Sonny and Cher were "a married duo" very very famous in the mid and late 60's. Neither is off key, Cher just has a low voice and Sonny's is higher. He wrote this song along with many many others they had hits with. Cher invented the "Bell bottom" look (flared pants) in America, along with other style's she and Sonny made famous during this era. Cher was a fashion icon and still is!
@monkeysuncle2816

B&L thought they might not be together from their stage act, but Sonny was very clever- he let Cher make him the butt of the joke always- "trolling" him regularly. She was the cool one, he was the fall guy. But he never got mad or mean back to her the way it looked like she did on stage. He KNEW everyone was going to love Cher, and they did. Had he fired back it could have made them less appealing to the audience.
@Rhiannon011
@Rhiannon011 2 года назад
@@monkeysuncle2816 Yes, so true. I watched Sonny's funeral and when Cher spoke she said "Sonny was always the but of the jokes but he didn't mind it and he never complained, he took it like a trooper". The only time something really bothered Sonny was when a restaurant refused to serve Sonny and Cher, because of the way they were dressed..he had long hair and no tie and the people eating in the restaurant were laughing at both of them. So he wrote a song about it called "Laugh at me" and it was a hit.

Sonny “discovered” Cher and injected a power dynamic to their act. Cher grew as a performer becoming the stronger singer and actor. They had a popular comedy/variety show which revolved around Sonny as the pompous husband and Cher the wisecracking put-down artist. The show, the act and the marriage broke up simultaneously. Cher went off to do bigger and better things in show business and Sonny became a California congressman who died in a skiing accident.

They did at least one season of their show after their divorce. They were on friendly terms and continued to care for each other right up until Sonny's death. She even gave the eulogy at Sonny's funeral by invitation of his second wife. He was older than her, basically discovered her when she was a teenager, married her young, directed both their careers, made her famous but continued to control everything as she grew up and began to want a say, which created conflict between them. But there wasn't any animosity between them after they divorced and they continued doing the show as though nothing had changed.

Don't sell Sonny Bono short (no joke intended). Son of poor, immigrant parents, high school dropout (no matter what Ed Sullivan said), song writer starting at age 16 with many hits to his credit, recorded by many famous artists, worked his way up from janitor to West Coast record producer for Phil Spector, had a top 10 solo hit record of his own, had, I believe, 5 songs he wrote that all appeared on Billboard's Top 20 in one year, a record only maybe 3 other artists have equaled or surpassed(Elvis, Rolling Stones, and the Beatles), 2 Grammy nominations, had 2 hit tv shows (22 Emmy nominations), 4 Photoplay awards, 2 OFTA awards, a TV Land award and an enormously popular concert act. Sonny and Cher were ranked number 18 on Rolling Stone's 2015 list of the 20 Greatest Duos of all Time. He has lots of acting credits and beyond that, owned a successful restaurant in Palm Springs, was a very successful and popular mayor of that city, he was elected to U.S. congress, was well liked there and served his district well. He has an act of congress named after him, a wildlife refuge, a memorial park in D.C., an interchange on Star Route 60, a 40 mile stretch of Interstate 10, a concourse at the Palm Springs airport and a fountain named after him along with a statue of him in Palm Springs. Oh, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Further, he should probably be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but that is political and not talent or success based, so really doesn't matter, I guess.

There are so many things about this song that make it a timeless classic.....the simple, yet clever lyrics, the back-and-forth vocals of Sonny and Cher....but perhaps the greatest charm of this song is the soothing notes of the oboe after each chorus!

If you can, check out some of the clips from their show. They had comedy skits, special guests, all kinds of cool stuff. After they split, she dated Gene Simmons from KISS and I think she got married to Greg Allman from the Allman Brothers. She did remain close with Sonny to a degree. She gave a beautiful eulogy at his funeral. They also reunited one more time before his death and sang this song on the David Letterman show. A great song number one in USA and UK for several weeks They were a married couple but Cher was not happy because she felt Sonny tried to control her too much

This was during their hippie/borderline beatnik days, hence the laidback vibe to the act - gotta realize they did this song onstage thousands of times, and also The BEAT GOES ON. Even after they divorced after one variety hour on TV, they did another show that ran a couple seasons - and at the end of every show I think they did a verse from this song.

Sonny was a great guy. Got to meet him a few times around DC back in his Congressman days. We even convinced him to sing this song one night a Capitol Hill bar. So bummed out when we lost him.

