That last note is a subharmonic E1. It's a technique he learned from watching tutorials by David Larson. Geoff has also learned the growl technique from Tim Faust.
VoicePlay is an entire collection of vocal monsters, and you're right- this video is impressive, but not the best display of their capabilities. I'd recommend their cover of Carry On Wayward Son if you want to hear them doing a straightforward song, or Go The Distance if you're feeling Disney. If you're feeling both Disney and medley, The Little Mermaid Medley is amazing, and if you like your medleys without Disney, check out Queen In 5 Minutes or Boy Bands In 5 Minutes. (Honestly, there are very few bad choices, but these will give some of the best demonstrations of their ranges and abilities). Also worth noting that the group is in flux at the moment. Their tenor 1, Earl (the guy with the beard, in this video) left about a year ago, and they were in the process of replacing him. Then a couple weeks back their baritone, j. None (the black guy on the far right) announced that he was leaving the group for now to join the Navy band. So they're currently down by two at the moment, although hopefully not for long (they've been actively auditioning for the roles for a while now).
@@CynicalTesuji So the core of the group right now is Eli (dressed in red in this video), Geoff (the bass lead) and Layne (beat-boxer/baritone). As a wide-range baritone myself, I have not sung many mixed voice songs that have the bass singing the lead; we are usually singing a harmonic support from below.
3:06 "...There's gotta be some low bass coming in here. There it was." Excuse me while I grab some popcorn, because you ain't heard nothing yet. Also, your reaction to that E1 at the end was priceless, and pretty much what I felt when I first heard that. You are correct that this was a great showcase of talent, but not of range for anyone who isn't Geoff. I'd suggest Queen in 5 Minutes (which gives everyone a chance to shine, including the beatboxer, Layne), or Carry On Wayward Son (which is just a top-notch arrangement).
To get a much better idea of just what powerhouses they are vocally - individually as well as part of an ensemble - I can recommend 'Hoist The Colours,' 'The Dragonborn Comes,' 'Queen In Five Minutes' and 'Carry On My Wayward Son.' You won't be disappointed, I promise. They've had a few line-up changes over the years: Earl (bearded tenor with the squeaky voice in this video,) left a few years ago, J.None (black guy in this video) was replaced by Cesar de la Rosa (guy with the gammy eye in their 'Hoist The Colours' video,) and they often have guest singers now to make up the fifth spot in the group (Omar Cardona is a popular one, along with Ashley Diane and Jose Rosario Jr.) The other three are Geoff (the bass guy you already know,) Eli (pronounced 'Ellie') is the bald tenor with an awesome rock-rasp to his voice when he lets loose (he shows that off in 'Hoist The Colours' and 'Carry On My Wayward Son') and Layne the beatboxer, who also has a great singing voice too.
GOTCHA! That last note is a trip-maker, as they say in the fossil hunting world... Welcome to *another* rabbit hole. Try the Moana medley, Carry On My Wayward Son, and their recent Man in the Mirror for something more... reflective (I'll shut the door on my way out).
I just saw some of your charity live stream. Such a great initiative, thanks for doing that! I heard your version of My shot from Hamilton there, and I really liked how emotional that was. Wanted to tell you that VoicePlay has done a version of it too, a rather old cover from them (2016). It's one that I love but I've never seen suggested to any reactors, so I guess that it's not one of their most liked, though. However, I really love it!
As others will tell you, it will quickly become addictive. This is one of my favorites simply because it showcases the huge range that Geoff, has plus it looks like so much fun. I really like that you're able to overcome your terror of Nightmare before Christmas to really enjoy the video. You really need to check out My Mother Told Te and Hoist the Colours just to see how immensely talented these guys are. And check Geoff's channel also. His version of Misty Mountains from The Hobbit will blow you out of the water. He sings harmony with 3 versions of himself: Thorin oakenshield and 2 other dwarves join him at the table just because. He sustained some pretty low notes but also shows his range and goes high. Plus it's a really really pretty arrangement. I'm going to subscribe hoping that you'll cover more and more of these guys thanks for the entertainment.
It was your expression when Geoff Castellucci hit that last note! 🤣 That's what's so fun about watching reactions, I already know what's coming and I'm gleefully anticipating your reaction! ❤
Great reaction! I felt so sorry for you with those traumatic memories... 😢😉 But if you want to dwell on those memories some more, VoicePlay's other Nightmare Before Christmas videos are great as well: "This is Halloween" (also a bit creepy 👀), "Kidnap the Sandy Claws" (totally crazy 🤣) and "What's This" (rather cute in my opinion 😍). I agree with the VoicePlay suggestions already given, especially "My Mother Told Me" (from the TV show Vikings and the game Assassin's Creed), "Warriors", "Little Mermaid" and also suggest their most recent cover of Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror". However, I think everything from them is great, as is everything from the bass's solo channel, Geoff Castellucci. (Sorry, I never can keep my recommendations short. There are so many brilliant songs done by them!! I always get carried away...)
