1984.... were a husband-and-wife songwriting-production team. They started writing and recording together in 1964. Nickolas Ashford (RIP) and Valerie Simpson Both were inducted into Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002. Solid was #1. In 2009, Ashford & Simpson remade the song in honor of President Barack Obama, calling it "Solid (As Barack)".

Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson got their start as songwriters at Motown in the 1960s. They wrote all those great duets between Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," (which was also a hit for Diana Ross in 1970) "You're All I Need to Get By," "Your Precious Love," and "If This World Were Mine," (which was also a hit for Luther Vandross and Cheryl Lynn in 1982.) And, yes, Ashford & Simpson's love WAS solid, lasting until Nick Ashford's death from cancer in 2011.

"Ain't No Mountain High Enough" was written by Ashford & Simpson and first recorded by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell in 1967. It was remade by Diana Ross as her breakout solo hit in 1970.

I love Ashford and Simpson “It Seems To Hang On “, “Is It Still Good to Ya”, “Don’t Cost You Nothing”, “Found a Cure”, “Street Corner”, and “Love Don’t Make it Right” are my absolute favorites! They were inducted into the 🎵 SONGWRITERS HALL OF FAME in 2002. Nick Ashford (Husband) Valerie Simpson (Wife) Rolling Stone ranked them #19 on its list of the 20 greatest DUOS of all time. When this song was a hit in the 80s I loved it but had no idea what legendary song writers they were. I only recently learned that Valerie Simpson played the piano on the Diana Ross version of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", one of many great songs they wrote.

They were one of the best producers back in the day. They met when they were producing other artists and then over time their love blossom. They had some incredible music and they wrote music for other artists that were amazing. I'm glad you did this one. Rest in peace, Nick Ashford 🙏🏾

Also, Nick was homeless when they met. She saw the potential in her future husband. She knew the moment she looked at him and vice Vesa. I heard them tell the story how they met on a talk show. Same with me, I was unemployed and broke when I met my wife, that was 36 years ago. She knew I had something. Lol! Ashley is my favorite reactor,!

So thank you for telling me that and I am very happy for you and may God bless you and your beautiful wife. Unfortunately my marriage did not last but we had 26 years together but sometimes it doesn't work out. Maybe I'll find someone but to be honest I'm happy being alone. In addition to the great duets they penned for Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, they also wrote classics like "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "The Boss" for Diana Ross as well as "I'm Every Woman" and "Clouds" for Chaka Khan. They have not gotten enough flowers for their contributions to GREAT music!