"Do they date?" lol. They were married. They got divorced in 1975. I used to watch the Sonny and Cher Show all the time back then. It ran on TV from 1971 to 1974. You should skip forward and do a reaction to Cher's song "Believe" from 1998. She was the first to use auto tune in this song, but NOT to correct her voice. She is a goddess. I named my siamese cat after her when I was 16. :D

They were married and in love and everyone knew it. You heard the studio version. It was #1 in the U.S., England, and Canada and they were huge stars on the heels of this song. They had a very popular weekly Sunday evening TV show and, of course, Cher went on to become a movie star (with an Oscar) and a singer with hits in six different decades! You can hear this song over and over again in the movie Groundhog Day.

As has been said already. They were married and very much in love. Sony always believe in Cher but it took her a while to become as confident and then transformed into her mega super stardom! She still specks mother but kindness and love about him. He died in a ski accident several yrs ago. They had great comedic chemistry. Enjoyed this one. You guys are great!! Thanks💕

Sonny was 30 years old and Cher was 19 years old. Cher's first recording as Bonnie Jo Mason on a song called "RINGO I LOVE YOU" radio refused to play it because it sounded like she was a man singing. Sonny & Cher weren't actually until right before Chaz was born in 1969.I Got You Babe is about a love no matter what the outsiders thought,even if his hair was too long(Back then long hair on guys was in). This song stands the test of time as an ultimate forever classic.

This WAS the studio version. They were lip-syncing for a TV performance. Cher could sing, before striking it big she was a professional backup singer. - she sang backup on "Be My Baby". Sonny....not so much. But he did know record production (he was an assistant to Phil Spector) and could write pop songs.

Cher had a huge solo career

Sonny and Cher were married then - they had their own show for a time. Sonny went on to become a Mayor (I think Palm Springs) then a Congressman from California - Cher became a superstar on her own. Fun reaction, guys!

If you have a chance, watch some of their shows (you can find on You Tube) ... they were very cute and funny together. After their divorce, Cher became a huge solo artist and Sonny went into politics (Congressman) until his death in a skiing accident. In our day they were fresh, new, very 60's and very popular.

Sonny found Cher when she was very young, around 15 I think.They had a very popular Variety Show on TV for awhile. Cher, with the help of Clothing Designer Bob Mackie changed her "Little Hippie Girl " image into a "Sophisticated Hollywood Diva" wearing Mackie's outrageous clothes on every show. They broke up but we're always close. Cher became a great Actress, her performance with Nicholas Cage in "Moonstruck" won her an Academy Award. Sonny went on to become a Congressman from California serving many terms until his untimely death in a skiing accident.

They truly loved each other, while married, and I'm sure way after when they each went in different directions in their lives. At Sonny's funeral, Cher's heartfelt and heartbreaking eulogy was her obvious genuine love for the guy. They loved to kid around especially on their Sonmy & Cher variety show in the 1970's., around the time they were going to divorce. Probably the most surprising and saddest divorce news since Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz divorced.

sonny and cher's on stage "act" was that they put each other down,but in a loving way. cher would make jokes about how short sonny was,and sonny would kid cher about her nose. on their weekly variety show (highly recommend watching) they would start with a song,and stop in the middle to make jokes,then finish the song. you get the feeling their home life was pretty much the same as their stage personas. they loved each other so much that put downs were just another way of saying, "i got you babe".

As everyone is saying here and probably said on the stream, they were married. For about 11 years ('64 to '75). Sonny went on to become mayor of Palm Springs, CA and after that a republican congressman until he died in '98 in a skiing accident. I remember watching the Sonny and Cher variety show as a child. Seems like everyone had a variety show back then.

Good review!! Can remember growing up watching the "Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour" and "The Sonny & Cher Show" on TV during the 1970s. They were married and had a TV show; divorced; lost the TV show; then came back with another TV show for they were quite popular at the time. The 1st TV show was awesome and a great hit. The 2nd show did not last as long for the chemistery just was not the same after the 1st show ended and the divorce. This is probably one of the greatest love songs ever made, even though it is kind of goofy.

I was little when the "Sonny And Cher Variety Hour" was on. I think I was the same age as their daughter Chasity. The things I remember instantly from the show. The cartoon music "videos" for JIM CROCE'S: "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" and CHER'S: "Dark Lady." But the memory burned into my little brain was seeing Cher, bareback on a (white?) horse, with a huge Indian headdress, a barely there Indian "bikini/loin cloth" and A LOT of very tanned skin! Yowza! Ha.

Married. The most interesting thing about them is the people that they recorded with...check out the film "The Wrecking Crew" about L.A. studio musicians that played on all the hits for twenty years. Women, like men, have a variety of pitch ranges in their voices. Altos at the low end, sopranos at the high end. Joni Mitchell goes from one to the other herself in one line of her song "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot/ Big Yellow Taxi".