I know I'm late to this party, but you also need to hear Geoff Castellucci's s solo stuff if you like him with VoicePlay. Look for "Ain't No Sunshine" and "House of the Rising Sun" to start with.
I see a few others suggested it, but if you want less creepy (gotta say Nightmare is one of my fav movies tho lol) go for Carry on Wayward Son, it’s sooo good, or Queen in 5 minutes is great too
If you want something that truly showcases their voices as well as their other talents, watch their version of Warriors. Or Can't Help Falling in Love. Or My Mother Told Me. Or...or...or...
Subharmonics. That's the secret The one I keep going back to , love it, is Tennessee Whisky. Fabulous harmones. But any of their newer ones you'd like I think. Warriors, , Mr Blue Sky, Sh-Boom, all great. Can't Help Falling In Love, You're My Best Friend, And so many more.
Since you've reacted to Home Free and Voiceplay, your next stop on the a cappella train should be Pentatonix. While I LOVE a cappella music and groups, they're easily my all-time favorite. Since you prefer to watch an artist's/band's most recent video first before going back to listen to their other stuff, you'll want to start with their 90s Dance Medley. Pentatonix are masters when it comes to medleys, including their evolution of "insert artist" videos (which are one-take and live), and mixing two songs together into a seamless banger or ballad. I would then follow that up with their Daft Punk video, which is a medley of Daft Punk hits that won Pentatonix their first of three Grammy's for song arrangement. It was also one if their earliest viral videos. After that, you should probably check out their version of Hallelujah since it's their highest viewed video, currently sitting at 619 million views. They also do covers of Bohemian Rhapsody, Sound of Silence, Can't Hold Us, Say Something, and many many other incredible covers. They also have 2 original albums. You really can't go wrong with them.
You should also check out Pentatonix. Especially some of their older stuff with Avi Kaplan like Hallelujah or Mary Did You Know? Regarding Geoff Castellucci if I remember correctly he has a 6 octave range.
This is mostly a showcase of the the human subwoofer also the set design and visual and audio effects. I'm glad you mentioned that. Not all songs have him dominate the spotlight. They have too many guest singers for me to memorize. He is a huge part in every song even when it's mostly in the background setting up the atmosphere. If i has to recommend something it would be "The little mermaid" and "Moana" I'm biased for Disney songs. Some of the people that spam please react to X either have no interest in the groups, individual members of those bands most of all the music itself. I don't think they are aware of this and it's in every single fanbase.
You definitely need to add Pentatonix to your channel. And I would also suggest these A Capella artists as well, some better known than others. Peter Hollens "Misty Mountains" with Tim Foust, Acapop Kids "Fix You" (started by Scott Hoying of Pentatonix, they are better than most adult A Capella groups) and the little known Eclipse 6 "Boy With Luv".
If you like a cappella and like to check out an other level have a look at VAN CANTO. They have many covers and a bunch of songs of their own. Be aware its metal a cappella =D
@@marshakey6304 I totally agree, if it weren't for this song I'd probably say the next best one to check out would be either "Bang" or "Warriors"to best showcase their various technical skills I'd heavily recommend be check out Geoff castellucci's solo work, such as Blackbird, Sixteen tons, High and Dry
That and Hoist the Colours. I am obsessed. The sheer talent combined with a lot of hard work produces extraordinary results. (I always seem talk in hyperbole when I comment on them.)
I'm a bass and still cannot do some of his techniques. Geoff, Tim Foust of Home Free, and Avi Kaplan (formally of Pentatonix), they all have insane ranges into high tenor, while being able to hit notes over an octave lower than an average bass singer. Out of all of them, Tim Foust hits the lowest notes; he's actually blown speakers during live shows.
I'm pretty sure Geoff it's 1 note higher and Tim hits 1 note lower so there almost the exact same range . Geoff specialising in subharmonic my personal favourite notes to hit and Tim specialising in growl .
They all have. Tim sometimes does it on purpose. Avi had to start taking extra speakers on PTX tours to replace the ones he blew and Geoff has to make sure he doesn't get too close to one when he is in the basement or it will blow.
I haven't heard it about Avi but I'm guessing he's in the same category as the other two as having a range of 5 octaves or more. They all are treasures!
