Agreed! Another rappy one but with totally different vibes is Doin' Time. My fave version is the one with the Pharcyde feature, it was on the short album with What I Got (I think). There's just something so chill about the base line, with that drum that reminds me of Outcast's Rosa Parks' sonar sound (somehow the illest possible sound ever), and the cold AF chorus from Bradley: "Summertiiiime, and the livin's easy; Bradley on the microphone with Ras MG; All the people in the dance, will agree that we're - we're qualified to represent the L.B.C, me, me and Louie, We go r-r-r-r-r-run to da party and dance to the rythm! It gets haaaardeeeer... RAAARg." FIRE ASS SHIT yo I'm overdosing on nostalgia for the 90s right now, don't mind me! 🤯🤘
Agree about April 29th 1992!! Also a good fit for “white people music” discussing / being allies with the black community. Fun fact he says April 26th in the song which is the wrong date. You’d love all the early Sublime stuff. Their Genre would be Ska / reggae / hip hop IMO
@@erichighwayThe song has nothing to do with “being an ally.” The song describes the anarchy and destruction the riots caused, and points blame at the police. It doesn’t talk at all about standing up for black people or any of that nonsense. The only mention of black people comes along with a mention of Mexican people. There’s one mention of race in the whole song and it’s not even directly aimed at what you’re talking about
Glad you found Sublime. Bradley struggled with substance abuse, especially heroin. This song uses metaphors to describe his battle. He was a brilliant song writer and a soulful singer. Their genre is usually defined as a mix of Ska, punk, reggae dub. Highly recommend you check out "Summertime / Doin Time" for vibes and soulful take on the classic song, "April 29th, 1992" a song about Rodney king riots, and "Date rape" for his story telling ability. Just months ago, Brad's son Jacob recently took over lead singing duties and reunited the original band members. They played Coachella the last two weeks and are planning to tour. He sounds very much like his father, check them out.
I know I just commented but damn, Sublime always reminds me of the good times we had back then. I almost forgot we had so many. That's what music should do for the soul.
Lou Dog! His Dalmatian doggo buddy. Lou Dog was their mascot. He took that Dog everywhere with him. I read that after Bradley Nowell passed, Lou Dog went into depression. So damn sad! In February 1990, Nowell purchased a Dalmatian puppy from an old man for $500, and named him "Louie" after his grandfather. Also referred to as "Lou Dog", he became a mascot for the band Sublime. Lou Dog was often allowed to wander the stage during concert performances. Louie was also often featured on the cover of Sublime albums, and was referred to in the lyrics of Sublime songs. In Sublime's most successful radio track, "What I Got", Nowell sings, "Livin' with Louie Dog's the only way to stay sane". Another prominent song by the band, "Garden Grove", mentions Lou Dog as such: "We took this trip to Garden Grove. It smelled like Lou Dog inside the van". Following Nowell's death in 1996, Lou Dog was cared for by Michael Happoldt, the band's manager. Lou Dog died from old age on September 17, 2001. Addictionedit
Sublime is SoCal reggae, early 90’s skate/surf Long Beach culture. Making that drive on PCH listening to Sublime smoking a blunt with my late best friend are the memories I’ll cherish forever
You should check out their recent Coachella 24 performance live....His son played both weekends live with Sublime in homage to his Dad. At 28. Beautiful. RIP Bradly.
I'm very glad to hear you exploring the music period loosly defined as "the 3rd wave of ska" Sublime was part of an era where the resurgance of Ska music rooted in the 60's (Al Capone - Prince Buster) that became repopularised in the 80's (Ruder Than You - The Bodysnatchers) then made a comeback in the 90's. Sublime's influence on music of this era cannot be understated. You can see Sublime's influence on music still, in bands like "10ft Ganja Plant"
@@scootaymildo1070 no they're not lol. It's joke music. You can like them all u want. But liking them and them being a "great" band are 2 different things. Tool is a great band. Metallica. Led Zeppelin. Sublime is not that
“What I Got” was their big national hit. It’s fantastic. Hardcore fans will prolly think that’s basic, but whatever it’s really good. I think the better choice is to listen to “Santeria” next. It’s their #2 biggest hit (more 1A/1B), and probably also a song that hardcore fans will think is basic. But if you’re tryina get a feel for what these guys are all about, vibe-wise it’s a pretty perfect next song to do.
Oh shit, I just saw “April 29, 1992” in the comments and…i might have to revise my answer. If youre from cali, that should be next. If not, yeah - “Santeria” next. Final answer.
Thanks for listening to sublime. It was cool of you to actually look up Brad and give him some respect. It's actually crazy, his son just performed as the front man for Sublime at Coachella the same age that his dad passed away.
One of my favorite bands of all time. So glad you were able to react! Not a band you lose your mind to. A band you sit back, chill, light up, comfy vibes.
Badfish was my absolute favorite. I always wanted to see them live in my teens. I was so heartbroken when he died. He son is playing with them now, and it's sweet.
