This was the last Dead song I saw live, a couple months before Jerry died. I’m glad this song was the one.

I've had the studio version played at two funerals. Folks commented that the song gave them a different kind of permission to show emotion and somehow feel ok about doing so at the same time. Some would ask who this was, playing, who didn't know, and would respond with "Really, I would never have thought it, what a touching choice"

Deadhead here: Thank you for doing these reactions of Grateful Dead. Feel free to do the reactions the way you want. Please analysis and all. However, you may start to uncover more meanings as you listen to it more. I have meanings for songs now in my 60's that are different from when I was in my teens back in the mid 70's. Thank you again.

The lyrics to all the Jerry songs were written by Grateful Dead lyricist and official band member, Robert Hunter. He was a phenomenal writer of impactful lyrics and story telling. Definitely worth spending time digging into his stuff.

Actually, in some cases Jerry wrote the first draft of the lyrics and Hunter refined or developed them to completion. Friend of the Devil is reportedly an example of that. But, yes, generally the songs were written by Hunter.

The Grateful Dead played a lot of songs in groupings a lot of the time. For example: Scarlet Begonias > Fire on the Mountain, Help on the Way > Slipknot > Franklins Tower, and Chinacat Sunflower > I Know You Rider. So, if you decide to react to one of the above songs, you might want to include the other songs it is usually paired with.

The best aspect of Robert Hunter's lyrics is exactly what you are tapping into... they resonate at several frequencies of meaning, and possess subtle intonations of tones and nuances that you don't necessarily "hear" in the sense of what is being said, but instead what is being said between the words, between the lines. You FEEL the words on an entirely different level, and from my own experience, what you carry away from one listen might be entirely different on another go of the same song. That is just one of the many things that has drawn me to their music all these years. Thanks for sharing!

Grateful Dead started out as a Jug band, Mother McCrees Uptown Jug Champions, because Jerry and Bobby were heavily into Bluegrass. Jerry was an incredible Banjo player, before he decided to go electric. The Dead were very eclectic and wanted to play anything that struck their fancy, and was digestible. "Brokedown Palace" closed out my very first GD show, 9/6/80 in Lewiston. Maine, and quite a few others Furthur on down the road.

Thank you for this reaction. Yes, I think you began to grasp it though you didn't want to reach. In some cultures our body is our temple or palace. If it's become broken or no longer useful then our spirit must leave. Many songs penned by Robert Hunter have superficial interpretation but also a deeper message. "Stella Blue" as an example. Hunter was also very familiar with the mythology of many cultures including Greek which is apparent in the song "Reuben and Cherise" to your critic's attempting to tell you what Jerry wanted the are foolish. He never talked about the interpretation of songs because that changes it. He was a conduit for the art, it was his job to "shed light but not to master" terrapin station. Why have lyrics if not to interpret them? Silly

Brokedown became essentially an Encore tune throughout the 1980's and beyond (in the 1970's it was mainly 1st set material but no song slot was ever written in stone) "...going home, going home..." - yeah it was time to leave the venue - they used "And We Bid You Goodnight" as a show closer (encore) in the 1960's and again in the late 80's and early 90's - here is a video of the last tune they began to play that found its way to becoming an "encore tune" to tell the audience to "go home" - show's over! - it's called "Liberty" - :...gonna find my own way home..." ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7ngwJ4lu9R8.htmlsi=KW1P1TdATj-AOjpN

For me it's less this prohibition against interpreting the lyrics as much as it is the realization that the interpretation of the lyrics and music are going to change with each listening.

I probably heard this song a hundred times before I considered that it’s the speaker whose talking about their own death. With many dead songs you sort of pick up more things the more times you listen, or your interpretation can change completely. It reminds me of how people will read the Bible over and over again for years and continue to make new connections and pick up new ideas from the same verses that they had never considered before.

I have no problem with you trying to analyze Robert Hunter's incredible lyrics, but maybe you should bring them up on your computer so you don't have to speculate on what the actual lyric is. Also, time your breaks so you don't cut it off mid sentence or solo. Not a criticism, just trying to be helpful and make it a better experience for you and your viewers.👍

I didn't know what FD and JGB mean, but there are algorithms that scan videos for clips that match their copyright. You cant use short clips but longer clips are viewed as "stealing". So I don't have an answer other than, the longer I let the clip run the more likely it is that it's going to get flagged ..
@davidjordan2011

@@deepdivederekJGB clearly means "Jerry Garcia Band," Jerry's own band when not playing with the Dead. "FD" might be an uncorrected typo or miskeying of "GD," for "Grateful Dead."
