You are one of the nicest coolest VW guys I've ever seen. Your patience and humor is amazing and the way you interact with your son is awesome. You are a great dad. Thank you for all your great videos.
This Beetle looks awesome for being 64 years old! The engine shouldn't be too hard to fix; this is the kind of technology you can fix with a hammer, a srewdriver, a set of spanners - and that's it! Maybe it needs a new carburettor, a new solenoid, then set the ignition...None of this bloody electronic stuff we have in the cars today!
Thanks for bringing back the memories. So snug in the rear seat of the small rear window beetle. I lost my faith when VW went watercooled! Great video! Watch your #3 valve clearance. Good luck, keep the faith! What can't boil, can't freeze!!
@PeterWIlson, I used to be that way, until a friend of mine, who is even deeper in AirCooled, got a new beetle from his friend who owns a junkyard ! So based on his new love and his recommendation, I bought an 06 with the 2.5 with manual (Convertible), and I love it. Maybe go try one. It's quirky, but has decent power, and still feels like a vw.
Nah! My wife has a yellow 2000 1.8 turbo (New) beetle. It has been fairly reliable and has incredible acceleration and, of course, has heating and airconditioning, but needs premium fuel, synthetic oil, expensive ignition components and has had a whole bunch of quirky problems. The plastic power window doodads, for example, ageing and breaking, dropping the window into the door. And the electrics are worse than the problems air-cooled VW's had when there was a 6 v battery under that rear seat. Old air-cooled Beetles have a distinctive ride because of large wheels and that brilliant torsion bar suspension. With the split rear window and the small rear window models, riding in the back seats also gave you a snug , secure feeling that you just don't get in modern cars, like being in a cave, hard to describe. Homenaje to Ferdinand Porsche.
I gru up with up with vw's my father repaired them my first was a 66 wrecked it. Then a 64 took it to the high school body shop new fenders rockers interior loved that car sold it got a68 Chevy ... Hated it sold it back then got a 67 ready to paint wrecked it. Then a 71super beetal did the body work had it painted sold it got a71 v Bus keep it till I got married loved it brought my first born son with it .good memories.love these old cars keep you're videos up.
every time I see one of these vids it reminds me of when I was 15 working on a 25 dollar VW van. I did get it to run long enough to blow it plumb up when I sprung an oil leak. I knew nothing then. Also sometimes reminds me of my VW square back that was fuel injected.. until that quit. A new fuel pump, lines and all failed to fix it. I traded a motorcycle to a guy for repairing it, it ran just long enough for him to be gone with the bike... then quit again. I about burned it up messing with putting fuel directly into the intake...but even burnt I got as much out of it as I paid for it. (wasn't that much) I really liked that square back when it was right. Always started even in below zero weather, it had one of those gasoline powered heaters that you could actually turn on before you even started the car (it had a timer on it, it would run for ten minutes without the car running) so it was never uncomfortable in the winter, no air so a bit warm on the few really hot summer days we got where I lived in Colorado. I still love VWs but don't own one now. They're too pricey now if they're in decent shape. Hell, it's hard to find a bug or van that's drivable and unmolested. They're either piles of rust or have had all kinds of nasty things done to them. A few years ago, I went to a car show, not a huge one, there were old classics, resto mods, hot rods, and all sorts of things. What car got the most attention, a bone stock, unmolested VW bug. I was checking it out very closely myself. the lady that owned it was surprised it was getting so much attention. I just told her how rare one that's bone stock is, and how hard they are to find these days. My wife at the time ticked me off, we had a chance to buy an unmolested very nice VW window van for a good price, she didn't want it cuz it didn't have power steering, and since it was her money from a settlement, I couldn't manage to persuade her otherwise. we wound up buying a junker olds that looked nice but only ran for like a month.
oh the window van was automatic not my first choice but hey, if that alone would have placated her, it would have been worth the trade off. I once ran across a VW Bug in a body shop I was working at that had an automatic. I didn't get it, at the time, why anyone would want or need an automatic.
ahhh , the $25 dollar Vw van .....I remember selling my 71 semi auto Bug for 75 bucks thinking I did ok on it lol .Good stories , thank you for sharing , sounds like you had as many cars as i did when i was young :)
@@5150mxVW my next car wasn''t what I wanted, it was what my folks would let me buy. I wanted an old econoline van, but they wouldn't sign for it... I was sixteen they still had to sign.. but they would sign for a 1965 Galaxie 500 four door... now just what did they think I could do in a van and not a large four door car? I could do anything but make money with it, a guy can always find a way to make money with a van or pickup truck.
This VW is in excellent condition. Every time you would start it I had my finger crossed for you. Your awesome on these car's love watching all your vidios... keep them rolling!
@@5150mxVW That's Awesome. The mice get in there destroy every thing! Do you take car's Build them from nothing for customers? All was wanted a beetle 🐞
haha ! Oh man , how long does it take after getting your first hitch to remember it's on ? I wasn't the fastest learner on that , DOHHHH....thank you Brent , have a great weekend
Early on,you can hear the 'easy' cylinder that probably has a stuck open valve.hope it warms up and snaps shut. Ive had one stuck open, started it up,didn't clear up ,so I shut it off and after a few minutes,I heard a 'ping'. As soon as I ground it over, the sound of all compression was uniform and it sat and idled good . I also fill the bowl thru the vent tube. That pulley rust can destroy a fan belt pretty quick.A drill with a stiff wire wheel cures it fast. Thats a real jewel! I love it!
