@@chrisab66 Which again shows you how professional those musicians were. A good example is Phil Collins, because the initial version of the song only had computer drums. (Yup, they already were around, look up a device called the LinnDrum, and you'll be blown away if you look up on how many songs it was used on.) Collins came in, heard the recording and said "Sounds a bit dead innit? Let me have my crew bring over my drums, and I'll spruce it up a bit." And again as you yourself pointed out, this was before recording on Laptops, so everything in the studio had to be prepared. And Geldof was going, "We only have a single day to record, this, it will take you way too long to set your drums up and prep the studio for you to get the best sound." But Phil's crew arrived half an hour later, the drums were set up in twenty minutes, Phil did a dry run and nailed the track in two takes. Done: a professional musician at work.

Bono didn’t want to sing the line “well tonight thank god it’s them instead of you” but Bob Geldof knew it would have the biggest punch to the listeners. And it did. I still get chills when he sings it. A lot of people need to watch the BBC doco that inspired Bob Geldof to do something. I still remember when l was 7 when this came out and the footage of the starving children with a thousand flies around them. I have the DVD box set of Live Aid and they actually showed the some of the doco on the big screen at the Philadelphia concert. People had a look of shock.

All the proceeds went to famine relief in Africa. Bob Geldof also organized the concert "Live Aid". It raised millions of dollars from the concerts in England and Philadelphia. USA for Africa's proceeds went to famine relief in Africa also.

As others have pointed out, this is the same charity, set up by Irish Rocker Bob Geldof, which also gave us USA for Africa's “We are the world”. But as this music video shows, the way this was done is completely different from how the stars of USA for Africa did it. Because here you can see the stars intermingling with each other, some brought their children. There were road stories, a lot of pleasantries and everybody treating it as a fun time. At one time, the stars got hungry, so a crew member was sent out to get some grub from a local snack bar, nobody complained. All the noses were pointing into the same direction. “We're going to make a difference here.” Because, as the title of the song already says, those people in Ethiopia had no reason whatsoever to celebrate Christmas, in fact, Christmas was the furthest thing on their minds. Fast-forward a couple of months, Bob Geldof is contacted by Lionel Ritchie, to have him involved with USA for Africa. So Geldof flies over to Los Angeles and is confronted by a sheer culture shock when walking in. Because, the stars were complaining, some of them were going “I'm too famous for this, this is bad publicity.” But what broke camel's back for him was when a huge lavish banquet was brought in so everybody could eat. Geldof said a few choice words and stormed out. Lionel Ritchie tried to suss the situation but telling him “You don't get it, that's the way things are done in America.” wasn't really helping matters. In the months that followed and with Geldof putting Live Aid together, it was that same grumbling that prevented him from getting the biggest artists to play the American stage. Why do you think, Michael Jackson and Bruce Springsteen weren't playing Live Aid? Because their managements were telling them, “Don't do this, it's commercial suicide.” Geldof meanwhile found himself delivering the famine relief aid in person in Ethiopia, leading the charge like a general on the front. And the people in the camps knew who he was and often came up to him singing “We are the world” and Geldof telling them “Sorry, that's the wrong song.”

My senior year in HS…thanks for a great memory. This was performed by major British pop stars; organized by Bob Geldof. 100% of the proceeds went to Band Aid Fund to help with poverty in some African countries. We still kick in $10 a year for the fund and every time this song is played, more royalties go to the fund to keep supporting humanitarian efforts. This is kinda like the USA for Africa video done by US pop stars. Y’all picked a good one to react to!!

The famine in Ethiopia- in just 2 years (1983-1985) over 1.2 million starved to death, it was of biblical proportions. If you have heard USA for Africa this was before that and after they did their own song when they saw Band Aid and then came Live Aid the concert...lyrics, 'where the only water flowing is the bitter sting of tears...where nothing every grows, no rain no river flows, do they know it's Christmastime at all...here's too them underneath that burning sun."

We Are the World was inspired by and followed Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas (which came first and started the trend of celebrities from different groups coming together to raise awareness and funds). Band Aid started the idea, which was copied not only by We Are the World, but by other countries/regions as well. They set the template/blueprint. This also led to Live Aid from Bob Geldof and Midge Ure. It was in reaction to seeing and then visiting Ethiopia in the midst of a devastating famine.

[Paul Young] It's Christmas time There's no need to be afraid At Christmas time We let in light and we banish shade [Boy George] And in our world of plenty We can spread a smile of joy Throw your arms around the world At Christmas time [George Michael & Simon LeBon (Duran Duran)] But say a prayer Pray for the other ones At Christmas time it's hard But when you're having fun [Simon LeBon & Sting] There's a world outside your window And it's a world of dread and fear [Sting & Simon LeBon] Where the only water flowing Is the bitter sting of tears [Bono & Sting] And the Christmas bells that ring there Are the clanging chimes of doom [Bono] Well tonight thank God it's them Instead of you [Boy George & Others] And there won't be snow in Africa this Christmas time The greatest gift they'll get this year is life (Oooh) Where nothing ever grows, no rain or rivers flow Do they know it's Christmas time at all? [Marilyn & Glenn Gregory] Here's to you [Paul Young] Raise a glass for everyone [Marilyn & Glenn Gregory] Here's to them [Paul Young] Underneath that burning sun [Paul Young, Marilyn & Glenn Gregory] Do they know it's Christmas time at all? The long version is a bit better, with some background footage. I still quote Midge Ure to this day ‘Feed the people. Ethiopian famine killed millions and this charity helped blunt the suffering. Merry Christmas!
