Even though she has been compared by many to Amy Winehouse, her major influence is Billie Holiday. Her love of jazz came from her grandmother playing jazz music around her when she was young. In 2014, she entered at age 7 and won Norway's Got Talent at the age of 8. With her new found fame, she used it to appear on many shows from abroad and help raise millions for the less fortunate children around the world. At age 13, she was invited to participate on America's Got Talent: The Champions in 2020. She shocked the audience and the judges with her rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. She received a standing ovation from all and got the Golden Buzzer from judge Heidi Klum to go straight to the Finals. Her performance went viral and even the group Queen responded on Twitter by saying, "Wow, what a rendition!" I've been following her closely for 7 or 8 years! When she was less known, I frequently commented on her performances and background, and the reactor's comments, but do not need to so much now.
When she was 12 and just moved to the USA, she did a series with Ivan Mendez on guitar. They would hang out after school. pick a song, run through it once or twice, then Grandma Merry would record it. Raw music, beautiful. Try "Stay" from these sessions. Then one of her versions of "A Million Miles", her tribute to a loved Grandfather. The black and white version with piano and cello is best. Have tissues to hand.

Born Angelina Jordan Astar on January 10, 2006 in Oslo, Norway. Angelina started singing around 18 months of age, after listening to Whitney Houston on RU-vid. She quickly became obsessed with listening to music videos and her maternal grandmother, Mery Zamani got Angelina interested in classic jazz. Mery Zamani is Iranian and was a prodigy as an artist and poet while growing up in Iran. Angelina attended the Oslo Waldorf School and participated in the Oslo School of Music and Performing Arts after-school program, where starting around age 4, she had training in music but no vocal training. Her teachers were smart enough to not attempt to change what she was doing vocally. More recently she along with her grandmother have designed and made the clothing she wears on stage. *Why Angelina always performs barefoot* At age 6, while traveling in the Middle East with her mother and grandmother, Angelina noticed a girl around her age standing on the side of the road, asking people to step on her bathroom scale to be weighed in hopes of getting some money. Angelina took off her shoes so as to not get the scale dirty and stepped on the scale many times to make the girl feel better. Angelina befriends the girl who was not wearing shoes and has scars on her feet, and learns she is an orphan. The orphan girl tells Angelina how beautiful she thinks her shoes are. Angelina says her shoes don’t fit her well and she wants to give her shoes to the orphan girl who thanks Angelina for giving her the shoes. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, “I want to become a doctor, but that will never happen since I have no parents and I have siblings so I have to do whatever is necessary for us to survive.” Angelina told the girl to never give up on her dreams. The poor girl asked Angelina what she wanted to be when she grew up and Angelina replied that she wanted to sing for the whole world. It's unreal like her, from a very young person, she choice to use her incredible passion and understanding for music in a splendid way, especially with these legendary songs. Born Angelina Jordan Astar on January 10, 2006 in Oslo, Norway to her Norwegian mother, Sara Astar and her Swedish father, Gerry Christian Slattman. Angelina started singing around 18 months of age, after listening to Whitney Houston on RU-vid. She quickly became obsessed with listening to music videos and her maternal grandmother, Mery Zamani got Angelina interested in classic jazz. Mery Zamani is Iranian and was a prodigy as an artist and poet while growing up in Iran. Angelina attended the Oslo Waldorf School and participated in the Oslo School of Music and Performing Arts after-school program, where starting around age 4, she had training in music but no vocal training. Her teachers were smart enough to not attempt to change what she was doing vocally. More recently she along with her grandmother have designed and made the clothing she wears on stage. Why Angelina always performs barefoot At age 6, while traveling in the Middle East with her mother and grandmother, Angelina noticed a girl around her age standing on the side of the road, asking people to step on her bathroom scale to be weighed in hopes of getting some money. Angelina took off her shoes so as to not get the scale dirty and stepped on the scale many times to make the girl feel better. Angelina befriends the girl who was not wearing shoes and has scars on her feet, and learns she is an orphan. The orphan girl tells Angelina how beautiful she thinks her shoes are. Angelina says her shoes don’t fit her well and she wants to give her shoes to the orphan girl who thanks Angelina for giving her the shoes. Angelina had turned 8 years old for her next performance on NGT, covering Billie Holiday’s “I’m a Fool to Want You” singing acapella which was required by NGT unless the singer also played an instrument while singing. She is largely self taught. Natural talent. She did some music in school, but this cannot be taught by a teacher. You either have it or you don’t. Encouraged by her grandmother Mery Zamini. At 6 she was with her Mother and Grandmother when she saw a child about her age setting on the side of the street trying to get people to step up on her bathroom scales hoping to get some money! Angelina went over to talk to the little girl was an orphan with 2 siblings. Angelina noticed she had no shoes and had sores on her feet, Angelina took off her own shoes and gave then to the girl and promised to not wear shoes when preforming on stage till all children had shoes , and today at18 she is still known as the barefoot princes! She has raised millions of dollars for charities! Oh, she also at age 9 became Norway's youngest published author after writing a book about the experience of meeting the little girl! This is my understanding: " Angelina was exposed to music the same as any child is exposed to music. Her grandmother did expose her to a lot of the great jazz artists. Angelina took music and ran with it. If anything, her parents had to put the reins on her to keep her grounded. They did enroll her in a music school, but the music school did not want to attempt to alter her in any way, but to teach her how to protect her voice, teach her music theory, and teach her how to read music and play music instruments. After asking her parents to let her go on Norway's Got Talent (NGT), she had to wait until she was seven years old. After winning NGT, her parents had to continuously turn down offers from all over the world for record deals, recording contracts, etc. They let Angelina do a few charity events, national events, TV shows, etc. They were determined to let her have a normal childhood. She did finally sign at age 14, but the stipulation was to not promote her until she had finished school. Now at age 18, she is finally being promoted!"

