As others have said, the documentary Still Bill is *essential* viewing. He was truly a beautiful soul. He didn't become famous until he was in his 30s, and his head wasn't turned by fame in the way that so many other stars' were. One of the things I love about his records is that, for all the gorgeousness of his voice, he wasn't always spot-on with his intonation. These occasional imperfections just make him sound more human and relatable. Nowadays, obviously, they'd be ironed out.
he left his mark on this world he was a engineer who played guitar a bit was in navy i think anyway wrote some songs demo played them to some record guy looking to get someone to do them , why dont you do them yourself sounds good to me , went in studio was a bit out of his depth the players were all pro and great player . made a few album recorded at least 6 tunes that sold throughout the world , like ive stated before many artist can write a tune , but to write a standard is like winning the lottery .
It is easy and always was to identify a Bill Withers song, his voice is one of a kind. So many greats from this artist. To anyone who loves him I highly recommend the documentary "Still Bill".
Oh yes that documentary is great! I purchased it on Amazon prime video and I watch it often. His voice is so soulful and soothing. Whenever I need to hear some feel good music I put Bill Withers on RIP Mr. Withers❤❤❤
Another example of a song that has been sampled and covered. This song hasn't just inspired others to sing this song. However; this song also influenced the making of a movie by the same name, Lean on Me. The movie Lean on Me [ featuring actor Morgan Freeman ] . The movie shows the importance of needing someone to lean on [ not physically but emotionally].

One of the iconic songs by the great Bill Withers and was a HUGE #1 hit! RIP! This is the original and written by Withers after he got to LA looking to get into the music business and noticed how people were different in LA. The song is about how he missed how people in the area in West Virginia he grew up in was tight knit and always looked out for each other.
This was also the name of a very popular motion picture based on true story the no-nonsense principal Joe Clark, which used this as its theme. The different version that you heard was probably by Club Nuveau but I prefer the jazz instrumental cover by Shirley Scott. Bill Withers wrote this and did the original. Also, the Netflix movie "Black Godfather" will give you a lot of insight as to the man behind his label and, not only his success, but the success of quite a few Black people in and out of the music industry.
