I like to say that Tupac didn't 'sample' this song... he 'covered' it.... he just added his own verses.

@ruthlafler5622

@djbowen87 yes and no. Hornsby talks about having lived in the South during the Civil Rights movement. So he lived it from a different perspective. I think that what he says to the old man shows what he felt as a child himself being surrounded by people who thought that way: just complete incomprehension of how people could think that way.

So many people miss the line “but don’t you believe them” because he is hopeful. People say “that’s just the way it is“, and he says “but don’t you believe them“ because you CAN make change.

Great classic song that stands the test of time! Bruce Hornsby has a unique style of playing the piano that's very recognizable. As someone else mentioned he was the pianist on the Bonnie Rhett song, I Can't Make You Love Me. Great reaction JJ!

Did you notice how thick the chords were? When you hear a Hornsby song, it ain't typical songwriting because he has a jazz background, yet still manages to write music that is catchy and accessible to anyone, whether they like jazz or not. If you're game, he's written some really catchy music in other great songs. I am not one to move or bounce to music, but I find myself doing it when I hear Bruce Hornsby songs. Top-tier writer, better than most of the standard writers, his music just has that fusion of jazz, pop, and extremely inventive hooks. Tupac's song is built on this song's format, only Tupac told it from a black man's perspective and it was always supposed to be in homage to this song. They're actually told together, separately if that makes sense? Also: Bruce played this song at Woodstock '99 and introduced his song as Tupac's. Game respects game.

Cool reaction. Love that he uses acoustic piano & his approach, strong & percussive, reminiscent of the late jazz legend & member of John Coltrane Quartet, McCoy Tyner. Would recommend one of Tyler’s songs called, Fly With The Wind, with the amazing Billy Cobham on drums. Though the styles of music are different, you may hear a similarity in the piano playing of Hornsby & Tyner.

When your this talented you are always going to fall victim of those that are less so. I hate people taking perfection and then bastardize it. I first saw Bruce in 1986 and understand what a great musician and artist he truly has been for many years and up to today. Singer songwriter musician of the highest caliber. Never having to sample copy or steal another creative talent that was owned by another Sorry it may offend many but if you ain’t got your own leave others alone end of.

As maddening as it was but as beautiful as it was, it was actually positive, as well, stating, "Ah, but don't you believe it", in response to "That's just the way it is". I think he grew up in VA and he remembers what he saw growing up in (the northernmost part of) the south. Probably not too pretty as it stuck with him enough that he wrote about the crazy injustices when trying to understand humanity later in life. It's hard to look history in the eye, and he was able to express his disgust and transform it into a beautiful melody. He touched a lot of people with this song.

Hornsby and Tupac are looking at the same social issue at two different points in time, one removed two decades from the 60s, one three decades from the 60s. Tupac could see more changes than Hornsby, but neither saw as many as they desired.

Songs like this, is a small sample..yet glaring example where this beautiful popular song was calling out hypocrites and racist.. sure there were racist after this..things were never perfect but being openly racist wasn't remotely socially acceptable or celebrated. This is a small sample of why some of us who grew up in this generation can't understand or phantom what is going on today...it blows our minds. It's also why so many let's say 40 yr old ppl are trying to get the younger generation who has good intentions but to realize all this nonsense is manipulation..ppl are benefitting from us fighting, arguing, etc. Ppl are making money and winning votes and none of them actually care who it hurts. Vast majority of ppl then and now have general respect for each other as long as your trying to be a good person...white or black...there are horrible, useless white ppl that other white ppl hate..same could be said about black ppl 20 yrs ago...now there is just no truth or true reality...Noone understands eaxhother ot seems attempt too. Try anger a b d tribalism..more by how you vote than even race! Puppet masters are winning, the vast majority of us are just pawns in their game.

This song helped through so much of my life in height of maturation that we all go through and my mental illness had set in due to the mental abuse by mom for unforeseen reason no one wanted to acknowledge. I've managed to pull myself up by own boot straps as much as possible and I have attained 3 college degrees. My mom has since passed on. I love her but hate her at the same time because she has left behind so many scars in my life, but for some reason this song is pulling me through once again, although the message it is different it is the arrangement of the music and soothness of his voice. As for my Dad, he passed a month after my Mom and then there is that. Love you always mom and also hate you as well.

Was involved with a lady way back in 1988 who has sadly long since passed I remember her saying to me do you fancy going to a concert tonight at Hammersmith Oden London UK I asked to see who she replied Bruce Hornsby and the Range. I’d never heard of them but went as my love of music was enough to make me. Little did I know I was about to embark on a life long love affair with this musical genius. At that time the first two albums were released The Way it Is and Scenes from the Southside. The band played everything I think from those albums as I remember today in a set over three hours long. The importance of that night was that concert will remain in my memory forever not only because of the beautiful lady that made it possible and is no longer with us but as my number three in my all time list of concerts attended. Only topped by Dire Straits Alchemy 1983 at the same venue and Queen at Wembley 1986. Bruce and his music have been with me for life his talent and musicianship undeniably immense. Constantly changing and evolving his music collaborations with many great musicians Don Henley Jerry Garcia Bonnie Raitt Shawn Colvin to name a few he is without doubt up there with both Billy Joel and Elton John when it comes to piano playing singer songwriters truly a musical great. My only regret was I missed Bruce the next time he toured the UK but fortunately got to see him again in my new home in Charlotte NC in July 2018 thirty years later the love affair continues. If I was to ask you to check out one track try the Road not Taken from Scenes from the Southside album its stunningly beautiful. Be lucky my friend !!
