Farmer N'Da Alphonse grows cocoa and has never seen the finished product. "To be honest I do not know what they make of my beans, " says farmer N'Da Alphonse. "I've heard they're used as flavoring in cooking, but I've never seen it. I do not even know if it's true."
VPRO Metropolis is a video project by Dutch broadcast organization VPRO, that started in 2008. Metropolis is made by a global collective of young filmmakers and TV producers, reporting on remarkable stories from their own country or city.

In a sense it is. But its also to be expected. Almost all of us in the west live in luxuary today. Like kings could only dream of in the past. We see things from high up in our towers of luxuary and make our opinions on the world based on what we see from up high. It makes it very hard for us to grasp how its like to be down on the ground in the real world. It is also why I find it so flawed when we make rules and morals that we expect other countries to follow where people do not live in the same towers we do. Just that we think that stuff should be fair alone is an extreamly flawed view as I see it. That everyone should live as kings. That is just way too deep into fantasy. That people do not have it the same, that people are not set as well as others. Its not fair... its reality. Its life.

@@anonymousstout4759 honestly I dont give a fuck if chocolate gets more expensive for a while if it means people millions of people are helped out of poverty. What we need to do is to stop our governments and corporations from coming in and stealing their resources and exploiting their workforce. We dont have any right to do that to them so if the only way to have cheap junk food (that we dont even need) is to exploit and occasionally invade and kill them the I feel like we should be willing to make that sacrifice. Cheap chocolate (among a bunch of other useless things westerners take for granted) is not worth worldwide poverty, hunger, and warfare
@Madly_Zen
@Madly_Zen 4 года назад
Something tells me you don’t know much about how corporations work, no matter your opinion they won’t stop taking resources because they technically are following the buy/trade market. Also if you prohibited the government/corporations from taking cocoa from these people or even made it more expensive it would do more harm than good as a majority of these people wouldn’t be needed since less people can buy chocolate meaning that 3/5 men that you saw in this video went from making 7 euro a day to 0 euro a day, and even if it did work it would disrupt the economy on both sides which isn’t good for anyone. If we were to impose things they would need to be done slowly over the period of years to prevent an economic collapse or even higher poverty rate to their country

'What a privilege to taste it.' What an attitude towards life. He has just tasted the end product the rich make from his poorly paid hard work and instead of jealousy for the ones that get to produce and consume this product, he feels gratitude to be introduced to something new, and to truly understand the fruits of his labour. Bruh Moments I think I have a good explanation for this. For black people it's because they're not surrounded by rich people. And they were born with it and used to it. For them it's normal. Like, rich people don't have infinite happiness you know? Rich people also get used to the wealth and see it as normal for them eventually. And for "white" poor people, you mean poor people in 1st world countries. They're not always sad though, because they're used to it.

msc14111990 you tend to be unhappier when you can see that the people around you are doing far better. For most in poverty, because all their friends and neighbours are poor, they enjoy the little things together. Difference in wealth usually sparks jealousy and envy and no matter how rich or how poor they are, the chances of someone stealing is far greater if they see that someone nearby has a better life than them. We may enjoy many privileges living in more developed countries but we also have a lot of different hardships which they won’t have to suffer.

I feel sad after I watched the video. I am Korean, my family was lived in poverty when I was a child. I was typical ordinary child like my neighbours, old friends who loves adores eating chocolate. When my mom gave me some pocket money, I had run to a store to buy a bar of chocolate with my friends. My memories of childhood wasn't so good, however chocolate... it was exception. It was my story from 25 years ago. Now chocolates can be found everywhere. Every people can buy chocolates with small money. Doctors are warning about abusing of chocolate, candies, coffees. In other side, people who cultivate raw material of chocolate haven't taste chocolate yet. It makes me sad :/

Jack Robinson They made them poor on purpose. To keep raw material cost low and make them uneducated. It is really not possible for a cocoa farmer not to know chocolate not unless it is done on purpose. Once they learn how to make chocolate then learning it's a multi-billion industry, they too can achieve the same thing locally at a smaller scale. 1st world country is trying hard to prevent it from happening so they can stay as high and almighty. Example: My country harvest and makes the final product which are rubber shoes. It is then exported to the states, stamp brand and will cost $40-100 U.S Dollar a pair. ...BUT without the brand names, the shoe is already been made and is ready for selling which cost $2-5 U.S Dollar. Those unbranded shoes can be classified "Generic" and its final price depends on the brand name it gets. This is the reality of business and how they control the planet. You think this is some conspiracy theory? do your own research by visiting those factories and farms where they get the raw material.

While this video might show that one lifestyle isn't necessarily the right lifestyle for everyone, it also illustrates the geopolitical disparity of wealth, yet the connectedness of the markets; it shows how affluent nations rely on poorer nations for resources; it's a reminder that we have access to so many products and they have access to so little. Despite the overall positive vibe the video may give us, the video depicts the consequences of globalization and exploitation - that is the stunted growth of a culture, a lack of a self-sustaining economy, a vulnerable way of life (poor, uneducated, and susceptible to global warming), and the acquisition of Africa's resources via imperialism.
@vsevolodi.5373

meking yup I have a guess, that the fact that someone doesn't even know how products of his life time labor is used for have something to do with his overall wealth.

meking yup Wealth can not be generated without smart ideas, inspiration and curiosity, regardless of which society or time period you are looking at. If some countries, nations, cities or whatever aggregations of people you looking at are in worse (or in better) conditions than other ones, that might have something to do with lack of those qualities. And it seems that those guys from video dont think much about what they do their entire life.

+Buttersnips Are you a progressive? Because that's the progressive mindset. "Others should provide for me!" Life has no meaning if God gives you everything. He gave us the tools to make our own utopia, whether we do or not is up to us. They live on the wealthiest continent on earth. They have the same capacity for learning as europeans or asians. They can make all the same tools, all the same innovations. They can construct grand factories to produce chocolate. They have all the tools. To expect anything more from God than the ability to succeed is just arrogance and entitlement. Work a little.

When they say healthy they mean fat. In those countries that's what they call it because it's a privilege to have enough food to be overweight. It means you are well to do and "healthy."