Badfish is one of my favorite Sublime songs. And while it was actually written in 1989 prior to his struggles with heroine addiction that eventually claimed his life. This song proved to be analogous of his love of surf culture and partying. But also, in the end, prophetic as he himself ended up becoming a "Badfish" within a few short years of writing/recording this song. And I always find the line "Ain't got no money to spend" bittersweet. As, at the time he wrote the song, couldn't afford heroine, but was allured with it's notion. Then later starts to find success and subsequently the money that follows said success, and falls victim to heroine's demise.
Bradley (his last name is pronounced like "nowul") was from southern California and was influenced by all of the different cultures there including hip-hop, punk, ska, but more noticeably, reggae. He was a very cool person with tremendous talent that left us way too soon. I would love to live in a world where he was able to continue creating music because I know the best was yet to come, which says a lot since the only two albums the band releaed before his untimely death were both fantastic start to finish. It's nice to see people haven't forgotten about him and his band.
So Cal Reggae is a very distinct and long gone genre. Sublime were the kings of it. Honestly it was amazing watching someone listen to one of my all time favorite songs for the first time. Took me back 30 years.
We'd start with at least 2 reps of Doin Time, cruuuisin the backwoods of NH in a big green boat of a car, bumpin the SHITE out of that bass, blazin a blunt (or more likely a roach someone found on the floor lol). Either way, that bass came on and it got me feelin like the baddest mo fo to ever DO IT! 🤘
Sublime was running in the background of damn near every party of my youth. You need to listen to Santeria. That's probably their greatest song. Same chill party vibe too.
First time watching your channel. Its nice to see the music of my time still giving off the same good vibes in a new generation that's severely lacking pure soulful music. RESPECT
Straight feel goods.....RIP Bradley Nowell. I can still remember seeing "What I Got" music video and being hooked instantly.... They are without a genre for me... OG's... reggae/ska/punk/hip hop influenced tunes all goodies
Man they have so many good songs. Most of them are pretty chill like this and short it's an easy rabbit hole to go down. Caress me down and pawn shop are 2 of my favorites.
Used to listen a lot of Sublime when mom died when i was 18. Gotta love those cali sunny day vibes or maybe brazilian beach vibes! Much respect from São Paulo, Brasil! We love Sublime over here! Stoners united, anywhere!
The genre is sublime lol…. We Just went to Sublime show in Orlando… his son Jakob who was like 10 months old when Bradley passed is now the frontman with the original members, it’s a beautiful thing.
me and my best friend chilling at the beach when we first heard sublime and it blew us away how different and expressive they are. Cali Reggie and they started the trend that rock the new wave Reggie we have here in America. Hold on Rob and get ready to be amazed
Heyy!!! That’s dope you are enjoying the shit we grew up to here in Southern California. As a 43 year old dude who grew in Long Beach and the Harbor Area of Los Angeles I hope you have chance to explore some more of our local music.
Oh you're going to LIKE the whole sublime catalog..!!!!!!! Very up your alley..!..!!..!!! Genre would be like hip-rock-hop with ska/reggae influences... Sublime the band IS a genre itself to some good extent as well!
Sublime has always been my go to for just laid back chillin. They have loads of good jams. 5446 that's my number/ ball and chain and Scarlet Begonias are my favorite 2 for sure. Be cool to see you check one of those out
Fan since 1993- I even had the original 40 Oz. to freedom T- shirt with the "Skunk records" logo on back. Now I see that shirt at target and American eagle stores- but no judgment to that.
Time to get on the ska train!!! So many classic bands going back to the 80s with madness ( our house, one step beyond, my girl) and the specials (nightclub, message to you Rudy, ) to the 90's and 00's with bands like mighty mighty boss tones (impression that I get), reel big fish (beer, take on me,) and less than jake ( all my best friends are metalheads, plastic cup politics, dopeman,) Would love some more SKA!!!
Pawn shop, april 29th 1992, smoke 2 joints, under my voodoo, doin time, garden grove. All bangers. Sadly he passed before the release of their biggest album
Yeah brother! About time we got some Sublime up in here. Yo, that track is off their "40oz to Freedom" album. That entire album is just banger after sweet, sweet banger. I'm thinking livestream album listen/reaction on youtube and/or Twitch. You won't regret.
I begged my mom for this album when i was in 3rd grade. I was on that vibe early. After i got the album, was a tape by the way, i sat.in my room with my mickey mouse tape player amd listened to this tape non stop. I got a notebook and tried to write down every lyric i could. About a month after i got the album, i saw news on mtv that Bradley died. Other than Cobain, this was one of the first musicians i ever heard of dying. Rob, my guy, you hitting the deep feels with h all your videos lately, its like you are just picking a song from my cd case. Keep it up my guy.
If you're going to listen to more Sublime make sure you put it up on RU-vid bro.. always awesome seeing people discover this band for the first time. You need to check out Summertime, what I got and April 26 (the LA riots song) stay Gold! 😎👍💯🔥
when these guys were coming up in the club/backyard scene, they single handedly changed the whole west side mood around the LA area. up until then it was all fast, hardcore punk music and the vibe was so agro everywhere... they took it down a BUNCH of notches.
