Who didn't love and buy Tracy Chapman's self-titled album in 1988?. It was such a phenomenon that it was nominated for 6 Grammy's that year. She won 3 of the 6 Grammy's, including "Best New Artist."

Welcome to an incredibly unique talent that many people missed. A few rather noteworthy artists did recognize her - Eric Clapton does a duet with her, "Give Me One Reason" (her song) - and Luciano Pavarotti duet with her, "Baby Can I Hold You Tonight" (also her song). Watch the awards show where she and Luke Combs sing it together and she finally gets the recognition she deserves for having written this song. She entered the musical world in a time when it was not easy for a gay black artist to get recognition for her Talent. 😞 🌈❤️

She really knows how to use her beautiful voice. Sometimes soft and clear, sometimes trembling, sometimes powerful. Excellent art.

Listen to those last to verses again. She leaves her drunk dad to go with her boyfriend. Has a kid and the boyfriend ends up like her dad. So she's telling herself once again that she has to make a decision, but now it's to leave her husband. She's incredible. Last Grammy's, she and Luke did a duet of this that was very good.

Well, now you've found one that I had never heard before! I never heard "the other one," either. I had no idea there WAS a song "out there" with that name! That may be because I had a tendency to turn OFF new music being introduced in the late 1980s. I heard SOME, because of my kids, but this wasn't one of them. WOW! I agree about the authenticity in her voice. Going back in after your comment about that, with the story going further, I'm thinking maybe it was the TIMES she had written about, more than a personal history. I know SO many people that went through those kinds of things back in the 80s. There was so much confusion going on, everywhere. This is something I've found in a lot of the songs that Dan Vasc has covered, also -- especially regarding the Iron Maiden and the Helloween songs. I know I knew about the things that were happening, and spent a lot of time in prayer about a lot of them, yet (back then) I shied away from the metal songs because of the harmonics that I couldn't handle, mostly, and never even really knew all the lyrics, or what stories they were trying to tell. Then, when I started listening to Dan's music, and going to look closely at the lyrics to see whether or not I had them straight in my brain, I was pretty much flabbergasted! Now that I KNOW what so many of those songs were about, I can see WHY a lot of us parents were being lied to about how AWFUL the songs were, and that we shouldn't let our kids listen to that junk...for shame on us! Stupid devil! OK...I just went and searched for info about the song, and here's a really good summary, I think. Only when you play her first CD all the way through will you understand her background and music motives. It tells a wonderful but sad life story. ACROSS THE LINE is so emotional.

I absolutely love her. Luke did good and respected her in his version. But, NO ONE does it like Tracy! I’d like you to react to a new band that is also great at storytelling. The lead singer is an amazing song writer. This song is very personal. The Nicotine Dolls - 30 Somehow

I've been telling folks that Luke getting a grammy for a bar cover is ridiculous. Comes nowhere near the magic of the original.

Great song! It was the first song I heard from Tracy Chapman & bought the album. All the songs on it are great. She is a very good singer-songwriter & storyteller. I have always loved her unusual voice. Other hit singles are Talkin' 'bout A Revolution", "Baby Can I Hold You", "Crossroads", "Give Me One Reason" etc.

One of the best songs ever written. One of the best songs ever sang. She has the voice of an angel.

Luke Combs’ father used to play her version and Luke loved it which was why he covered it.

Thank you for recognizing her talent. Another that is unappreciated. She is Raw and Wholesome and says it like it is. A rare jewel who never received the recognition she deserved. Sad that her song is popular now in country cover but giving her a bit more recognition so maybe not so bad. Again, thank you for discovering the original. Another that is under rated is Pink. My personal favorite is Mountains O’ Things. She’s definitely in my top 5 artists!

Not a true story for Tracy but for too many people I suspect. She has shown great empathy and integrity throughout her career. She’s a storyteller and imho a truthteller. She never turned a blind eye to the state of things. Great songs by her to check out would be, Talkin’ about a revolution, Moutains of things, For my Lover or Telling stories among others. She has many great songs. Great reaction to this song and seeing her perform this at such a Young age alone on that stage always throws me. Spellbinding for sure.

She is the first female person of colour to win a CMA award for her song. That ain't nothing.

I am so glad that Tracy Chapman performed at the 2024 Grammys with Luke Combs for this exact reason: Everyone NEEDS to know that he was fanboying and Tracy Chapman is the owner, singer and ALLOWED Combs to cover her song.