My first car a 56 VDub. 36 horse, reliable, great in snow with heat that was more theory then fact. That's an outstanding starting point. Always a fan favorite to try to get one of these things sitting round forever to start but it's pure showmanship. You always end up pulling it, going through it and why not. The cars are worth an lot and those old engines with cast iron heads relatively easy to freshen up. 36, 40 horse whatever. Get the thing going down even a modest hill and it would fly. Just a lot of fun to drive and bullet proof mechanically.
I traded a $150.00 stereo for a 1956 vw bug w/sunroof, the same as in this video, in my senior year in HS 1972 in Kailua, Hawaii. there were lots of VW's back then, from the 60's. I ended up selling it for $500 after it was modefied with a 67 trans and 67 engine. I bet they're worth a fortune now. I also had a chance to buy a 1956B Porshe convertible speedster for $1,600 in 1973, from original owner, I blew it, my uncle never came to pick me up to go and buy it and someone else beat me to it. I still regret depending on my uncle for a ride to go and buy it. Lesson learned, never depend on anyone for anything! You want something done, do it yourself.
@@5150mxVW i did 12miles on my Raleigh aero pro other day, along the welsh coastline.it felt like 50 miles ha ha a a few cool beers afterwards sorted me out
Thanks for the great video Jay and that thing runs good to so that means your out doors after all good stuff so take care cant wait for the next one ...Thanks
I remember when I worked at a shop, I got a 56’ oval to run with the OG 36hp engine. I’ve worked on so many engines but I don’t know why I liked that little engine so much.
Wow that was a thoroughly good One Bourbon One Scotch and one beer. Motor sounds pretty damn good man I'm glad you got to run in and I am glad that you share this video with us thank you so much. Stay safe stay well and as always God bless
You always have the best luck finding sweet VW's. Up north must be swimming in them, here in Florida you only see a VW every once and a while. When I was 12yrs old I had a 1963 i drove to my friends house about 2 miles from where I lived. I miss that ole car.
I got back into them in 2014 and went to all the Vw honey holes and back yard bugs I remembered from the late 80's and early 90's , only the a few cars were still around . They used to be everywhere back then , i swear every 3rd house had one in the backyard then haha. 12 years old :), time to find a 63👍....I have a ruby red 63 coming this week....
An older man had this car with the same black color, in absolute mint condition when I was growing up in the 70s. He used to drive it on Beechwood blvd in Pittsburgh on nice summer days. Probably was within a year of '56.
Great find just found your channel I think these vids will help me tremendously peace and love bug lover, I hope to find car like that one day never had oval but a couple 59s love the black with two tone red white interior classic beauty I bet she was a centerfold in her day tasteful spread im sure, she was a tease but she wants to get down to it and be ridden again, driven again pardon me. Great car love it.
That young man is going to impress folks one day when he walks up to someone with a car problem, takes the trailer hitch off of a truck, whacks it, and says "Ok, it's fixed." Well done, sir. Well done.
@@5150mxVW Yes, but the trailer hitch just makes a better story. He'll be tooling around in one of your VW's one day while everyone else is paying thousands of dollars to have their Tesla batteries replaced. :-)
I SHARE YOUR PASSION...... I have a near perfect '57 from the original owner and a very clean '67 from the second owner. My VW history is '57 Oval, '69 Bug, '69 Baja, '68 Westfalia, '73 Thing and the two I currently have. I was bitten by a bug a long time ago. 🪲
This is still a German car, no whisky but only beer, a nice Einbecker. Engine should be a 1.2-liter 30hp, if bigger it is a newer engine. Beetles always start, my old one used to start even at -27°C on the first try! Best regards from Germany.
That bug is 6 months younger than me, how I would love another beetle, I had a '74 1200 and my wife had a '73 1300 back in the days before the internet and mobile phones.....sadly lack of space and cash flow prevents this...................atb from England
I was in the VW scene during the early 90s, and a fella could pick-up an OK bug for 800 bucks from the mid to late 60s, if you were willing to drive to Wisconsin (lived in St Paul, MN). But......the holy grail... An Oval from the 50s couldn't be found easily. I can't even image finding something like that in 2020. Nice find, I'm glad you found it, as you've got the vibe. I will always regret selling my 65 because my wife told me "we don't have the space".........what a mistake.
Mmm, the B code 1600 single ports are my favourite. 1970 only. The 30 Pict3 works very well with the original vacuum distributor as found on your second engine. In fact much better than that 009 in the Oval could ever do...
V-Dub motors are so straightforward, I get why people like them. I mean, I do too, but first I have to deal with my Classic Fiat Panda and Series Land Rover obsessions ... and buy a longer drive/bigger garage...sigh. Love your vids, mate.
@@5150mxVW YUGO!? How very dare you, sir! Fiat Pandas are a gift from the Gods, and are/were top quality and fast little rocket ships, only let down by their being allowed to rust away over the years. I'm a whale, but fit in it easily and it's like driving a go-kart, but with room for the dogs in the back.!
drove a yellow 1971 beetle to Colorado from NY. in high school i owned a red 1963 with a cloth sun roof . driving the 71 in the Rockies, it was slow around 35 mph. slept in the 71 going cross country
