The 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to the American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan (born 1941) "for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition".

Bob Dylan was fearless in telling this story to a mostly white audience back in the day. As you said, he didn't pull any punches telling the story and alluded to Black men being pulled over by the cops for "driving while black." He was a champion of the Civil Rights Movement and he didn't care of people were offended by his storytelling. Apparently he read a book that Reuben Carter wrote while he was in prison and was so taken by it that he went to the prison where he was being held and spent time listening to him. He championed his cause and Reuben was eventually released after serving 19 years for a crime he didn't do. Dylan didn't try to take credit for getting him released, but it is widely known that the authorities reopened the case as a result of the song and the stir that it created. I loved your reaction. Dylan wrote so many songs over his career in so many genres that you can't pin him down as a particular type of performer. But he is the best songwriter of his generation and maybe of all time. Thanks for listening.

This song began the very slow process of freeing Mr. Carter from prison , but it took years of work by idealistic lawyers also . The whole story is told in a documentary , which interviews Mr. Carter himself outside the walls of the prison that was his home for many years .

The song was about Rubin Carter Hurricane. He was an upcoming boxer but got caught up in this NJ murder and was falsely accused to be involved. Bob went all out by writing a song to speak to the unjustice. Bob is a more than an incredible songwriter...he's a way of life.

Not without reason that he won The 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature. Bob doesn't make much of himself, so he didn't show up to accept the award. I also think it is the first time this award has been awarded to a songwriter/musician. Greetings from Norway. 😀

Yes, the song is about the same person, Reuben "Hurricane" Carter, a middle-weight boxer. Denzel Washington plays the title role in the movie. Dylan used the catchy tempo to help the song get airplay and bring the story to public light. Sounds like you might like Dylan with Cash doing Girl from the North Country.

Every Dylan song has some life story - this the story of Reuben "Hurricane" Carter. Not all are as blatantly real as this but his poetry tells the story of our lifetime. So many important songs - check out Masters of War, It's Alright Ma (I'm only bleeding), Mozembique, Girl from the North Country, Oxford Town, Only a Pawn in Their Game - I could go on and on.

I am a white man and a Bob Dylan fan, I've seen him in concert ten times, and every time I hear this song it pisses me off. I find it hard to believe that this happened in the USA, but of course it did. And just the way Mr. Zimmerman described it. So so unfair to the man, Reuben "Hurricane" Carter, a total victim of the "Justice System". Injustice is more like it. This was a true story, all of it. And the movie "The Hurricane" starring Denzel Washington, is the story from this song. I won't say the song inspired the movie, but the movie came out over a decade after the song. Reuben Carter was a top ranked middleweight boxer, like Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Sugar Ray Leonard and Thomas "The Hit Man" Hearns, but he was ripped off by the "System". HURRICANE!!!

True sad story of injustice... All too common. (Rubin Carter was a middle-weight boxer... he was the hurricane because he could jab so fast put in a prison cell, Dylan wanted to help but Carter thought he was using him for his fame. Rubin got out and split to Canada) Peace on earth.

Always concerns me to see people accept entertainment as historical fact. This song and the movie were both based on Carter's autobiography, which was mostly fiction. Someone here referred to Carter as an "upcoming" boxer. Actually he was a washed up boxer, only won one of his last 5 fights. Look up his boxing record. In the Giardello fight Carter was not robbed of the decision. Giardello was not battered and bloody at the end of the fight and controlled most of the fight, badly outpointing Carter. The crowd did not boo the decision. Watch the fight and see if it in any way resembles what is shown in the movie, it's on RU-vid. By the time of the murders, Carter was reduced to working as hired muscle for the mob. There was a non-mob controlled numbers racket being run out of that bar, that was most likely the reason for the murders. Now, the murders and trials. Carter was twice convicted and was never acquitted. Carter claimed he passed a polygraph, but in reality, he failed miserably. The witness, Bello, failed two polygraphs, but both indicated he was telling the truth when he said he saw Carter leaving the bar with two guns. The case against Carter was very strong but a lot was done wrong in the investigation and prosecution. Because of this he was awarded a new trial, and was again convicted. The reason he was awarded a third trial was that the prosecution was allowed, in the second trial, to argue a racial motive. By that time, Carter had served 17 years, witnesses had died, and much evidence had deteriorated or been lost, so they chose not to retry him. While he deserved the new trials, it was not because anything indicated he was innocent, it was that things had been done wrong in the prosecution. While he legally deserved the new trials, he was almost definitely guilty and certainly is no hero.

Just to add to your well thought out comments, Joey Giardello actually sued the producers of Hurricane when the movie came out and won a settlement for the way the fight was portrayed. He won the fight handily and even Reuben Carter admitted Giardello was the better man that night. Also I’ve never been sure of Carter’s guilt or innocence but it seems like the cops tried to frame a guilty man because they didn’t have enough evidence!
