROUND FANTASTIC MECHANICS WANT?? Y'ALL NEED TO STFU watch the video or dont your choice but dont criticize Ray because he didnt do it the way you wanted it done. Armchair experts are worth as much as a russian ruble. Rant over

Yeah… he dropped the subframe where the suspension parts are attached. As soon as you take that apart… alignment is a must after it is all put back together.

This is going to be a very good comment! I recently bought tires at a Well-known Tire store. While i was there they had a car in bay with the engine out doing extensive repairs. The manager employee i was walking with said they would not be doing any more repairs taking weeks at a time with the bay being held up for a single customer repair, they were losing money. Another recent observation is that some shops are beginning to limit their repairs to vehicles less than ten years old. A recent Facebook post about a guy taking his Toyota Tundra for service he was told take it somewhere else, we don't work on old stuff here. While I'm not a believer in blanket policy I would certainly not have two vehicles at the same time taking shop space forever limiting income the space is capable of providing. I feel like sometimes you get to fix stuff other places pass on because it's not cost effective for their shop. Be mindful you may be getting delt by other shops advising customers to take the difficult stuff to your shop. Everyone gets their share of hard cases but hopefully not at the hands of others unfairly stacking the deck. Your popularity and skill set gives you the discretion to say no to a lot of work that might not be as profitable. On a side note, Last week your comment towards Walmart oil sounded like it may have been less than favorable. Many use their full synthetic Store brand believing it to be good quality. Do you have a problem with Walmart oil? Just curious! After your comment i will be comparing the labels and stats to other brands. Thanks. The test drive to get the rings to seat is crucial but although I agree with your description of why you do it I disagree with your method. When you just lift off of the throttle after acceleration you get very little of the vacuum you are looking for because there is no load on the engine. What you want to do is after acceleration is to drop the transmission into a lower gear so it pulls down the engine and it puts a "reverse" load on the engine. One way to do this super effectively is to bring temperature up to operating range and just put the car in low and just drive around the block several time in low, just accelerate to close to red line or the speed limit and then let off until 10 mph then repeat over and over for about 10-15 cycles. That will guarantee the rings will seat if everything was built right. This is the same way a dyno works for engine break-ins.

Because synthetic oil is so slippery, would you suggest using 5W-30 conventional or a break in oil to help seat the parts in the first 500 miles, then go to a synthetic oil? I was told by the engine builder that synthetic will not let the rings seat properly. What is your thought on that? Thanks.

Hi, Ray! I wonder if you should advise the owner to drive this Monte more than it appears that he does? As we all know, cars need to be exercised regularly to keep things limber and lubricated. They tend to have more issues develop when they sit than they do when they are driven regularly.

It is going to make noises, we know this, we expect this, but still we don't want to hear them. Then when we do hear them, they will be normal noises, but still we fear/dread hearing them. Our brains tell us they are normal, while not quite quelling the doubt. Then the relief comes as the noises gently disappear, and all is well. Then we reassure ourselves that we knew it would be good all along.

when I seen him take the lifters out of that oil bath I was thinking he is doing the same thing I did. LS7 lifters do not like it. I ended it replacing the lifters.
