I love the concept of this RV. I think it will definitely be a game changer down the road. I look forward to learning more about the various water capacities and some of the other details. Once concern I have is ground clearance. It really doesnt look like it will be able to get you very far off road. Good job Lightship in your first concept of what an RV should be. I really look forward to seeing what else you guys come up with.

Definitely like the idea behind this. I think a lot of us can appreciate that this is going to be one of the most if not the most efficient trailer option available right now. I also like that because it compacts down it could theoretically fit into a standard height garage (though you may need a much longer garage than initially expected). Also appreciate your explanation on how it assists, I thought with how it was explained that it would charge the EV while driving, but this is still an incredibly helpful way of going about things. Thinking some charge stations may need to begin setting themselves up to charge not just the car / truck but a trailer as well.
@AllElectricFamily
@AllElectricFamily Год назад
I think you're right...I think we will start seeing a lot more trailers with batter packs to assist in driving/towing, so it would be helpful to have charging stations set up to accommodate charging both! I think an extension cord for fast charging could be an easy solution as well...and help out in other situations when the chargers cord isn't long enough, which we have run into just trying to charge our car before!
@swanny6627

I think it's intended to live outside when parked at home. May as well use the solar and integrate with the house, as well as use its battery with V2H or at least as a home backup battery
@jonatamaniuk
@jonatamaniuk Год назад
@@swanny6627 definitely don’t disagree it is probably intended to live outside. That said, some places present challenges when trying to store an RV outside (be it local bylaws or a “delightful” HOA). If it is able to fit in a garage, even better. Otherwise it just has to hang out at a storage location.

I've only just now heard of the Lightship L1, and I already love it. I can see my self towing it out and camping with it using my F150 Lightning. I would like to see some tweaks to it, but it looks like they've put a lot of thought into it already. I just have to wait and watch and hope I can get one.

Great channel! I have loved Airstreams for many a moon. I have in the last few years , passionately followed Living Vehicle & also Bowlus ( the OG silver bullet travel trailer). I admire Living Vehicle EV luxury travel trailers & have watched each year their changes / upgrades ( solar awning , water maker, tech ,etc). Then I see Bowlus come out with the Volterra & get excited about this model…all the while watching/ reading anything & everything about Airstream Estream . The prices for Living Vehicle & the premium Bowlus are only for a select few $. I saw a more basic (but still elegant) Bowlus has been announced ( somewhat better price). So, then I’m watching your channel & you reference Lightship (new to me) & suddenly I see articles & videos about this upstart new & modern travel trailer company. I then saw ( yesterday ) an Airstream / Porsche design team concept that is compact & yet has plenty of bells & whistles/ tech. I sense your enthusiasm for the Lightship & it looks promising. The price seems pretty fair overall & the wrap around panoramic windows & tech make it attractive. Thx ✌️

@AllElectricFamily Год назад
Thank you very much! Glad you're enjoying the channel. We have looked into Bowlus and would be interested in comparing its efficiency to our Airstream, but have never seen one in person! We haven't ever heard of Living Vehicle EV but will check that out! Thanks for watching!

How will the motor on the trailer know to assist the tow vehicle? Will it have a communication cable that also gets attached to the tow rig? It will have to see throttle position somehow, will there be a retro fit for older vehicles and for ICE vehicles? You did mention towing with an eco boost.
@AllElectricFamily
@AllElectricFamily Год назад
I believe the trailer will make the decision to assist on its own. I'm not entirely sure how, but it seems that it would be too difficult to make it communicate with all the different vehicles out there! We didn't mention an eco boost directly, but this would help an eco boost drive forever!
@teresawalker4492
@teresawalker4492 Год назад
The purchase of an RV is an exercise in finding the right features and benefits to fit your needs while considering how you will use it. Hi-low trailers, despite enormous towing advantages, have not been popular. The reasons are many; no slides, lack of walls, and privacy issues. The L1 is a huge leap foward because it allows for more tow vehicle choices. Success in the market place, however, depends on if it can fulfill how people want to use them.

@eileenhunter5927
@eileenhunter5927 Год назад
I think there will be a market for it for those that can afford it. We are getting a Safari Condo Alto F2114 because of its light weight and aerodynamic design and it can be towed by our MYLR (and Rivian R!S when we get it) but the Lightship will be more limiting due to its weight (unless the weight isn’t as much as a factor due to its ability to power itself down the road.) A little too modern for my taste but would love the windows. I wonder how efficient it will be in the heat or extreme cold due to the windows. Curious how large the beds are. I hope this new technology becomes available to those of us that can’t afford (or which to spend) 6 figures on an RV. Very exciting concept though!

What a very cool and aerodynamic design. Can't wait to see AEF video pulling their Lightship L1 with their Cybertruck. You mentioned the Lightship has an electric motor that helps with the towing. I would like to hear more about that. Can you charge the Lightship at a fastcharger? Maybe too many questions for now. So did you put any money down to get one of the first ones. Thanks for showing the Lightship L1.

Technical question - the video shows the camper being hauled Offroad - if the towing vehicle gets bogged down / stuck in a dangerous situation while pulling a “self propelled” trailer what safety mechanisms are there built into the trailer to cut the drive to avoid pushing the towing vehicle further into danger/ difficulty?
@AllElectricFamily
@AllElectricFamily Год назад
My understanding is the trailer is designed to not apply force to the tow vehicle. It shouldn’t ever be pushing the tow vehicle.

