I couldn't click on this quick enough! Al is a jazz/fusion master! This man is a legend! He had a huge influence on Steve Vai and many others.

Some of the greatest live guitar performances ever recorded are Di Meola, Paco de Lucia, and John McLaughlin on acoustic guitars. Three virtuosos on stage with acoustic instruments and improvising. It doesn't get any better. Truly amazing.

He’s one of my two favorite guitarist/composers of all time along with Jimmy Page. Al Di Meola is a virtuoso on the acoustic and the electric, which is very rare. I’ve been listening to him for 45 years. 👉Thanks for all your reaction videos by the way. Al is more popular in Europe, and has done hundreds of concerts over there over the decades some all acoustic, some all electric and everything in between and he’s married to a German woman. He’s based out of New Jersey where he grew up.

II will never forget hearing him live in Stockholm back in 1978 - just amazing! Yes, I'm that old and he is older than he was then, but his music is still young!🙏✌

You asked about return to forever. It was one of the leaders of the jazz fusion movement along with the weather report and the headhunters and the Mahavishnu orchestra. Anything you listen to would blow your ears off, especially the early album Romantic Warrior. The past members of Return to Forever are really one of those too numerous to count. The founder of Return to Forever was Chick Corea, who is a phenomenal keyboard player. Anything by him would be a great addition to your Listening list.

Interestingly, while he was a member of Return to Forever, Al's critics complained that he played too fast. They claimed they couldn't hear the individual notes.

You might want to check out Al's collaboration with John McLaughlin and flamenco virtuoso Paco de Lucia, all three playing acoustic :)

That was insane. Those unison passages were insane. It was like Frank Zappa and Ruth Underwood (playing xylophone, marimba, vibraphone, and other percussion).

I had the great fortune to see AL Dimeola,Jean luc ponty, and Stanley Clarke. Front table sitting right in front of AL Dimeola in a very intimate club. Wow how amazing! The Rite of Strings. They all were amazing and so nice

That’s an amazing time in his career as well when he was at his absolute Peak from a composition stand point and overall playing. I got to meet him in April and sat front row for his electric tour here in Indiana. It was an experience I’ll never forget. We even got to talk ab his sunburst ovation custom legend as I was able to find an 85 just like his in sunburst as well. There will never be another like Al and i really believe he’s the greatest guitarist of all time. Cielo e terra, kiss my axe, and consequences of chaos are my favorite works of his!

Saw him this past January as he started his new electric tour. This was the fourth or fifth time I've seen him, and he hasn't missed a beat. He played all electric, mostly early stuff. It was a great show! I've never heard Al sing that I can remember, but he has had some beautiful and haunting vocalists on some of his albums and tours.

Well I hope you saw why this is one of my favoritee live performances. The guy is insane aand the parts where he and the synth do the clall backs and then un turn sync togther and roar gives me goosebumps. IMHO all the top musicians play Jazz Fusion you should here Eddie Van Halen taking a crack at it. He would have been insane as well as he was very good at I believe theres a video of it somewhere

The progressive bands and the jazz-rock fusion bands in the 70s were 50 years ahead of their time. It has now been 50 years. Enjoy! I'd go with Return to Forever's album, "Romantic Warrior" next, and from that I would go with "Duel of the Tyrant and Jester", then the title cut and then take your pick. Before that and while on Elegant Gypsy album, I would next go to "Mediterranean Sundance" and then the title cut. Guaranteed to get the heart pumpin',

You must play a song by the super group ... Stomu Yamasta's Go. Al DiMeola was the guitarist along with 4 others ... GO means five in Japanese. Anyhow, besides DiMeola, the other 4 members were Steve Winwood on vocals, keys, etc. Michael Shrieve on drums ... he was Santana's drummer at Woodstock and Santana's first 7 albums. Then, there is Klaus Schulze on keys/synths, who was a pioneer in Kraut Rock and electronics. Then you have Stomu Yamashta ... a percussionist and composer whose Kabuki theater music is very interesting. The band formed because they were between projects. They had 2 studio albums and a Live from Paris LP. Winwood sang on the first album and the live album. Another singer who's name escapes me was on the second album ... great voice too. There are 2 songs from the live album with Winwood singing I'd think best for a reaction. They are CROSSING THE LINE (7:48) and GHOST MACHINE (3:48). DiMeola doesn't play lead guitar on CROSSING THE LINE. Enjoy!

And since you know Phil Collins you might listen to some of the jazz/fusion band Brand X. Brilliant guitars (insane bass guitar) with Phil on drums. 'Nuclear Burn' would be a great start (but no vocals). Just great music!

Very rare to have any vocals on his 15+ albums. Not him singing. Try the studio version of the song “Tirami Su” and studio versions - acoustic of: 1Mediterranean Sundance 2 Fantasia suite for two guitars - he overdubs but it’s him on all the guitars 3 one night last JUNE electric, long, epic song

You won't find much for vocals in Al's music, or in jazz fusion in general. It is mostly an instrumental genre. The odd time you do have vocals, it is usually pretty horrible. It's better when they stick to what they do best, blowing us away with their musical chops and virtuosity. Check out more of his stuff or the Return to Forever album, "Romantic Warrior".

Terrible recording. You should have gone with the album track. Return to Forever? Only one of the most acclaimed Jazz Fusion bands of all time. Al is a bad ass for sure. He's come off as a jerk in some interviews, but there's no denying the dude can play his ass off.
