That's why I recommend people have a hobby they are passionate about ready to go before they retire. When you stop doing and start sitting, that's when things start sucking the life out of you. Also, it is a vulnerable time and post retirement depression can get you if you find yourself not knowing what to do with yourself.
I can’t believe we get to witness an entirely new chapter of not only diesel performance and innovation but automotive engine history being made. What an incredible team you guys are, thank you for sharing.
You do know that superchargers originated on diesels, then they moved into the petrol world via Hot Rodding. This is in no way a new thing or a radical new idea to put a blower on a diesel, even in more recent times
I think Mr. Banks almost cried, I almost cried. Cant wait to see how fast it is. Sounds like no other with such free flowing intake and magic looking headers.
Congratulations to Gale and his crew for an amazing accomplishment with his Dirtymax Engine! When my father attended Diesel Mechanics class in 1961, his instructor said they would never create a diesel engine that turned more than 2k RPM'S..I can't wait to show him this unbelievable Monster!
As a teenager of the 80's and an avid Motorweek fan, to this day remember I believe a segment on a Bank's turbo GMC Suburban. It was instant love at first sight.....
Gales expressions were priceless, his commentary was as honest as I have ever heard. It’s amazing all the preparation and engineering that has went into this project, but when it actually runs and works, it makes it all worth while. Mr Banks is my engineering hero. Thanks so much for sharing your time and videos.
You know you have something special when Gale chokes for a second. Seeing how elated he is for this engine. I guess its true if you love your job, you'll never work a day in your life.
Holly cow the response on this beast was incredible for a diesel, I drive semi's for a living and never ever has a diesel responded with crisp punctual response like this! Mr Banks and his team has set a bar so high those cummings and powerstroke fellas will be left scratching there heads down to the bone trying to copy this setup!! Well done! Well done! I had wanted a diesel pickup now I really want a Gale Banks Duramax truck!!! Release the smack down I can't wait to see the numbers this monster is going to put down wow!! History has been made fellas and we all witnessed it here today!!!
Uh why would anyone with a cummins or powerstroke want to copy this? Im sure with a little searching you can find cummins and powerstrokes that have been supercharged, maybe not with this much investment and technology involved but nonetheless. I can guarantee no matter what "numbers this monster is going to put down". There are multiple cummins and powerstrokes that put down more. No I don't hate duramax or any other diesel brand but I can guarantee that this isn't going to do anything special as far as numbers go.
Manufacturers are interested in fuel efficiency, meeting EPA regulations, and meeting warranty cost limits, and therefor have absolutely no interest in supercharging... And to get absolute peak horsepower, you get further with turbocharging because the power you use to drive the supercharger is taken from the crankshaft, which is therefor loaded higher than a turbocharged engine with the same horsepower. I.e. mechanical strength limits are met sooner with supercharging than with turbocharging.
@@jbowen1831 Well I disagree totally. While there are many diesels that may appear to match or exceed the power output of Bank’s diesel, they will do so with heavy smoke and high EGT’s, and almost none will have the throttle response of this monster. This engine has what I call predictable, reliable power and torque, while maintaining longevity. No other diesel builder designs this much longevity and reliability while building an engine. Extreme thought and care was given to this build, while most builders think that smoke is the way to show power, all while flushing efficiency down the toilet.. Banks is the best and will continue to be the best. Banks didn’t say this would put out the most, because lots of other builders have more powerful engines, but they get destroyed in multiple runs. Have you heard the term heat-soaked? That’s because there’s not enough air density to cool the whole intake system and powertrain, and the excess heat from combustion radiates through the entire engine, eventually robbing power from it. I’m sure Bank’s diesel will have repeatable numbers time after time after time on the track and won’t suffer much from heat soaking.
That might be the best sounding diesel I've ever heard! I'm a "gas engine" guy, don't get me wrong, I do like & respect most diesel engines. I just never really cared for the low rpm's of diesel engines. But now this engine, "sounds" like is revving up to gas engine rpm levels. Great job Gail and team! I bet that was a nerve racking moment for your team during that first startup! 😅
absolutely insane! I love it. been waiting for an update and was not disappointed. amazing craftsmanship across the board. cant wait to see what it does on the first drive.
It's a great sound and super throttle response for any motor, although unexpected from a diesel... but this is a Banks project so surprises are no surprise.