We did put a deposit on one. We love our current Airstream as well, but this could be a game changer for long-distance trips, especially if you want to get there fast! It's also hands down better for boondocking with an EV.

@@AllElectricFamily well after watching your video I thought about the “no propane, AC running off of solar / batteries, charging my EV” features and decided to jump back in LOL! Let’s see what the end of 2024 brings. Hopefully this won’t be a “wait 4 years for a Rivian” type of scenario…
@FreedomToRoam86

Love the concept. I wonder if the former engineers from Tesla will suffer the same pricing issues from Tesla where the original estimate was X, and actual retail price ends up being (x + $50,000) At a $200k price point I think it will be a much tougher conversation

@AllElectricFamily
@AllElectricFamily Год назад
There will be a lot to consider! I really appreciate that Airstream is also coming to this market--it's like Ford making the Lightning, for some people to appreciate it an established and quality brand will need to be in the game as well. As far as details, we believe the heating/air conditioning unit will be a mini-split. It will have a convection microwave, electric hot water heater (don't know specifics on what kind) and I know for sure the windows will be tinted and I believe dual pane, but I'm not entirely sure on that. I'll try to have Steve find out this weekend!

I don't like the long overhang off of the back of the trailer. I can see dips damaging the underside. Now if that isn't any worse than any other trailer out there then it might be ok. Also having to raise and lower the roof is that going to be a problem if you just want to make a quick sandwich. I hope they will put a large enough air conditioner in it to cool the trailer where everything is hidden hopefully the A/C can disapate the heat. Have you looked at the Airstream eTrailer concept yet. I would like to see some reviews about it

@cherrytreepermaculture756
@cherrytreepermaculture756 Год назад
I'm daydreaming about a mobile, decentralized fleet of EVs and EV trailers, used bi-directionally as grid storage when plugged in. Since something like this would be parked most of the time, for most people, it seems perfect for that. In the future, I see several possibilities for this. Either the government/utility company could pay battery owners per KW as the battery is used for grid storage, or there could be a co-operatively owned company of EV owners who choose to supply the grid as necessary and share the profits.
@cherrytreepermaculture756
@cherrytreepermaculture756 Год назад
Back of the envelope math estimate: there are about 240 GW of battery-on wheels in Teslas alone. If these were used as grid storage when not driving, this would go a long way to levelling out the inconsistency of renewable production.
@AllElectricFamily
@AllElectricFamily Год назад
Absolutely! And the founders of Lightship saw just that vision. We sat around the campfire with Ben from Lightship and had a pretty lengthy discussion about this very topic. He was very knowledgeable in it and the bidirectional power was not an afterthought, it was a forethought of design!
@petebarnett9
@petebarnett9 Год назад
Nice concept, but even if you put All of this technology in a regular camper You could probably get the same result because the glass will be much heavier than a traditional camper shell. Even if I could get an extra 100 or a 150 miles of range for a camper assist with my F150 lightning I'd appreciate it. I don't think anybody wants to drive 300 miles pointing a camper anyway you probably need a break at about 200 or so miles.

I was initially excited to see this, but after thinking this over I really think the founders have never been camping, definitely not in hot or cold weather. With all that glass, cooling and heating will be problematic. As you stated, not a lot of storage. No "bedroom" as you noted, so now you have to pack up your bed/sofa each morning to have your space back. Storage...where are you putting all the bedding? You guys seem very enthusiastic, but not asking any hard questions which makes me question your motives. Personally, I like Airstream's eStream Concept better. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rQEztxVGEbI.html

There are a lot of trailers and campers out there that share a living/seating or dining space, including many smaller Airstreams. Nearly all class Bs have a flexible space that functions as seating and sleeping. Again, many campers on the market don't have a designated room. As we mentioned, I don't think it's going to be for full-time living...but for camping trips, spring breaks, and such it seems very functional and the increased range/aerodynamics solves the problem of being able to reach further distances on those limited weekend or school break camping trips. Shades and awnings can help with heating and cooling and both appear to be a part of the design, along with heating and air conditioning. Our Airstream has a lot of windows and it does just fine in extreme conditions. Definitely has pros and cons, but we can absolutely see several use cases for this trailer!
@Wolfgangersen
@Wolfgangersen Год назад
That's cool but you better use a gas powered vehicle to pull it . Because a 350 mile range ev drops to about 110 miles when towing.
@AllElectricFamily
@AllElectricFamily Год назад
That’s the point of this RV. The assist makes it so that your range-whether gas or electric-stays nearly the same as if you weren’t towing. An EV that can go 300 miles would still be able to go nearly 300 miles when towing this RV.
@josephdonnaway5755
@josephdonnaway5755 Год назад
Interesting, but I await details. Their website is very limited. The concept doesn’t appear to have overhead storage, hanging lockers, standup shower, separate sleeping space, or ground clearance for non-paved roads. A chassis that low woukd even make dumping tanks difficult at most dump stations. Where is the aircon? How much more aerodynamic is it actually than my 28’ Airstream, at about the same weight? Being able to pop into our trailer at rest stops for lunch or toilet is important to us - how much time and effort is involved in ‘raising the roof’ on this unit? Safety of a self-propelled trailer? Oh, and I added a countertop dishwasher to our Airstream, which is indeed real water saver.