You're in the rabbit hole now. Have fun. Earl Elkins (Tenor 1) left the group last year, so their most recent vids have various guest artists in the open spot. JNone (Baritone) is "leaving" too, joining the Navy. He'll only be able to record with them while on leave. If you want to see more of Voiceplay doing showtunes in costumes and makeup and character voices, there are three other songs from Nightmare Before Christmas. Plus: Little Mermaid Medley, and You're a Mean One Mr Grinch. Those would be my top recommendations. Just straight songs that show their "ordinary" singing voices: Can't Help Falling In Love, Tennessee Whiskey, Carry On Wayward Son, Go the Distance. Of course, thanks to COVID19, Geoff also has about 8 songs on his solo YT channel.
Really appreciate you checking it out! The bass singer Geoff Castalucci is unbelievable with his sub harmonics. Whenever you get a chance in the future you should check out his cover of "16 Tons" It showcases how talented he really is and how low he can go.
Geoff gets into the basement, and then blows the floor out and goes LOWER. And then in the next breath he's flying up in the sky with that high belt of his. I love love love the range of ALL these guys, and I adore the theatrical quality they have SO much.
Fun fact. Tim from Home Free taught both Geoff (here in Voice Play) and Avi (formally) from Pentatonics how to sing lower. Likewise, I believe it’s Geoff though could be one of the other guys from Voiceplay, has helped Home Free with a couple of their arrangements over the years. It’s a tight knit world Acapella.
@@justineanglemyer3980 Actually Geoff arranged Elvira for VP during the Sing Off tour. Home Free was on the same season, so they saw it preformed many times. They've been friends ever since the show. They asked Geoff if they could use the arrangement, and of course he said yes. HF changed it a bit, but they still gave Geoff full credit.
Geoff's range is B0 to A5. One's you might like: Tennessee Whisky, Hoist the Colours, Dragonborn Comes, Friends on the Other Side, Queen in 5 Minutes, Wicked, Just Sing (turn on the captions and you will find a lot of the people who have sung with VP, Aerosmith's Dream On, Imagine Dragon's Warriors and also Enemy, Man in the Mirror, Carry On My Wayward Son.
Geoff (the Bass) has tutorials on his channel (along with a bunch of other cool covers by him) on how to sing that low. Also he does some readings...his Poe is especially chilling.
Fun reaction. Since you've mentioned before your fondness for sea themes, check out Hoist the Colours which is from Pirates of the Caribbean and also check out My Mother Told Me which has a viking flair to it. Enjoy the rabbit hole.
I love watching reactions to this video, when the watcher says there is the low note at the beginning of the song, and then I grab my popcorn and shake my head, nope.
the Bass singer Geoff has a range from C#1 - A5 the last note was a sub-harmonic. on his home page Geoff Castellucci has a few tutorial's about singing really low and doing sub-harmonics
Loved your reaction. Geoff has a video out there explaining how to go for the low notes if you're interested. If you're interested in a really great song by Geoff that shows his range, go for 16 Tons. A wonderful recent song that allows them their real voices while still letting them go into costume is "My Mother Told Me." Thanks
If you want to listen to a variety of vocal talents from this group, without the character voices, I'd recommend "Boy bands in 5 minutes" (a medley overview of the entire genre, going back to the 1950s), Their cover of "Go the Distance," from Disney's _Hercules_ , and their cover of "Bang!" by AJR. The latter two feature guest high tenors (the high tenor in this video left last spring, and their Baritone left this spring (temporarily?) for a tour of duty in the U.S. Navy).
I am a huge fan (especially of Geoff). I recommend their cover of Kansas' "Carry on Wayward Son" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-evG28VVz4dY.html and Imagine Dragons' "Warriors" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DNh6_XubM2A.html Geoff's drop at 1:56 is ridiculous.
This is where people say Geoff STARTS to go (not just low but) Sub-Terranean. I have not personally heard it yet but supposedly he can go LOWER than the last note here!!! UNBELIEVABLE!
The last note you heard which by the way is impresive was E1 which was done with subharmonic technic. But the awesome thing with this is that this note was not actually the lowest note of this song. The lowest note of this song was at 4:29 of your video, if you see carefully Geoff who was back from the rest of the group and he done an efect with his voice who started from a normal note (for him normal) and slided down to his lowest subharmonic note which is C#1 which is incredibly low but not his lowest note which is one octave down C#0 with fry note.
I think you would enjoy their "Queen in 5 Minutes". They are an amazingly talented group- you just need to watch their other stuff that is not from a movie that triggers so much terror! You will fall in love with them.
I am a bass singer myself and I have to tell you, that last E1 is a hell of a job to go down to. But, but, Geoff is a master at his craft, far, far beyond my skills, so it's probably far easier for him. I can do E1 on the very best of days, and sometimes not even then.
