it"s not my business but I didn't notice anyone else point it out but that baler was not designed to work with poly. It is set up to use sisal twine which is a larger diameter and has more resistance. Your tension may be off if it hasn't been converted.

Thats a good point. Thanks for watching!!

Those knitters can be fickle some times. I like seeing the older equipment still being used and being productive. Thank you for taking us along.

Love your Ford tractor. I can still remember a guy clearing the lot where my dad built our house, maybe 1951 or so ... I was probably four years old. My dad later gave me a steel toy Ford tractor which was my prized possession for quite a while. Even took it to "show and tell" at school! Glad that old baler worked for you.

It has been more than 50 years since I was a kid growing up on a farm and this video brought back fond memories. We even had that same Ford tractor and MF bailer. However, my dad would not let stand the raked rows not being perfectly straight from one end of the field to the other. Also we only used a sickle mower, not a circular mower, so the grass strands were full length and therefore easier to bail.
@HumbleAcres

That’s really cool. Check out the latest video I used a sickle mower this year, I didn’t have one last year. Thanks for watching!!

@@HumbleAcres Yes, that is the one. I am watching that video now. Got to LOVE all the old equipment. As a Teenager I even found and old Sickle Mower that was pulled by a horse or Mule. I purchased it from an old farmer and re-built it and got it working perfectly, then converted it to be pulled by the tractor.

Nice! I have the same baler. Those arms that are stiff under the knotters have bearings that need lube. Scribe a line around the mount, unbolt it and flip it over, you’ll see a bearing held in by a snap ring. Soak some penetrating oil in over a few days and loosen up the bearing. They need to move freely.

It’s good to see old equipment working, like you say I think everything is gummed up with lack of use, 1 thing I would recommend is always to stop the baler when you dismount the tractor it’s only too easy to get caught up in either the PTO or baler mechanism
@HumbleAcres
@HumbleAcres 4 года назад
That is probably a good idea. Thanks for watching!!
@ruedaricardo

Power to you, man. That baler is spitting out really nice bricks. First of all, most likely your first missed knots where caused by too much grease on the billhooks. One or two pumps from the grease gun on the zerk at all it takes. Second, the right side is missing knots every now and then and most of the times it is caused by too much twine tension or broken hay dog springs. Check both on a regular basis. Third, try to rake in a way that lets you maintain a constant speed. Clutching in and out will interrupt the power transfer to the PTO and will cause knotting issues and bale density problems too.
@larrymcever4601
@larrymcever4601 4 года назад
on start up you loop the cord through the needles and tie them off the rocker arm. The first two bales will always miss tie. That is normal. Loading the baler too fast will cause miss ties especially with the MF baler. Dull or worn cutter knives on the knotter will increase miss ties. A dull cutter on the baler ram can cause miss ties. Baling too fast . . . in a higher gear or with too much hay pulled into the wind rows can cause miss ties. I have lots of hours on this very type baler. Your were correct to use low gear and your wind rows did not look too large. Keep up the good work.

I am using an old mf12 baling and had to get rid of the poly line and use the thinker stuff. it's better for animals and mowers since it is biodegradable. Mine doesn't miss a tie since I use the old twine and slowed down.

If you had been doing this a while first thing you would do Is get that trash outa those bales. Your animals dont need any plastic paper or twine in their food. Don't just walk by it pluck it out.

A lot of baler problems stem from poor maintenance especially at the end of the season, so many times I have seen hay from the previous year still in the chamber, not stripping out the string and not covering everything that is shiny including the knotters, string guides and tensioners with lots of grease., also check the state of the knives and the ram clearance.

Every now and then my MF 12 will skip knot or bust a bale every now and then, it's common on old Massey bailers, they can be fidgety at times

I have the same square bailer and I pulled the plunger out of it abd all the rails and made a couple new rails and all that works now but my problem is that neither sides are tying and I sharpened the knives and the bailer is double twinning and won’t tie a knot what do you think the problem is

If you had 'rowed up' all that hay properly, you could have baled that up in a quarter of the time, and got better bales, because you would have an even feed into the baler
@HumbleAcres
@HumbleAcres 2 года назад
I have learned this bailer doesn't like a lot of hay at once.
@Steventhedieseltechapprentice
@Steventhedieseltechapprentice 2 года назад
What do you do with the hay you bale? I know in one video you said it doesn’t really have any nutritional value so I can’t imagine it’s used to feed animals. This is something I would like to do eventually when I buy some land - I have the tractor, just need some implements. Great video as always!

When you slow down on a pile dont roll backwards that is what the brakes are for. Balers dont roll a pile of straw along in front of the pickup fingers. I think your fingers are worn off too short and need replaced.
@HumbleAcres
@HumbleAcres 4 года назад
The brakes don't work on my tractor. The fingers being worn off is possible I will look into that. Thanks

Larger windrows will help and will save baling time. When raking, make a round in one direction and then go in the opposite direction and kick the second windrow against the first, making one larger windrow out of two. Cuts your baling travel distance in half.
@HumbleAcres
@HumbleAcres 4 года назад

Uh that old massey baler has a narrow throat if to much hay is fed into it it will shear pins and or clog up single windows are best big windrows are for big balers . If your hay is thin then double it thats ok. But single windows and sisal twine will work best

You’re using an 8N. How did you keep the baler going when you did the stop and go through the heavy hay?
@HumbleAcres
@HumbleAcres 4 года назад
So when I stopped I would just take it out of gear and let the clutch out. the flywheel on the baler would keep up the momentum while the clutch was pushed in. Thanks for watching!!
