This was actually at the very end of the best rap era. The greatest era for mainstream rap music was the LATE 80S and EARLY 90S. That was widely considered to be the GOLDEN ERA for HIP HOP MUSIC. That ERA officially ended when TUPAC was murdered.

Thats at the House of Blues on Hollywood/Sunset blvd. Classic venue but i believe its closed down now. Never been in but been outside of it the few times ive been to LA