This is one of her most bombastic vocals because the song calls for that (given her decision to stick pretty closely to how the original songwriter and performer Screamin' Jay Hawkins sang it). IMO, she is every bit as impressive (even at this age and younger) when she's singing really subtle songs, which is how she won _Norway's Got Talent_ . She didn't sing anything anywhere close to this in that competition, and she still ended up _dominating_ it, winning with 46% of the votes in a field of 10 final acts. You really should check out those performances sometime soon. An easy way to do that is to react to a single 14-minute compilation video containing almost everything she sang on TV during her time in the competition. It's called "Angelina Jordan - sings 7 songs", posted to the "Song and Heart" channel. As for her family supporting and protecting her, read my comment here! Even when she finally signed with Republic Records at 14 it was with the agreement that they would not promote her till after she finished school and that she would have final say over what music she preformed! She is in no way your typical modern day female vocal artist! There is no one else like her!
@@Uncle_John_II After winning Norway's Got Talent at the ripe old age of 8, many record exects and corporate interests including Disney, flew in with the big bucks - Angelina's family swiftly sent them all packing! They did however allow Angelina to engage in various charity and music events mainly during school holidays. They supported her musical drive and development, while also granting her as much as possible an ordinary childhood.
Angelina said that at some point she couldn't even go to school because people were flying in from LA and going to her school to see if this 7 yr. old was for real. Even though she was 8 when she won NGT, she was only 7 when she auditioned and immediately became a viral sensation. As @amplifiedlight indicated, her uncle Mike said (paraphrasing): They arrived in their fancy jets, with their briefcases and contracts, then left crying in disbelief, that we wouldn't sign with them.

Actually she turned 9 two weeks before this was recorded. It was her Homage to Screaming Jay Hawkins who wrote the lyric's. She did the arrangement and you see the producer reading her notes and smiling. The Musicians called her "The Boss." If you want to hear an amazing but leaked recording with excellent video listen to "I'm Still Holding Out for You." she was 10 when that was recorded but not released as usual.
