She's basically been a star since she was 7 years old. First and foremost, she is a jazz singer but has the ability to sing any genre. She also does all of her own musical arrangements. Her early influences are Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, and Etta James to name a few. Her love of jazz came from her grandmother playing jazz music around her when she was young. She entered and won Norway's Got Talent at the age of 8. With her new found fame, she used it to appear on many shows from abroad and help raise millions for the less fortunate children around the world. At age 13, she was invited to participate on America's Got Talent: The Champions in 2020. She shocked the audience and the judges with her rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. She received a standing ovation from all and got the Golden Buzzer from judge Heidi Klum to go straight to the Finals. Her performance went viral and even the group Queen responded on Twitter by saying, " Wow, what a rendition!" Not only that, but she received the copyrights for her version of this song from Queen, which makes it hers now. She did not win, but her fan base grew and expanded her popularity. Now 16 years old, living in Los Angeles, and is signed with Republic Records, whose clients include Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, and Drake to name a few. Her family and Republic Records have agreed not to heavily promote her just yet so she can live as normal of a life as possible and finish her schooling. She is working on a new album of original music which will be coming out next year. She recently returned back to Norway and performed at a number of sold out concerts in which fans from around the world came to see her. Many of the fans there said she sounded better live in person and was a once in a lifetime experience. Her fans call her The Barefoot Princess. She always performs with no shoes when she sings. Why? The reason is very special. When she was 6 years old, she was traveling with her family in Iran where she met a shoeless homeless girl in the streets that was about her age. She made money by weighing people. After speaking with her for a few minutes, Angelina noticed the scars on the girl's feet and asked the girl what her dream is. The girl said she wanted to be a doctor but she couldn't because she had to make money for her family. Angelina did what came natural to her, she gave the little girl her shoes and told her to not give up on her dreams. Angelina Jordan Astar started singing at 1 1/2, teaching herself to sing (jazz) at 2, auditioned for Norway's Got Talent at 7, and ended up winning shortly after turning 8. She has over 180 cover performances and 5 originals. She arranges the music and lyrics for her performances, sometimes creating breathtaking ballads, and sometimes just shocking us such as with her cover of Screamin Jay Hawkins' 1956 "I Put a Spell on You" (Jay's face is on the candle she holds up in the beginning). In this current video I've listened to numerous voice coaches, who can point out what she's doing with her physiology to create the sounds and vocal ornaments. What they are at a loss at in explaining, is to say just how she can be doing anything that she's doing. Angelina arranges the music and/or lyrics to the songs she covers. It's almost like she's singing a song the way it was supposed to be sung. After winning Norway's Got Talent, her parents insisted that she enjoy, as much as possible, a normal childhood. Her family moved to the US, and she now lives in LA. She will turn 17 in January, and she will graduate high school in Spring of 2023. From there on forward, there will be no holding her back. The story is that while living in the Middle East, at age 6, Angelina came across an orphaned girl, of her own age, sitting in the street, weighing people on a bathroom scale to earn money. I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on RU-vid, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she con convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener. Yes, Angelina was 9 years and 2 months old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956. She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original. Things I found particularly worthy of note in this video are (a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled. (b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers. (c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it. (d) The smile on the face of the Bass player. (e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine" (f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand (g) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.

And it's Acadian with a hard C like Cat. lol Acadians are French people who lived in Canada and most were exiled to Louisiana and are now called Cajuns. My family is part of the group that stayed back in Canada, but now live on the border of Maine and New Brunswick. And to make it more confusing I was born and raised in California. LOL And wow I never heard of this young lady! How did they fit an entire adult female vocalist in that little body?!! She sings like she has lived a life time already! I'm actually a vocalist (or should say former now, all I do these days is sing in my shower lol). But, I sing a lot of blues (as well as some other genres like rock) and I am blown away at her ability already! I was no where close to that at 9 yrs old. Angelina was literally listening to jazz while still in her mother's womb! Thanks to her Mom (Sara) and Grandma Meri Zamani's love for music, from conception to the present at 16, her entire life has been filled to the brim with music. It's in her DNA and flows through her veins! There is a short video of her, at 18 MONTHS OLD, attempting to sing the Dolly Parton/Whitney Houston song "I Will Always Love You"! At ages 2 & 3, with the help of her grandma, she began listening to jazz, blues, etc (especially jazz) for hours at a time and began studying the jazz greats (Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Dinah Washington, Aretha Franklin, etc.). Angelina has been quoted as saying that to her, music is as necessary as breathing. Yes, just 9 years old here, this is her arrangement of this classic Screamin Jay Hawkins original from 1956. This young lady has been singing Jazz since she was 6 years old and has absorbed all the great Jazz artists into that tiny little body, Louie Armstrong, Billy Holiday, Etta Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, Frank Sinatra....well it is a long list. She won Norway Got Talent at the age of 8 competing against adults by performing Jazz songs from Billy Holiday and won the show with an unbelievable performance of Gershwin's "Summertime" in the style of Etta Fitzgerald. This is because Hawkins was the original shock-rock guy (think Ozzy Osbourne-type craziness) and his style is difficult to emulate and also because his dated delivery is uncomfortable and stereotypical to our modern sensibilities. Yet Angelina respectfully sings his own song in a manner that exceeds his (Hawkin's image is on the candle she holds at the start of her video). You must go and listen to Hawkins' original (and throw in a couple of "famous" covers as well) to see the true genius in how AJ incorporates many of his vocal elements [usually omitted by most singers]. From her audition on Norway’s Got Talent (2014 - age 7 - Gloomy Sunday "Billy Holiday") through the final on America’s Got Talent The Champions (2020 - age 13 - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road "Sir Elton John") and the 130+ videos in between you will not be disappointed. This includes three originals song: “What Is Life”, “Oslo” and “Shield” Since then she has done many new covers and now her new singles "Million Miles" and “7th Heaven”, along with her movie soundtrack "Mercy" from the motion picture “The Hating Game”. As well as her brilliant version of Elvis’s “Suspicious Mind”. My personal favorite is her cover of Lana Del Rey's "Born To Die". Although “Mercy” is really growing on me. She is the youngest published author in Norway. Angelina wrote and her Grandmother illustrated a book about why she sings barefoot. She was on a trip to Iran where her grandmother is from and met a street girl weighing people for money. Angelina sat and talked with the girl. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, a doctor but that it could never happen. Angelina told her to never give up hope. The girl complimented Angelina on her shoes and Angelina noticed her scarred bare feet so she gave them to her, and the little girl told Angelina she would pray for her every day. Angelina sings barefoot to this day to remind herself (and the world) that there are still children in need. All book proceeds go to charity.