Holy cow! I've been waiting for this for SO long! That was incredible! My goal is to someday have one of these crate engines in an early 2000s 8-lug Suburban sending power to all four wheels through an AWD transfer case. That would be EPIC! I CANNOT wait until you all show this thing in action! Keep up the great work, guys!
How long has it been since Gale had the same feeling from something he built? Ever? Seeing him so stoked makes me stoked. Ya think we could rent him? Just to hang out with. Lol
Sounds amazing. You can actually hear the true Duramax exhaust note. Instead of hearing a Turbo. Also I hope Banks develops a Centrifugal Super Charged kit also because those pro chargers sound Kool too.
@@MV-ri7zu That’s not how that works. It’s not like a turbo where you build full boost pressure at a set rpm. Centrifugal superchargers all build boost directly linear to engine rpm. If you put a super small pulley to build boost early it would either destroy itself when it got to higher rpm’s or the pulley would slip, whichever came first.
Ever since the first D-max I worked on, I've wondered how a supercharged ONLY dmax would sound. I knew banks made a super-turbo charged engine, but turbo quiets the exhaust down. This was awesome! Thanks everyone who worked on it.
Had I watched this blindfolded and not heard Gale's voice for the expo, just the engine, I would not have called that right for being a diesel, Ever. Holy crapballs, that thing RIPS!
Funnest thing I've ever heard Gale Banks say was on the topic of nitrous. "If you're trying to add power with just using nitrous get a better job or do better in your career and go forged induction."
Absolutely beautiful. My 1964 3/4 ton Chevy that I have had since 1971 will be done this year. The truck never got to Lockjaw condition, with 40,000 mi but with a 498 BBC N.A. it will still be fun to drive. I have been following your fantastic build and look forward to see it drive. Thank you for all the passion you put into your projects.
Gale Banks is an American Hero. Sadly I am probably gonna be team electric from here on out for lower OPEX but damn, it will never give me the visceral love this engine just did. also I love my tuner/throttle setup in my diesel gladiator. Thanks Banks!
VARROOOOOOM! That sucka crackles! Hope your other "blurry " projects leave you and Eric time for more LockJaw content! Nice engineering on that cold side pressure relief. FR
Bringing superchargers back better than ever. Let’s make supercharged the standard on factory boosted diesels and gassers. Turbos have been overplayed.
That is an awesome looking truck I got. My first diesel is a 1986 F250 duly with a 6.9. In it and I'm hoping to be able to get it fixed up. Hopefully, I don't have nobody experinch. I've been watching a lot of Gale banks's videos And rely on all my wife to help me with the reading problems. But I like watching the videos and listening to Gale. Talk about the different turbos. This truck has a bank's Sidewinder square air breather. System on it aint been started and over 10 years. I got my work cut out for me. Gale Thanks for all your videos. I really enjoy them.
Gale Banks 5.9 Cummins Turbo Diesel!! I wish he could have made my 94 4x4 Light Duty Wrecker more efficient with power but also fuel mileage. Just a dream!!
Gale Banks is a National Treasure! I sure hope someone in his circle is cataloging all of his stories, achievements, and knowledge. He has engineered more horsepower (energy) than the Big Bang!
Wow! If anyone ever questioned Gale Banks and his team didn’t have total mastery over Diesel performance, this will shoot that down. A diesel that revs like a modified small block? Insane. Can’t wait to see the numbers it’ll put down.
Gale is like a kid with new toys! And he’s a mechanical genius too. He got me laughing when he had that significant spiritual event. No turbines in the way and the sound was like no other. When I score my next Durtymax I certainly want it to have the Banks treatment! Love this channel
Gale you an your team just killed it a diesel that sounds an responds just like a promod 👍👍 always been a gasser an diesel workhorse but now I'm extremely impressed that torque monster with that throttle response oh baby #001 off the line 👍
Truck is unreal. I'm a truck guy .I worked there for over 20 years I was working an a 65 short bed with Bobby. He and Rick L called it a farm truck. But that's ok. Gale knows his stuff
Thanks Mr. Banks!! When you get done tuning every molecule for the best M.A.D. there's nothing left for the EPA mandated exhaust to filter or convert! 🤔 Good clean fun! Except for a lot of tire smoke! Thanks for making diesel engines great again! and - again! Keep it up! Trying to wear out my LBZ so I can install your new L5Banks!? crate engine!
I bought a new duramax just to get this engine!! I always had fords and rams but went duramax this year just waiting to exchange for one of these 🤞🏼 please god 🙏🏻
