Way to go Steve! You've made one great choice too many. Hats off! You are one of my favorite RU-vidrs to watch; hands down. So, that said turning to Hellenic: «εύγε!Συγχαρητήρια για την επιλογή σου. Είσαι ένας αξιοθαύμαστος άνθρωπος, χωρίς αμφιβολία. Η δική σου προσπάθεια είναι μια έμμεση τόνωση της δικής μας περηφάνιας. Χαιρετισμοί από την όμορφη Ελλάδα.» Cheers from Hellas dear Friend across the pond!

It's very good choice! Greek is my favorite language and I'm also learning it now. I use Pimsleur Greek and I think it's very good for it. 30 mins a day and after 30 days I (one) can speak basic Greek. At least it's not a waste of time and it's very efficient

Is that possible to know how to achieved that level to speak it? I'm learning everyday but still struggle! Even if I enjoy the process!

Μπράβο Στίβ !! Hi Steve, I am a born/raised Greek living in Greece, so feel free to write any Greek lines, and I'll try to correct some of those. Keep up the great work. Bye from Greece

Neueregel, I have a doubt about the Biblical and modern Greek, is it different? Can you read the original Bible that was writen in Biblical Greek even though you speak the modern Greek?
@julissaonfleek3136
@julissaonfleek3136 7 лет назад
Neueregel does "yashu" means hello? Wondering
@panoC97
@panoC97 7 лет назад
Julissaonfleek Yia means hello, Yia sou literally means hello to you. Avoid using the ''sh'' sound because there is not an ''sh'' sound in Greek.
@panoC97
@panoC97 7 лет назад
Tut Ank Amun It's not that different. You can understand way more than 30% of the Bible using just Modern Greek. Probably around 70% or even higher. Vocabulary is basically the same, the only thing that changes a bit is the grammar.
@panoC97
@panoC97 7 лет назад
Tut Ank Amun I think older people would still be able to understand more than 30% though. It's not like it's a completely different language. And also yes you are right, yia sou literally means health to you, I was highlighting the ''sou'' part which means ''to you''.

Robert Æsir Hahahahahhaha For me its the same thing. I had already learned english and I rechead, after that, B1 intermediate (between b1 and b2) in german. I'm on the peak that you need to get so much input in the language in order to achieve vocabulary and know the normal daily-life sentences... I just started greek today, cause I think being fluent in german is now a matter of time and effort spended.
@voyagingthroughtoretirment6950
Hi Steve, I'm native Hebrew speaker so happy to hear you r going to study it, And I just started mandarin so I'm interested in these videos, I can get ideas from what you're doing. I study in a similar way to yours - I would try to get to interesting content as soon as I can (with chinese characters it would probably more so podcasts than reading though...), I skip deep grammar, I skip vocabulary like big sister little sister - those are for later... I started with pimsleur in the car, memrise at home and some beginners podcasts on my cellphone for when I walk... but you reminded me of living language and I found them too in my library so will check it out!! Thanks ---> בהצלחה :)

If you've studied Russian and Ukrainian, then the Greek alphabet will look very familiar to you. I have the Complete Living Language courses for German, Arabic, Mandarin and Korean. They all get into talking about relatives. Pimsleur is mostly a spoken series, but in the Arabic courses they have reading units with MP3s which gently introduce you to reading Arabic. I think you'll pick up Greek fairly quickly and easily.

I hope this is received with the tone I intend it to; I am really enjoying seeing your Greek being at such a low level. Considering how advanced your level is many languages from what looks like very procedural and logical study is hugely motivating for people like me just starting a language. All the best with your studies!

I think they do colors, relatives, etc because it's just so easy to make a list. it's hard to make a course where you resist making lists.

Finding this 7 years later, in 2024. 😁 I am also learning modern Greek now, I have been using Duolingo for it for 190 straight days. It is quite interesting, it is my first time using the app, and I have learned quite a lot (and nowadays you are not forced to write with the Greek alphabet, but you can if you want to; otherwise, just pick the words from a list, as I have been doing). I can see that there is a limit of proficiency there, but I haven't gotten to it yet. One interesting thing: I am Brazilian but I have to take the course in English, since this language is not available in my native language. Usually, that is all the same to me, since I am fluent in English. But I have noticed that the overall sentence structure (and some other things) of Greek is more similar to that of Portuguese than to English! So I believe I would be learning faster if the app had Greek lessons for Portuguese speakers... But I guess I'll never know.

I 100% agree. Language textbooks always start off with the most useless material when trying to teach someone how to speak. First off, I'm colorblind (English is bad about describing this, it's more like how Chinese describes color-weak), and in my everyday life, I rarely talk about color. Most people don't even have color come up in their everyday discussions. So why do textbooks do this? It is easy. A stupid answer. I want to speak the language, not waste my time in the beginning. This is why I LOVE LingQ. I think your website is fantastic for learning a language, so thank you for creating this resource. It has certainly been a fantastic supplement to my language studies in college.

Steve, quick question: When you read in a new language, EG Greek as in this video, and you slowly read the word so for example 'we are looking', as you figure out what that means, out loud or in your head or whatever are you saying it in Greek and purposely not connecting the English translation or is it perfectly fine to say 'ahhh blablabla- we are looking'? Hope that's clear enough to understand

Hey Steve, how does your ability to understand come to you? Do you usually notice a gradual understanding of what you're hearing or do you just suddenly notice one day that you can understand the language? I ask this because I've heard from numerous sources that one day you just notice that you're understanding what you hear; but I don't know how true that is.

Hey, I don't know if you will see this Steve but I am currently using a website called Memrise. I don't know if you have heard of it before it is similar to online flashcards and Anki, except it also allows you to hear dialogue and visual cues and reminders for the words you are remembering I would recommend you check this out if you haven't already!

I have been studying Koine Greek. It was the Lingua Franca in ancient Rome until Latin came into popularity and beat it out. My goal is to read a great deal of the literature that was written in Koine while it was the the International Language. It was an interesting time period.

Hey Steve, when will "who is she" be available in Hebrew in LingQ? I really like the series, I'm using it on Greek and found it really helpful. Thanks!
@Thelinguist
@Thelinguist 7 лет назад
We need some people to step up and provide enough content to make Hebrew a supported language. The same is true for any language that we don't support right now. I hope it happens by the time I get on to Hebrew.
@Thelinguist
@Thelinguist 7 лет назад
Here is what LingQ says about adding supported languages. We are regularly asked to add new languages to LingQ. We would love to have all languages on the site but we find that without a certain critical mass of content, new languages are not successful on the site. Therefore, we have decided that we will add new languages only if members can provide that solid base of content required for a language to be successful. We require the following to add a new language:2 audio hours of Beginner lessons5 audio hours of Intermediate lessons5 audio hours of Advanced lessons These lessons may be original content or third party content for which permission to share has been obtained. Only courses with high audio quality and matching text along with quality images and descriptions will be accepted. If you believe you have gathered enough material to meet these requirements please contact us.If a language qualifies to be added we will translate and record our LingQ beginner courses and add the language as a supported language.

Greek vocabulary is not as foreign as it seems at first sight for an English speaker, provided that you know the etymology. For example: "pandremenos" = married. "Totally unrelated to English" you'll think. Wrong. "pandremenos" comes from "ypo" + "andras" + "-menos". "Ypo", spelled as "hypo-" in English, means under, as in hypodermic. "Andras" means man, as in andrology. "-menos" is the ending for passive participles, which are used as adjectives. The explanation is that when a woman got married, she went socially (and physically) under the man! The corresponding verb is "pantrevome". Originally it was only used for women, but nowadays it is used for both sexes.
